i'm 63 and been doing this since i was 15 and sometimes you floor fire an engine before you put them. i have found problems that would have made me take it back out to fix. but you need to listen to what the builder has to say.
I suppose it's all down to WHAT engines they've replaced in the past. As Marte Houdesheldt said, older carb engines were easy enough to fire up on an engine stand, and it was often preferable to do this, as it made finding out if you've got a dribbling core plug, or a weeping gasket is a lot easier. It was also reassuring to know the replacement was running OK if the original unit was still in the car running well enough that the vehicle was still usable (nothing worse than dropping in a scrapyard engine and finding it's worse than the one you took out). Because of this, if you learnt to do engine swaps on your drive back in the day, it's not horrendously uncommon to have fresh oil in before the engine is fitted. Modern engines need a couple dozen sensors wired in before they'll start, so bench testing them first is pretty much impossible. If this is where you experienced doing your first swaps, then chances are you'll naturally leave the oil until you also do the coolant, as the final step before the first start.
@@Reman1975 it's a difficult call, old stuff, test-fire out of chassis. anything modern helps to pull sparkplugs, even the head, oil pan on the pik n' pull engines, no telling what it is short of taking covers off. I used to be owner operator of an automatic transmission repair shop. I was always very uncomfortable with customer bench jobs ( they did their own R&R). Improper install and cooler flushing can ruin a perfectly executed rebuild. Here in the states, or at least in Michigan, someone bringing a lawsuit against you without proper credentials, ie no mechanics license or being a registered repair shop will lose their lawsuit. The worst thing about this obvious moron is the damage in badmouthing he is capable of.
You’ve done all you could and more! There is absolutely NO winning with this guy. I’ve had similar types of people in my time. And as the saying goes: ‘You can’t fix stupid’!!! Try not to lose sleep over this guy. Keep up the great work. Cheers!
During my time in the pump business you will always find an "expert" who knows a lot more about the subject even though they haven't even grasped the basics !
I am not a professional engine builder or anything, but I have build a few tractor engines and one time I had to deal with an idiot. It was a BMC 5.1L OEB engine which doesn't have a rear main seal at all. Instead it has this threaded portion that sort of rotates inwards which causes it to pump oil backwards. Of course these sort of engines have a housing that sticks against that threaded portion, if it wares out and oil will come out eventually. So I had done a complete rebuild of this engine and I said during the rebuild that if the rear was leaking before it will leak now unless we grind the crank (we did the whole crank, not the threaded portion) and also weld more material to the housing and turn it back down. Also there was a possibility to find a new housing, but that's not gonna help of the crank had worn down. I stated that the crank is the first thing to go to the engine and once it's built you can't fix the rear sealing issues unless you blow up the engine to get the crank out. Well according to him there never was an oil leak issues so we didn't do anything to it. Guess what it leaked after the rebuild and he demanded me to fix it. Of course I couldn't do anything at this point, but to suggest taking the housing off and measure if there was any chance a new housing could fix the issue. Well lucky for him the new housing did "mitigate" the issue, but of course there was slight oil leak still present. I am not too sure if these types of seals ever seal perfectly, but they are not anything like a real lip seal. Anyway he said it was on me to pay up the housing which I didn't and I was like I am gonna return the new housing as I am not gonna pay for other people's ignorance. Well never had to deal with that guy before, yet his engine seem to run fine irrigating fields. SO. I learned that you newer ask these things, you just do them so it will never been an issue.
The way I see it, you've done everything you need to have done.. like completely textbook! He therefore has no leg to stand on, just a chancer! Good man, keep the videos coming 👌
As a 60yr old performance engine builder here in Oz i can see why there are idiots all over the world . If u look at it, if oil is and will come out of the bolt holes how overfull is the engine !! to start with He hasn't a claim with u
I once R&R'd an engine that my boss rebuilt for a customer. As the parts cost mounted, the customer kept complaining. He finally said "whatever hasn't already been replaced, don't spend any more on new parts." The engine lasted 10 miles because a coolant hose blew after he picked up the car and number three rod made a bay window in the block. He took the shop to court, and I had to appear because I was the one who did the install. The judge asked me if I had checked all the fluids and proper indication on the gauges, etc. I told the judge he refused to buy new hoses, etcetera, and had the customer watched the gauges (i.e. the FLASHING RED LIGHT SAYING YOU HAVE NO COOLANT), he could have easily saved the engine. The judge then asked the customer "did you watch the gauges while you were driving?" To which, the customer replied "it was a new engine, I shouldnt HAVE to watch the gauges".... Next thing out of the judge's mouth was "case dismissed".
