John Payne, formerly of Rough Road in Kingstanding, recalls signing up in 1939 and starting his millitary career manning a Lewis gun ontop of the Dunlop factory in Castle Vale, Birmingham.

My Grandad. Tom Haywood. He was an anti aircraft gunner on Dunlop in Birmingham, he spent his entire war there. He met my mama Connie there, they lived 56 years together ,bless them
