The 3 best things about hoddles management with england The 0 0 draw away to italy to qualify Owens wonder goal Ray parlour asking eileen drewery for a shortback n sides
Sour grapes because Hoddle didn't let him get away with whatever he wanted(also losing his place to Owen). Hoddle had England playing decent football and if anything I would of liked to seen him blood the new generation
I still can't believe Hoddle didn't take Gazza. A fat Gazza could have done more than David Batty and Rob Lee. Last week Fergie said in an interview with Gary Neville that Gazza was the one that got away from him - the best player he never signed. Losing to Romania in the group stages was pretty bad too. Venables was a victim of Martin Bashir too, the FA didn't want him anymore because he was seen as a bit dodgy. One of England's greatest tragedies that he didn't stay on...
Venebales didn't always toe the line, but in this country, as soon as something flag up, it's curtains for your job. We need to get over the fact, that nobody is squeeky clean. Unless there is some serious breach, or an accumulation of things, then let the person do their job.
Hoddle was RIGHT not to take Gazza IMHO (and I'm from North east England) I'm not knocking or disputing Gazza's ability but he was a daft bugger and the more he got away with the more he would carry on. He got away with his antics at Italia 90 because he was so young. He was lucky not to get badly hurt or even killed up in Glasgow when he was taunting the Celtic fans with flute playing gestures......
@@gazof-the-north1980 He got away with his antics in Italia 90 because he was the best player, jeeeez. He prepared the goals against Belgium and assisted the passes that gave the penalties against Cameroon. Not to mention in 96 whn he decided the game against Scottland and was the best player against the Dutch. He almost kicked out Germany in the semis. A world cup lasts 4 weeks and that's what counts , you need the best players you can get for 4 weeks not a year or two and Gazza was the best they had. Venables shoud have stayed the coach too. England beat themselves in 1998
@@martifrey3357 Gazza was *NOT* the best they had in 1998. He was past it by then. As for Venables, I agree he was a good manager but he had business interests outside of Football as well as a legal case going on at the time and these were distractions not favourable with the FA
Apart from a 40 minute spell against a troubled Dutch side who only won 1 of their 4 games at Euro '96, England were pretty awful under Venables before the heroic defeat against Germany. Don't get me started on Glenn Hoddle! The mythology surrounding Hoddle's management is baffling! For starters, he should never have got the England job in the first place. Chelsea finished no higher than 11th in his three seasons at the club and he had one of the worst win-rates in Chelsea's history. You may say he had a couple of good runs in The FA Cup but look at who Chelsea beat: 93/94 - Barnet in a replay, Sheff Wed in a replay, Oxford, Wolves and Luton. 95/96 - Newcastle on pens, QPR, Grimsby in a replay and Wimbledon in a replay. Chelsea lost to Millwall in Round 4 in between those two runs. As for his time with England, the fact that his biggest feat was getting just 1 point in two games against a good but by no means great Italy side says it all! England failed at France '98, thanks, in no small part, to having a hard last 16 game after somehow failing to win their group after Hoddle decided the already world-class Beckham and Owen weren't ready to start the crucial game against Romania. The Euro 2000 qualifiers followed and England picked up just 1 point from their first two games! People claim that England were going places at the time when Hoddle was sacked for non-footballing reasons but the truth is, the fans didn't like him(hence the loud boos after his last game at Wembley), a lot of players didn't like him and England had been getting worse and worse over the previous year or so. Hoddle was probably just one more poor result away from getting the sack for footballing reasons. After England, Hoddle went to Southampton, where he did no more than a decent job. He then had a nightmare spell at Spurs and then went to Wolves, where he was sacked after winning just 27 of 76 games despite the club being one of the favourites for promotion during his time there. Amazingly, despite everything that had gone before, despite all the evidence to show his management skills were almost as bad as his man-management skills and despite the fact he'd been out of work for about 10 years, quite a lot of people were calling for Hoddle to replace Hodgson in 2016! You may think he talks a good game, you may think he has interesting ideas about formations and tactics but the fact is, although he was a great player, Glenn Hoddle was not a good manager!
I loved Hoddle as a player but I agree with most of what you have said. As for Euro 96 they were poor/average except for Holland / Germany games maybe 2nd half Scotland. The same could be said for Gazza in 96 - had highlights obviously but he was a shadow of the 1990 player.
@@maxfrasier Gazza is a national treasure and he was a very good player when he was young and may have become a true great if it hadn't been for his off-field and injury problems but the perception that he was brilliant at Euro '96 just isn't the reality. I read a telling comment just after ITV showed full replays of our Euro '96 games a couple of years ago and I'm not sure if this person was seeing the games for the first time in 24 years or the first time ever. They said "All Gazza did at Euro '96 was score that great goal against Scotland and give the ball away all the time." That may have been a bit harsh because he scored a couple of good penalties and he obviously played a number of successful passes but I've got to say, when I re-watched the games, I thought Gazza was very poor most of the time.
@@Ernest_Thesiger Agree 100% I rewatched all the euro 96 games maybe 10 years ago and Gazza was generally average. He was on fire at Rangers at the time - at least that was the consensus - however in an inferior league where Rangers were dominant. There was an outcry when he missed WC 1998 but people forget the match before when he wore the head bandage he was terrible. He was never the same player after 1991. He was never world class after the age of 23 but people forget that.
I think Glen would have been the best technical coach but he needed someone either above him to relate to media and players or a good assistant coach to do that job. He was excellent at formations and tactics plus improving players technically too but he lacked a human side. He left players and the public cold.
If only England had been able to find a coach who had Hoddle's tactical nous, Keegan's enthusiasm and commitment to attacking football, and Eriksson's ability to spot talent, the Golden Generation might actually have won something.
Hoddle was to blame for Beckham's sending off he singled him out at half time and had a go at him and Beckham went into that second half frustrated that's the reason he gave Simeone a tap on the leg that's was probably bad management on Hoddles part in that moment in the world cup the other was leaving Gazza at home
I'll go with splitting the blame between the ref and Beckham. Becks shouldn't have flicked his leg - for some reason he seemed upset that Simeone patted his head - but for me it was a yellow any day of the week. if the ref had got it right (imo) none of this would be a conversation. I also think a wiser Victoria Beckham wouldn't have told David she was pregnant *the night before the game*.
To me 98 team was the best I've seen ..Hoddle was 100% right to drop Gazza ..Hoddle kept saying get yaself fit for 5months. People say I really Hope The England manager doesn't play the same old players just on their name..and when We had a strong minded manager he gets crucified, We've missed a trick with Hoddle
Dont really agree with that but we'll never know. Gazza was capable of producing moments of magic like his goal against Scotland in Euro 96. And he just turned 31 before the tournament so hardly over the hill.
Nope. Hoddle was useless. The man took a faith healer to the world cup. I don't care if Gazza had lit up a crack pipe on the pitch, we needed him there. Some players deserve a pass.
If Sheringham and guys didn't go out as drunken sailors there wouldnt be any photo to explain. Venable or older manager would listen to you because they know to deal with your bullsh1t.
Hoddle had no way of relating to players and his management style was disastrous. Was more interested in faith healers and the reason disabled people were as they were. 😐
Venables was one of the biggest coaching myths out there; and his squads resembled a closed shop. Sugar was right about him; as long as there are ex players like Sheringham; Gazza & Ruddick bigging him up; this myth will continue. Hoddle was always the superior coach; genuine world class players like Scholes; Shearer and Ferdinand acknowledge this & Anderton who played for both clubs; acknowledged this. Venables was hardly a glowing success at Spurs; and as a Gooner I never feared Spurs under his management