Mate..I'm a sparky, I get this in my job all the time,"people know better" You have the certificates and the evidence your a professional See him in court !!
All you can say he’s a real tool and should have left it to the experts and probably the engine you have built for him is probably better than when it was new 👊👊👍
Just found your channel and have already become a fan, I’ve watched a few of the warranty videos and this one takes the biscuit, not only have you taken it a back and rebuilt it because it was not shiney enough for him, which cost you money but he will not listen to advice. He says he has been working on engines for a long time, obviously has not learnt anything in that time, neither has his mate. Your partner was right to be suspicious, as soon as he said I can get these cheaper else where was where it started to go pear shaped, that’s when he should have been shown the door, what is worse is he is a friend of a friend. Can’t wait to see the outcome
You can’t fix STUPID me old son. Billy Connolly said it best ”never take an idiot with you, you’ll find one when you get there”. Don’t let the bast@*ds grind you down.
I'm a mobile mechanic and always get people trying to tell me what the problem is or how to do it. You then get the classic "my mechanic mate" speel. I recall quoting a clutch on a Peugeot 307 a few years back. The lady had already got a quote from a local garage for £700. I quoted £500. She then turned round and said my mechanic mate can do it for £50 but he needs a ramp 😂. He can't be very good then. There's always that pesky mechanic mate ready to help and to mess things up. This customer is an idiot though. He would be laughed out of any court with his claim.
You really need too ask your good customer who recommended your services in the first place, to give their friend a right talking too and to stop being a tool. He seriously needs listen to what the expert is telling him. I think you should have refused the job until you had evidence or had physically in the shop the brand new injectors. I can see where that's going to go.
My all time favourite customer quote is " Don't tell me that I am building it wrong ,I have built it 6 times already and I know this engine inside out " . All I managed to reply was that we generally build them once ,rarely twice but never 6 times before walking away.
It’s not your fault but is a poor design to be honest. I’ve never seen flywheel bolts that go straight through into the sump. A bad design but you’re 100% innocent here. 👍🏻
You cannot deal with Stupid!!! I would let him take you all the way to court and when he has lost his case he has to pay all your costs as well as his own. Also if he goes down the litigious route you can inform him you can have no further conversation until you go to court. You are obviously innocent and have gone above and beyond so tell him so. Best wishes and good luck
Yep, I have been in that position, not with engines but with something else. Some people you just can't tell them, when confronted with their own stupidity they will just double down. I suspect that in most of those types of cases like you sort of mentioned, it's somebody looking for another way out other than at their own expense.
These idiots walk among us , and whats even more alarming is if he is ex on the tools/mechaicic etc and hasnt witnessed this design of open bolt threaded holes , you kept your cool even though its a struggle @ times been in similar situations, been on the tools over 35 years and met these kind of know all idiots and its infuriating when you know your stuff and they try to take you down to their level of stupidity and ingorance logic
I recommend you not apologize to stupid people. You are not helping them. Tell him to consult a factory service manual and not to call you until he has. Carry out engines and transmission are getting rare because of issues like this. Many builders don’t offer warranty’s unless a proper shop install it.
I feel your pain. As soon as someone comes in and says ‘I am a retired’…….. engineer/mechanic/engine builder/mouse trap technician, etc. I absolutely know my day is about to turn to poo! At that point the quote I give automatically gets a 100% dickhead tax added to it and we are so busy we can’t get to the job for 3 months! I just don’t need the grief. No amount of money is worth taking it on, as I can complete 3 other jobs and make good money in the time I spend dealing with a customer like that. ‘Once bitten twice shy’ I think is the saying!
I work in the automotive sphere, Ive had people claim that their brakes went out after an oil change and that their 12 year old Nissan blew a radiator because someone topped up the reservior at my shop, these people are dumb and or scammers. I love the time a guy claimed we double filled his engine with oil leading to it getting blown, he changed his story when we told him we have cameras everywhere and that if we did screw up we will fix it, he sure changed his story quick LOL
Funny how the old folk say we aren’t listening to them when they are to stubborn to look at something from someone else point of view. Me all miss things but he had an opportunity not to embarrass himself and his so called mechanic
You, my good sir, truly have the patience of a saint. Let him embarrass himself in a courtroom. Charge him for your time, your solicitor and for attempting to educate him.
