    Encourage the person beside you at the start line or swim line - it may only involve a smile, a 'good luck' comment or a hand shake. I remember my first try-a-try and this made the world of difference for me...

There happened to be a Kayak near me and got to me quickly. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go out slow. If you are a good swimmer it will happen for you out on the course. Do not start out fast.

    I just completed my first tri. It rained at the start. I did not have a water proof gear bag. I would recommend that so that your gear stays dry during your swim. You can still lay out your gear and just put the bag over it.

    Visualise T1 and T2 in your head. Spend some time and go through the zones as if you were in race. Check where your bike is (or your bags), get a memory of some landmarks to help you locate your spot. Prepare in mind the order of operations (take gps watch off, get swimcap and gogles off, unzip, and so on). All those things will help you with the nerves and lower the risk of making silly mistakes during race. Works for me on every race

      This! And make it tactile as well! It helps a lot praticing and arranging your transition layout (on half a towel) at home. I've done this before my first triathlon and it helped me a lot going through the logistics of T1 and T2 => Where to put the stuff you leave behind and where/how to grab the stuff you need for your next stint. For instance, it made me stack the attributes in the right order so I didn't have to think and didn't have to search for stuff during the transitions.
      Also having this layout prepared makes it a lot easier to fit it into the (often cramped) space in the transition area. Extra space can be used by creating a bigger towel-area or put things within reach. Same thing goes for your nutrition schedule. Practice where you put your gels/drinks/bars (Putting them in your suit at T2) and practice grabbing them one by one.

    1. I like to use a list when I pack a day or two prior to the race. It helps me to not forget something. If I have left something off the list, you ave plenty of time to still pack it.
    2. I rehearse Transition-1 & Transition-2 tree times at home two or three times when it doesn't matter how many mistakes you make. If you don't rehearse at all, you will be surprised how many mistakes you can make when you're fatigued and loosing time.

    Hi! For first triathlon I'd say it's ok to ride a road bike, I used one until my first IM70.3 and it was gr8! I agree sometimes you feel awkward as most people have a high tech TT, but you will see yourself passing several of them in the race. Another tip is to not forget the sunscreens and a cap/visors/sunglasses, specially for 70.3 and full IM, they start earlier but you'll get several sun hours ☀️

    If you can’t practice an open water swim, practice swimming in the pool with foggy goggles. Open water is typically murky with limited visibility, it’s one of the biggest changes from a pool. In a pool, fog up your goggles, soap smeared on the inside works, so you mimic the limited visibility in open water and get a comfort feeling of swimming while only seeing a few feet around you.

    I though this was a great list.
    However the one thing I learned, and I recommend to new triathletes. I think a tri suit is a worthwhile investment even for your first race; they can be had on sale for $50-60. It increases your level of comfort and makes you surprisingly competitive through transition. All other gear can wait in my opinion.

    Not a mistake from my first Tri, but I did once turn up at a Sprint Tri with a pool swim, when it was so cold setting up the transition my nose was running. So I went around with a pocket packet of tissues in my rear pockets of my Trisuit. I then forgot about them... Until that is half way through the bike when I reached around for a gel in my back pockets and found myself holding a very soggy pack of tissues instead !

    During my first sprint plus triathlon, (750m swim, 25k bike, 7k run), I placed my timing strap OVER the leg of my wetsuit. Big mistake. During T1 I quickly peeled off my wetsuit only to find that it wouldn't come off my left leg LOL. Had to spend a few minutes, yes, minutes, unravelling my inverted, tangled wetsuit to remove the timing strap, take off the wetsuit, and put the strap back on. That first transition was 4 minutes 34 seconds.....Never Again!

    2nd Always have a bottle with water in your bike.. you never know what can happend in the aid stations, on my first triathlon i had gatorade in my aerodrink and was planning to mix it with water and use water after my first gel.. the volunteer droped the bottle before i could grave it and had to wait untill the next one.

  • @Torremonte
    @Torremonte 5 років тому

    Check if your aero handlebar is allowed (especially in short distance triathlon) and/or prepare for removing them. I was told that it wasn't allowed when passing my bike to transition zone (30 min before the start) without chance to remove them (due to auxiliary brakes installed on them with inner cables and housing). Thankfully, I borrowed one friend's MTB, which clearly showed me that: a)Any bike can save your day and still allow you to enjoy your day; b)Not all triathlons are explicit in advertising about regulation but will take it seriously; c)Bikes with thick tyres, low presión and back suspension are physiologically challenging.
    Also keep hydrated well before the start: waiting in the swimming area, especially when in contact with water mislead your hydration status, so you'd drown yourself while pedalling.

      No rules, it's up to you! You could do the full race in a trisuit, or you might want to get changed before heading onto the bike / run.This does vary race to race as some organisers might not let you change in the transition area, in that case you could put your clothes on over the top of you swimming gear for example. You definitely don't need a trisuit, but it is possible to (comfortably) wear a swim jammer under cycling shorts to use in the run later. Just train with it too.
    That being said, make sure your jammer can handle the movement from cycling/running - I wrecked mine after a 5150.
    Turns out, some jammers over stretch and start flaking from use outside the water..

    • @Quaygay
      @Quaygay 4 роки тому

      You could do 1 of two things:
      1) Put your shoes on before leaving your T1 changing zone and walking/running to the mount line with your bike shoes already on your your feet. Then mount your bike and enjoy your race!
      2) You can already have your shoes clipped onto your bike (same set up as a flying mount) but at the mount line you just gracefully step over and mount your bike like you normally would for a training ride. Then you just ride with your feet on top of your bike shoes, slipping your shoes on while riding (similar to how people put shoes on when doing a flying mount)
      **The old saying is “There’s multiple ways to skin a cat”, so just find something that works best for you and that you’ll be comfortable doing on race day!

      There are event bathrooms on the way or somewhere around the transition area to avoid public nudity.

    If they change to a non wetsuit swim can you still use a wetsuit or not?

      In almost/all cases you will get a DQ or dns or a dnf depending what race and age group. When it is a wetsuit swim you get the option but if you want to get a good time/ good placing wear a wetsuit for speed and so you don't freeze! I hope I help :)

      Dayane Estevam yes but you’ll look like a total mess the best thing to wear is a triathlon suit as you don’t have to change it at T2 and T3
