I very fortunately got to see Iron Maiden in Pittsburgh for the 5th time in my life, this past Friday. But this time i got to take my two young kids and they had a blast! This is an awesome tour they are doing, recapturing that 1986 vibe. But i just wanted to say to you, Nico: you are THE definitive Maiden channel and besides the very band themselves, no one else but you does these songs justice. You are damn phenomenal!!!!
I used to do a ton of half marathons before my bad ankles started bitching needing braces. It was on my run list daily. Funny thing, the "the miles never seem to end, as if you're in a dream, not getting anywhere, it's all so futile" lyric always struck home near the end of the race. Any mile after 10. Especially mile 13 was tunnel vision and dream like. Maiden is just the quintessential everyman band.
Great Job! I am lonely but never tired of running the long distance from Portugal to Canada to watch all your videos! Greetings from your number one friend from Lisboa, PORTUGAL 🤘🇵🇹
Deja Vu would be absolutely amazing live! It's one of my fav Maiden songs, and it would work well as a sing-along type song with the chorus / refrain "feel like I've been here before!" at every one of their stops.
I actually liked the first, although all 3 were good. To me, the first just felt and sounded really full and I think it would sound great in an arena setting.
This, Sea of Madness, or my personal fav, Deja Vu! Anyone of those would make me happy. The sad part would be whichever one got played, I and many others would be lamenting them not playing the other two! 😂 Close between 2 or 3 for me. Both sound much beefier than 1.
I def want this played for the RFYL tour!! Quick story - I go to a new gastro dr and am doing the initial intake. I happen to be wearing a Trooper t-shirt. During the convo, he stops talking about medical talk, smiles and says, I love the shirt and goes on to talk about Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner being his favorite song, ( and is in my floating IM Top 10). I hope they put this on the set list 🤘
Cool video, love this song. I’d love your channel, I’d love to see a video of top Blaze songs you’d think would sound awesome with Bruce singing them. Thanks for posting.
Nice job! I like all of them. The 2nd harmony is the best for me. I've found out that the 2nd harmony reminds me of the harmonies from Piece of mind, while the 3rd harmony reminds me of the harmonies from Seventh son of the seventh son.
Great job with all 3 arrangements Nico. I think both the 2nd and 3rd arrangements are great. They have 3 guitarists so there are so many possibilities for them to deliver songs like this one live. It's one of my favorites and really wish it was on the setlist for this tour.
I think the original "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Outro riff" has more going in there than just harmonized thirds..on the second half of the Outro, if you listen very carefully and with good headphones, you can definitely hear some higher octaves also
Yes, in the second half of the second repeat, Adrian's part is played an octave higher and then it ends with something like the lower part of my third arrangement (also an octave higher) but it sounds more like a guitar synth overdub. O don't think that would sound great live played by a third guitar.
@@LicksOfTheBeast it actually is it's own harmony, it starts on a B though it has notes in common with one of the others. And it isn't a guitar synth overdub, it's a regular guitar. That said, it wouldn't solve the problem of it possibly sounding thin live as it is a higher harmony
Ha! "Infinite Dreams", thanks! I liked 2 but thought it sounded like something already. Missed the entire The Future Past tour since they didn't come anywhere close during at time I could go. Tonight's show in Charlotte is the closest, but unable to make that one. Ah well. There's always video.
Maiden would definitely pick #2 and I'd have to agree. The solo was the original factor in me loving the song but there's definitely more going on there
Greatr work!! Arrangement 1 would make for a great studio recording with the 3 amigos, while arrangement 2 sounds exactly as what you'd expect in a live Maiden show. Arrangement 3 is my least favourite, there is one note at the end that sounds out of place.
I can't stop thinking what the setlit will look like. It would be actually amazing if they played it because it hasn't been played live for many years. Great video as always and I think 2nd would sound the best on big arenas
dejavu has nicko's best playing on tape. his right foot and double stroke fills are absolutely insane. definitely his high water mark with maiden. i will die on this hill.
They played "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" in the Belgrade show (I think opening night) of Somewhere on Tour. If you search for it, you can easily find it on here.
I'm more partial to the 3rd. While I do like the 1st with the power chords filling the back end, Harris' bass in the mix keeps the rhythm grounded without it sounding tiny.
I'm not so technical as most of the people commenting here, however my feeling is that #2 really sounds like live Maiden, however #3 sounds more similar to the original AND closer to Live After Death arrangements to my hear. Not sure if this makes any actual musical sense lol
This is what the 3rd guitarist should be about. I noticed it as a kid when I first got Live After Death and the harmonies really get lifted by angelic power chords along with the bass line. Simple, obvious, beautiful.
Ι was waiting for Sea of Madness and Loneliness of the long distance runner in this tour like you cannot believe !!! But.... nope. Now for their next tour, I am hoping for them to keep Alexander the great in the rotation .
I really like the third one! It’s a little darker, which I think suits the tone of the song. Individually though, the lines come out sounding like a sea shanty! I love this song and it’s one I really wish they’d included in the FP set
#2 rules! Watching this video makes me realize how much I absolutely miss this stuff In their newer music!! I love the progressive structures of the last few albums...but c'mon i though when adrian came back we were gonna get hammered with harmonies like these old ones, cause now there's 3!!! But no, not so much.😢 I really really hope Maiden has at least one more album left in them ( Niko) so lets hope for the modern progressiveness tied with old school harmonies for the BEST of what we all love from these legends. 🤘 Thank you for your videos, you kill it on guitar.
