- A tribute to Hideto Matsumoto aka Hide(December 13 1964 - May 2 1998) one of the greatest japanese guitarists who died much too young.He was primarily known for his work as lead guitarist of the popular heavy metal band X Japan from 1987 to 1997.He was also a successful solo artist and co-founder of the United States based band Zilch.

I too just learnt about Hideto Matsumoto aka Hide, only because I wanted to know who were the top Japanese Metal Bands of the 80's. Of course Loudness was #1 but X Japan was #2 so it intrigued me to hear their music and videos and there was Hide on that lead guitar just shredding it! He was a fantastic and talented guitarist and songwriter. I read about his early and was surprised that his first American band exposure was KISS when he heard the KISS Alive II album. Supposedly, he was very influenced by Ace Frehley of KISS and Ace became his idol. Just so cool because I'm the same age that he would have been now and I too got into rock through KISS but my first album was Destroyer by KISS, Ace became one of my fav guitar players. If you listen to Hide's riffs there are some he used from Ace and Hide has a song called Rocket Vibe which mimics the name of Ace's song Rocket Ride. Wish he would have been alive now, I would have loved to meet him since I play guitar too. R.I.P. Hideto, hope someday I meet you in another life! Thanks for all your great songs!

I only learned about Hide today, and this is his first song i have heard and wow can i say he had a fantastic voice, he really did so much in his short life :( what happened is so sad but he'll be remembered for years and years, even in death he will always be here, oh and i need to say he looked so cool with the pink hair/make-up, i was so suprised to hear he did cosmotology but it's so cool that he did what he wanted to do, i'm off to go listen to more of his music, RIP hide, you made one new fan today

he had been out drinking with friends and came home in the wee hours of the a.m. He was found by his girlfriend (?) later that morning hanging from a towel attached to his bathroom door. This was a method guitarists used to ease the strain on their necks and backs and shoulders from guitar and straps. Apparently he was unconscious when he was discovered and then died in the ambulance in route to hospital. It was ruled a suicide, but no note was found.