I sold a Yamaha R6 to a guy. He drove it home and called me the next day saying it runs poorly. Me: Did you do anything to it? Him: Yes, I changed the oil. Me: Did you fill it with oil? Him: Of course! right to the top! Me: 🤦♂️
Don't know on the outcome you have got yet but would suggest you use an ADR : Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a means of settling disputes without resorting to the courts. Settlement of disputes is typically faster and cheaper for both the consumer and trader when using ADR.
im a mechanic in new Zealand .in my experience people will always try to swindle you.you have to write a novel to do a warranty for what it covers now as soon as it's in their hands you don't know what they are doing to it when fitting it .I'm on your side if this guy wants to spend money on lawyers let him he's got no leg to stand on here !I see the quality you guys do .top notch .one thing I can't understand tho is if the rear seal is good how can oil get past it and drain out of the flywheel hole ??I've not seen this design before it's not a good one lol
We have a local mechanic who has similar customers occasionally. He now has a sign up that reads something like this... £40 / hour flat rate £50 / hour if you know what's wrong £60 / hour if you want to watch £70 / hour if you've had a go already £80 / hour if your mate had a go £100/hour if you give advice £120 /hour if you offer to help Legal advisors don't usually have much oil on their fingernails but there are exceptions.
You've offered great advice and tried to work with the customer. Experienced things like this before and yes, generally they are just looking for a way of getting money off. Can't please everyone I suppose.
Yet more evidence that you should simply stop doing van diesel engines of any type. By the time the engines need work the vans are on their 3rd or 4th owners.
Send the guy an email of the words (IM STUPID) as big as you can make them! Tell him to print out this email and hold this paper up in front of himself and the engine and have a friend take a picture to send you to start the warranty process! I'm sure we can start a go fund me to cover any cost just to have a little fun with your new number one fan😂😂😂😇😇😇
I hear what you are saying and agree - but to balance the books here is my true story. They are out of business now but "Gem Reconditioned Engines" were the main competitor for "Repco Reconditioned Engines" in New South Wales, Australia in the late 1980's. Many said that by the late 1980's Repco owned Gem and simply continued to use the "brand" for a while as their own competition in the market place. At the time I lived in Country NSW and only had access to one vehicle so the quicker it was sorted the less time I would be walking etc. There was no local public transport available and I was working 6 weeks of Night Shift - so not many takers to drive you to work at 11pm. That is why I elected to take an "exchange motor" rather than having my engine rebuilt from scratch. Basically you paid for it and it was on a truck from Sydney overnight and they dropped off a fully reconditioned engine (via a common carrier) and took yours in exchange (full motor). The Warranty requirements mandated a fully licenced mechanic to install and start the Engine. This was all done. I picked it up and was proud as punch with the throaty sound of the Big 243 V-8 in my Holden HZ 1 Ton Utility. Well she leaked oil from moment 1 - significantly from front and rear seals area. These were the days of land line phones (not mobiles or emails) so I had to wait to make a call at 8am in the morning (we knocked off at 7am) and the bullshit started with "It will probably take up and stop leaking" and "Let it go a few days". I (like most Country boys) was a "Bush Mechanic" and I knew it was all bullshit - but when you are 20 years of age, have no Bank Balance to speak of and are dealing with someone over the phone 160Kms away - you are vulnerable and powerless. Rightly or wrongly I used the only persuasion left to me. I went and had a chat with the Local distributor. Enough said. End of the Story was that eventually I got a replacement Engine and it worked fine. All they would say is that there were "Several major tolerance issues". I was still without a vehicle for about another 10 days because they insisted on receiving the engine back in Sydney and inspecting it before they would agree that it was a re-manufacturing issue - thus further days before it was sent/received. In the end they paid my mechanic to remove the faulty engine and reinstall the replacement reconditioned engine. I still wore the inconvenience of relying on "Shanks Pony" for those additional 10 days.
Probably the 'weekend warrior for 40 years' type. Most of them don't realise someone doing it for a living gets more experience in a year than they do in a whole lifetime of 'tinkering'
Hi mate , I'm from sunny Scotland , customers come and ask for a new Llamda sensor to be fitted for failing our mot test on emissions and I ask which 1 is faulty ???
I don't do machine work or build engines at my shop for anyone but certified repair facilities. And I stay covered up with business. You can't fix stupid, you can try to make it better but you only end up messing up a perfectly good 2 by 4 and they are still stupid.