Hi Nico, some fantastic content on your channel! I’m somewhat an experienced guitarist (35 years playing) but my take on this is the 1st arrangement works best with the 3rd guitar playing the rhythm parts. However, you didn’t feature the additional higher harmony line which comes in second time around on the original recording! I think that the 3rd guitar should switch at that point from the rhythm parts to playing that additional harmony line. I believe that this is probably how the current Helloween lineup would handle this scenario live, for instance. What say you?
Yes, this might be the best approach. But realistically it would be more like the third of Nicko's arrangements. Adrian tends to go for more different arrangements of the old classics, than plain reproductions and let Geres play his original lines.
I'm gonna copy/paste what I answered to someone else just for efficiency 😊 There is a high harmony on the second half of the second repeat. It's basically Adrian's part an octave higher and then something like the low harmony of my third arrangement, but still an octave higher. It sounds more like a guitar synth, but either way I don't think these kinds of embellishments in the upper register work particularly well live. Helloween also seem to avoid some of the very high notes in their harmonies for live arrangements.
I think the 2nd one, reminds me what they did with Seventh son live, sooo good, but I dont think they will play it, I would be surpriced in a very good way, but if they didnt play Infinit Dreams, well, who knows, Bruce's vocals are very good these days
I see that great EVH picture in the back and I'm wondering if you could do some content about Van Halen one of these days. I love all the Maiden content, for sure, but a deep dive into some VH songs/guitar parts would be interesting!
I usually agree with you on 99% of your videos (which is something I really like, to have found someone else that shares my thoughts), and this one is no exception. The only time they played this song live was a little bit 'meh', and it sounded a bit 'hollow' and empty in the final part. I guess that's why they decided not to play it anymore. Anyway, I'd go with the 2nd one as well, as it fills up the 'emptiness' we mentioned before, it's a bit refreshing but doesn't change much of the original idea. It's always a pleasure to see your videos Nico, always impeccable. P.S. I always thought on the 2nd run of the harmonies they added a 3rd guitar? Or am I mistaken and it's the synth that does the trick?
Yeah, there is a high harmony on the second half of the second repeat. It's basically Adrian's part an octave higher and then something like the low harmony of my third arrangement, but still an octave higher. It sounds more like a guitar synth, but either way these kinds of embellishments in the upper register don't really work well live.
I'll definitely go for the 2nd! I remember they had a similar issue with the intro of Wasting Love during the FOTD tour... the result was so awful... I've always skipped that track on Real Live One.
trust me. Any song from SIT they intend to play, they are playing it now. I am sad they left out Sea of Madness and this song and even Deja Vu which I think would rock live. It is a nice thought and I'd adore them for doing it but I have my high doubts lol
Isn’t there a third layered guitar the second time the harmony is played? Basically playing the second half of Dave’s line. Having said that, the first arrangement hits hard and heavy 🤘🏽
What do you think about playing recent Maiden songs but with the sound of older albums ? It's not about saying past is better, but I'd love to hear that kind of emulation. Like Days Of Future past with the SIT sound would be amazing
To my ear, in Version 2 the chords are mudding the mix a little bit, so the Version 3 might work better live. Though V2 comes more naturally at first as it is closer to the original. In a afterthought. Through my experience, playing inverted power chords (5th-root) on the D and G strings instead of root-5th in the same positions, may still add a bit of fat, while occupying less space in the mix. (I'd also try playing them upstroke or fingerpick, to see what's better in this particular case).
Question : Do you think Maiden will EVER play "Empire Of The Clouds" live or is it another nope? I guess I'll never ever see them play Rime live either huh? And have they ever played "The Parchment" on tour? I love those two "new" Maiden epics. I'm seeing them this Saturday in Fort Worth! Up the Irons Y'all! 🤘
Empire of the Clouds: Most likely not. Bruce wants to get someone to play the piano parts, Steve wants him to do it, he said he's too nervous to play piano on stage. Or just that he does not want to. Rime: maybe?? leaning heavily towards no. This upcoming tour would be probably the last opportunity but I think 'Powerslave' is a much more likely option for 25-26, Small chance but I think they are going to go with a 16 or so song set (two songs for most albums except probably SiT since they just did a tour around it and Prayer is very unpopular). Rime might bring them down to 14 or 15 at best. Or unless its the only song from Powerslave played but I think they have to play more than 1 surely. Parchment: No. Most likely never will.
Bruce had said he wants to do mariner again so I think they will play it next year. For record, he had previously also talked about Stranger in a strange land, which of course they played for the first time in 24 years on the future past tour!
Honestly, I highly, highly doubt it. Empire of the clouds is really an album song, and there wouldn't really be any point in including it in a set 10 years after Book Of Souls. Rime I think is very likely - stay tuned for Saturday's video for more of my thoughts 😊
Somewhere In Time and 7th Son are amazing albums! The synths make this era so unique!
I sat in the 10th row for the 1987 Somewhere in Time tour. One of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Before you gave your favorite choice my feeling was also 2. Great reminder of other Maiden songs. Fun and very informative video!
My Maiden tribute started doing this one and it's a blast. The title is from the old movie so they can't claim it as their own :)
Arrangement 1 I liked best - to me, it sounds like everything is in its right place
arrangement #1 for me :) good job like usual
I very fortunately got to see Iron Maiden in Pittsburgh for the 5th time in my life, this past Friday. But this time i got to take my two young kids and they had a blast! This is an awesome tour they are doing, recapturing that 1986 vibe.

