  • A week before the end of the semester, our teacher gave us an assignment. The guidelines were literally "do whatever you want." So we made this in the span of about two days. I was up editing this at one in the morning to get it done on time. I don't know why I do this to myself. Anyway, hope you enjoy! :D
    Big up my mates Jussi and Emil for helping me with this video.

      Thank you! I did most of the camerawork and I do appreciate it. It's not my best work but I'm getting there.

    i was bored most of the time tbh - editing needing much tighter work

    • @ironicallyscreaming
      @ironicallyscreaming  5 років тому

      can you elaborate on what you mean by tighter?

    • @Time_Line_Archive_Project
      @Time_Line_Archive_Project 5 років тому +1

      @@ironicallyscreaming Each 'scene' should be cut shorter and last about 2 - 5 seconds, 5 seconds max to help keep the viewers attention. A lot of scenes could have been cut down, therefore creating a 'tighter' sequence / narrative. Scenes that needlessly drag on too long can lead to the viewer becoming 'bored' (as I was)
      Watch commercials on TV - their fundamental 'goal' is to keep the viewer entertained within 2 or 3 minutes and they do this by keeping a very 'tight' sequence in their films... bored viewers means the commercial is a failure. There aren't many examples of 'failed' commercials on TV because they cost so much for the company, so it's in their absolute interest to keep the viewer glued to the screen throughout. Watch closely and time each scene and count how many sequence each scene actually lasts - you'll find it rarely goes past the 7 second mark
      Avoid 'dead space' - meaning areas in scenes where 'nothing is happening' or something appears blank - this ideology I believe originates in still photography but can certainly be applied to film - a quick google will show you what I mean.
      Don't worry though, all of this comes with time and experience
      (I hold a 1st class honours degree in Fine Art Photography but also have experience with video editing and small film productions)

      @@ironicallyscreaming Some random critique:
      The title 'School is Bollocks' is great - ...yet the first shot is unclear, what are we looking at? A bus stop? I'd kind of expect to see something at least representative of a school.
      The second scene lasts over 20 seconds and doesn't 'grab' the viewers attention - 20 seconds of nothing happening other than you walking to a train platform looking left and right - this entire scene could've been cut down - quick shot of you walking along path, down the stairs, looking left and right on the platform - that's enough for the viewer to get the message - in the same way you did with the bag and laptop scene at 02:20
      After exiting the train, you realise you're late... why are you running to school if you call it bollocks? People who think school is bollocks either don't attend or purposefully arrive late... didn't understand that.
      The transition from colour to black and white seemed rather lost - why? What does black and white signify that colour doesn't?

    • @ironicallyscreaming
      @ironicallyscreaming  5 років тому +1

      Responding to both comments here
      Aye fair, shorter time between cuts could keep the viewers attention better but I'd be sacrificing storytelling. There's only so much you can fit into a montage. The dragging on bit though, that's something I need to do better and I will focus on when I have time for it in a project.
      I'm not trying to make an advert though, I fail to understand why I'd edit a short film like an ad.
      Dead space is indeed something I need to work on.
      ...yes, a bus stop. I'm not at school yet, that's what the first scene is setting up.
      Quick shots don't always work. Sure, you get the needed information, but in this case it would be unnecessary and wouldn't adhere to the tone of the first scene. It's supposed to be slow, as if you were walking to school tired on a monday morning. Quick cuts would entirely betray that tone.
      Because even those who think school is bollocks understand that being late is bad. This is probs just down to cultural differences though.
      The transition to black and white signifies the narrators black and white mindset of "school is bollocks because I don't have time to drink and party." The move to and from black and white signifies a move to and from the narrators perspective.
