- Beekeeping can be challenging. Are your bees dying from starvation in the winter? Are you confused what and when to feed bees? Pollen? Fondant? Hi, I'm certified master beekeeper David Burns from Long Lane Honey Bee Farms and today, I'll give you some tips on how to change a candy board when it's cold outside. I've wondered how to change out a candy board during the winter. Thx for the video! There are so many comments on some forums stating never to break the seal between boxes during the winter.
You do have to keep something heavy on the top cover
David - When do you go check to see if they've eaten the candy off the first board?
Hi. I no longer feed the bees with dry sugar in the winter because it doesn't always help. Often, bees throw away all the sugar crystals. I make honey sugar candy and put it on top of the bee frames in late fall. and then once a month I check it in any weather. If there is not enough candy left, I add another patty . This is how I prepare it ua-cam.com/video/r5ZS1Z-483k/v-deo.html
how do you keep from other bees robbing your hive if other bees can get into your hive from the top?
In the winter, bees are not foraging.
Daivid, why do you have to boil the bee candy? What temperature does it need to boil at and for how long? Thanks!
I boil it in order to make it return to a solid mixture, so depending on your altitude, humidity, water to sugar ration, the temp needs to be somewhere between 243-253 (f) of course you do not want to burn or caramelize the candy as this is hard on bees.
How long does the candy boards last on a 8 frame board? Is there a recipe for a homemade candy for the board?
Hi Debbie, the longevity of the WBK will vary depending on how much honey is on board and the size of the colony. Our WBK are shipped with a refill recipe.
@@beek thanks!
if I do not harvest a season of honey, do I still need to feed with all that candy?
I have had the same observation. A hive starved and died off with tons of honey untouched. I would then make the assumption that they were unwilling to leave the warm cluster for nearby food. The candy board would help provide easily reached food at the top of the hive cluster. I put some candy boards in a few weeks ago. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the video.
Make sure you pull down any videos with kids.... YT is disable content on entire channels with kids in just one vid.
Well you might be a master bee keeper but you threw out some of your bees on purpose... not cool