As an almost daily 8 mile runner, The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner is definitely one of Maiden's best for me. 😅
Right there with you! Though for me it’s more like 4 miles every few days… 😂
I used to do a ton of half marathons before my bad ankles started bitching needing braces.
It was on my run list daily.

Great song (and book!). That said, for me, I've always wanted to hear Deja Vu live
Deja Vu would be absolutely amazing live! It's one of my fav Maiden songs, and it would work well as a sing-along type song with the chorus / refrain "feel like I've been here before!" at every one of their stops.
A fantastic song on a fantastic album - my #1 Iron Maiden album, closely followed by Powerslave.
I actually liked the first, although all 3 were good. To me, the first just felt and sounded really full and I think it would sound great in an arena setting.
The second, for the same reasons you said. Filled up the space way nicer and with a bass so powerfull, doing power chords kinda defetats the purpouse.
Great played as always!! Thank you very much Nico, this song would be fantastic live.
P.S: Arrangement 3 is my favorite
Great work as always Nico, I like the 2nd
I wish they would play Sea of Madness, but would love to hear anything from SIT! My favorite album as well.
This! 💯
Yes!! Sea of Madness is a very monumental song!! It is a must for Maiden to play it!!
I'd kill to hear Deja Vu
totally right about Master of Puppets interlude. they should try it an octave lower
This, Sea of Madness, or my personal fav, Deja Vu!
Anyone of those would make me happy.
The sad part would be whichever one got played, I and many others would be lamenting them not playing the other two! 😂