Im a Pc technician, We have these in computers as well. The type people who would (and did) use their Cd / Dvd rom drive trays as a cupholder. My manager at my first IT gig when i was 19 told me, and i quote. "Oh, when our clients are That stupid, Bill them for an "ID-10-T" work order." I said "ID 10 T?" I wrote it down and got the joke. I Think it applies here in spades.
We had a engineering company and garages for over 70 years we get customers like this every few months. There a pain my advice is you document every call contact time. You commit to nothing you explain that you will examine and if nothing you done is at fault he will have to pay. If he has removed bolts that are lock tight sealed then he has broken warranty If he wants an independent report you have to both agree on a company and if it down to poor workmanship then you will cover the report cost if not its down to him. Get you solicitors to write a response if he get his legal involved but . I would now hang fire just get all your evidence together. No more contact let him think. Because it might be he need time for it to sink in Yes he might bench test to see if leaks before fitting. You made him look silly so he's going to have to save face.
Ive seen oil pouring out of a rear main seal, thats because a guy put 5 Gallons instead of 5 liters because the gun he was using was new and wasnt calibrated to Liters, the owner of my work paid for that mistake it was a real f up.
Only thing I can say is if this guy has moaned and gone against everything you advised why did you not tell him to do it himself? As a Painter decorator if I get someone like this I just walk and tell them DIY
That is someone who shouldn't be working on cars!! I remember at one of my former employers that we had a customer going off saying we didnt change the oil in his diesel toyota because the oil thats in it is black as the ace of spades, there are unfortunately some very special people out there in this world that at some point in our life's will have to deal with
It's people like him that is the reason I won't fit part provided by the customer. That flywheel you fitted 6 months ago is making a noise, ok get the supplier to pay me for the work and I will fit a replacement, what you want me to fit it for free because the ebay supplier has vanished oh Wells shit to be you
I know with anything aftermarket or vintage that you have to do rebuilds or repairs that you do not usually install. That is where it all goes bad most of the time. I now only do jobs that I do the install and run in for there to be a warranty. Since the new policy i get between 1-2 comebacks, usually do to a defective part, per year. My whole point is that most do not know everything necessary to install and run in most rebuilds or new builds and will deny all accountability if something they did screws up.
Most people use a Solicitor only a few times in their life, anyone who has one on speed dial is usually a property developer, a villain or a scammer....or a combination
Following on, ive been in quoting and sales for years in painting and decorating(a similar mix of essential and discressionary spending and similar amounts(classic engine 7k nzd , 3bdrm timber house 7-9k).. Ive got to say this world takes all comers. Perhaps liase with your solicitors and ensure you put clear steps in place and associated protections accuratly related to your trade. Good luck

If u look at it, if oil is and will come out of the bolt holes how overfull is the engine !! to start with He hasn't a claim with u
time to write some policies for them to sign for future builds
Sounds like he is trying to get some money back. He is clearly clueless if he filled up with oil before the engine is back in
I once R&R'd an engine that my boss rebuilt for a customer.
You're not missing anything. He is.
A BOLT!!!!!
Mate..I'm a sparky, I get this in my job all the time,"people know better"
You have the certificates and the evidence your a professional
See him in court !!
You get people like that in every business. We say 'The customer always THINKS they are right'
How the hell did you keep a straight face putting that pencil through that flywheel mounting hole!
Baaah Hahahah. Tears rolling down my face.
Mucken Fuppet!
Unbelievable. You explain the whole sorry tale, very well!
All you can say he’s a real tool and should have left it to the experts and probably the engine you have built for him is probably better than when it was new 👊👊👍
Golden rule , don't throw your workmates under the bus
I think you could be right Michael
Bet hes bought some cheap n nasty injectors off ebay also
I'd second that to be fair 👍
My all time favourite customer quote is " Don't tell me that I am building it wrong ,I have built it 6 times already and I know this engine inside out " . All I managed to reply was that we generally build them once ,rarely twice but never 6 times before walking away.
It’s not your fault but is a poor design to be honest. I’ve never seen flywheel bolts that go straight through into the sump. A bad design but you’re 100% innocent here. 👍🏻
This is a great channel! God bless you keep up the good work! Subscribed
Tell him to jog on lol👍👍👍
Dealing with idiots you are too polite.
As my dad says....."A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!" Feeling the frustration that these idiots bring.
