  • Today I look at two lightweight web browsers, Dillo and Midori. Both are available for most Linux distributions. To get the latest version of Midori on Ubuntu-based distros, open the terminal and add the following one line at a time:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:midori/ppa
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install midori

Dillo looks like it'd be great for older "retro" computers like 486s where you're not going to have the resources to render modern graphics anyway.

Midori is the absolute best lightweight internet browser.

antiX actually comes with dillo and iceweasel. antiX-15 will feature a youtube viewer that sort of works with dillo. you highlight a http address (in any document actually) and click an icon. the video will play in mpv outside the browser.

runwiththedolphin I plan to do a review of AntiX-15 once it hits final. I've played around with it in the past and liked how fast and lightweight it is.

Great Video. Learned something today. Your right that firefox that takes up some memory. But in my experience on Linux Mint 17.2 xfce running 4 gigs of ram, it isn't how much ram it's taking up but how hard it works the processor. (Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4600 @ 2.40GHz) I especially notice it on youtube. Even worse when I'm logged in.

+gregorylock I share your point of view. I've got a ten year old laptop with 1Gb of ram et P4 pentium processor running Lubuntu. Ram is not a problem but my Cpu reaches sometimes 100% even with Midori. I don't know why people are so focused on ram when not so old pc bottleneck concerns more cpu requirements.

Maybe the windows version of Midori is just bloated or was a particular bad version I tried awhile back, but it used the same amount of ram if not more than chrome did with all the extensions I have for it on windows 7 when I tried it. Nice video though, I have an old laptop I've been thinking about putting Linux on for awhile and Dillo would make a nice web surfing browser that's light on the usage

It would be cool if you re-did this video for 2019. On my lubuntu junktop loading Firefox feels like I am on a C64 and loading a game from tape....

What browsers do you for privacy and protection? Your top 3 browsers? Please! For video's That will not crash?
And what is your opinion antiX-15 for Windows 10?

      @AJReissig  8 років тому

+Michael Moose For the most private and secure, use the tor browser, which is based on Firefox. My #1 browser pick is Chrome/Chromium, #2 is Firefox, #3 is a tie between Opera and Quipzilla.

Appreciate the reply! You know Opera has been purchase by Qihoo. So there go the privacy!!! Again, Kind regards,

Nice Review. Would've been nice to have included 'Slimboat'. Webkit based. Very light & fast on Linux & Windows. Will use Firefox flash plugin if installed & can import Firefox bookmarks.
    www.flashpeak.com/
    wget slimboat.com/release/slimboat_i386.deb
    wget slimboat.com/release/slimboat_amd64.deb
    It's also in the AUR.