Great vid, and yeah, I agree the infinite dreams quote is the best sounding
They played this song live just once in Belgrade 1986...
Arrangement number 3 for me.
Up the Irons 🤘
Number three takes the loneliness cake! Love that this track gets to shine a bit.
In order: 2nd, 3rd, 1st.
I still recall hearing this album the 1st time. The guitars sounded so unreal...
Nice job! I like all of them. The 2nd harmony is the best for me. I've found out that the 2nd harmony reminds me of the harmonies from Piece of mind, while the 3rd harmony reminds me of the harmonies from Seventh son of the seventh son.

This would be so killer! I hope we get at least one rare gem like this on the next tour. Thank you for these deep dives they are the best!
I knew you were going to say Loneliness. The best guitar song pretty much ever.
I'm an amateur marathon runner and this song really means something when i'm trainning long runs and at the Race, specialy close to the end.
I think the original "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Outro riff" has more going in there than just harmonized thirds..on the second half of the Outro, if you listen very carefully and with good headphones, you can definitely hear some higher octaves also
I beleive, those higher octaves come from synth chords.
smith did a LOT of layering and overdubbing on SIT after the band had wrapped up the recording process.
There is. There is a third guitar harmony already during the second half of it.
Yes, in the second half of the second repeat, Adrian's part is played an octave higher and then it ends with something like the lower part of my third arrangement (also an octave higher) but it sounds more like a guitar synth overdub. Maiden would definitely pick #2 and I'd have to agree.

Number 2, feels like it gives it more depth.
1:35 yes! That has always jarred, and i love the song.
Same here, it’s just never sounded right. So thin and weird.
1st version is best ,the rythvm guitar sounds so full and heavy
All 3 sound great but I prefer the original one. I thought the power chords added more punch.
Greatr work!! Arrangement 1 would make for a great studio recording with the 3 amigos, while arrangement 2 sounds exactly as what you'd expect in a live Maiden show. Arrangement 3 is my least favourite, there is one note at the end that sounds out of place.

YES! also Deja Vu!!!!
Hell yes!

El segundo montaje suena muy bien…pero el tercero,no se como explicarlo, pero me parece genial y me llega más.Muy buen trabajo 👏👍🤘🤘
Arrangement 2 only just over 3 for me. Great work mate 🤘🤘
Definitely! And if you ask me, they should just play Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son albums and call it a day! Lol!

longd distance runner harmonies are on top but people forget about childhoods end harmony from fear of the dark
I forgot about that one! That’s actually a pretty cool harmony.
@Rock-n-Metal-Realm this and edge od darkness are best one for me

The third is actually a full harmony (full chords). It sounds more interesting but it’s quite subtle so it may get lost if the sound is not perfect
Great job Nico!!! Well done
1st Place - option 1
2nd Place - option 3
3rd Place - option 2
Number 2 for me by far.

I hate that I will miss this entire tour.
If Iron Maiden adds this to their setlist I will be buying a ticket to the upcoming tour.
Every time I consider a potential set list for the Run For Your Lives tour, I can't help but wonder how Nico will deal with each pick. 😒
I love All Three. There all awesome 👍😎👍🎉
Yes. It makes sense to have a simple rhythm part under the dual harmony. Parallel 5ths give bite without clashing with the melody-harmony above.
The 3th arrangement sounds super great. The second is good but Dave could do the variation only one or two times during the harmony .
I like that idea!