Funny how the old folk say we aren’t listening to them when they are to stubborn to look at something from someone else point of view. Me all miss things but he had an opportunity not to embarrass himself and his so called mechanic
Little knowledge is worse than no knowledge. The tinternet is full of it. lol
You, my good sir, truly have the patience of a saint. Let him embarrass himself in a courtroom. Charge him for your time, your solicitor and for attempting to educate him.
Thanks you David, much appreciated 👍
If his lawyer gets in touch, you'd better make a bolt for it.
🤣🤣🤣 when i came across this happening to me for first time I was changed a flywheel I just googled it and understood straight away 😅 🙃
I sold a Yamaha R6 to a guy. He drove it home and called me the next day saying it runs poorly.
Me: Did you do anything to it?
Him: Yes, I changed the oil.
Me: Did you fill it with oil?
Him: Of course! right to the top!
Me: 🤦♂️
Don't know on the outcome you have got yet but would suggest you use an ADR :
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a means of settling disputes without resorting to the courts.
You're in a strong position , he even sent you videos that back your case up.
Who puts the oil in the engine when it’s still on the stand? That’s a bell ringing right there.
I do like the videos about screamers , bet it was a sprinter
I feel for your situation. The public can be horrible sometimes
Document everything and he won't have a leg to stand on. You're right about everything
The joys of dealing with the general public 😂😂
We have a local mechanic who has similar customers occasionally. He now has a sign up that reads something like this...
£40 / hour flat rate
£50 / hour if you know what's wrong
£60 / hour if you want to watch
£70 / hour if you've had a go already
£80 / hour if your mate had a go
£100/hour if you give advice
£120 /hour if you offer to help
Legal advisors don't usually have much oil on their fingernails but there are exceptions.
I wish he was dealing with Hambini! He would look a little silly in court.
Just have a local solicitor on contract so they handle all of these complaints.
mechanic here, customers just do not listen to the advice, you try help them and it's never good enough.... 🤷♂️🤦♂️
You've offered great advice and tried to work with the customer.
Experienced things like this before and yes, generally they are just looking for a way of getting money off.
Can't please everyone I suppose.
And this is why I don't run my own business, Ppl are stupid and insist that you are wrong even when u prove it to them..... Smh
It’s hard Lee, glad u joined us 👍👊
wilful blindness is easier than admitting you're an idiot ~ embarrassment is a powerful force
Yet more evidence that you should simply stop doing van diesel engines of any type. By the time the engines need work the vans are on their 3rd or 4th owners.
He'd probably complain about balloons flying away when he blows them up and releases them without putting a knot in.
My mamma always said stupid is as stupid does - F.Gump.
The people you help the most appreciate it the least
Okay enough chit chat get cranking with the video already lol
Good video mate .looks like it took longer than the time you posted.hope yer tea is still warm 😂😂
There’s oil coming out of a hole in the engine.
My brain is hurting
Biggest problem running a business. Bloody customers.
We had a engineering company and garages for over 70 years we get customers like this every few months.
There a pain my advice is you document every call contact time. You commit to nothing you explain that you will examine and if nothing you done is at fault he will have to pay.
If he has removed bolts that are lock tight sealed then he has broken warranty
If he wants an independent report you have to both agree on a company and if it down to poor workmanship then you will cover the report cost if not its down to him.
Get you solicitors to write a response if he get his legal involved but .
I would now hang fire just get all your evidence together.
No more contact let him think.
Because it might be he need time for it to sink in
Yes he might bench test to see if leaks before fitting.
You made him look silly so he's going to have to save face.
You have the patient’s of a saint , even a novice like me can see the issues . Your friend has second sight All the best
Ive seen oil pouring out of a rear main seal, thats because a guy put 5 Gallons instead of 5 liters because the gun he was using was new and wasnt calibrated to Liters, the owner of my work paid for that mistake it was a real f up.
I don’t know how you could keep your cool in a situation like that!
Only thing I can say is if this guy has moaned and gone against everything you advised why did you not tell him to do it himself? As a Painter decorator if I get someone like this I just walk and tell them DIY
That is someone who shouldn't be working on cars!! I remember at one of my former employers that we had a customer going off saying we didnt change the oil in his diesel toyota because the oil thats in it is black as the ace of spades, there are unfortunately some very special people out there in this world that at some point in our life's will have to deal with
I dealt with a guy like this one time about 94 years ago
A confused customer , you are being very patient with him
Now you know why some animals eat their young . That guy is a perfect example . I know when to hand a job off to a more experienced person .
Good luck
