    Golf Digest did an article on the 14 club limit. The short version is during the 1930s golf clubs went from hickory to steel, and it was not uncommon for golfers both Amat and professional to carry upwards of 30 clubs. So it was the caddies who pushed for the club limit rule, so they didn’t have to carry two bags. Now as to 14, no one is completely sure, but that was the standard set of clubs in the mid 1930s (4 woods, 9 irons, and a putter)

    I followed Tommy for 18 holes at 2015 British Masters at Woburn, just because he was a convenient tee time, if I'm honest. I've been a massive fan of him ever since... clearly a great talent, and coming back in to form at that time, but you could just tell he was a top fella. Cracked up the crowd a couple of times with his comments on Gary Stal's regular meltdowns. A major in 2024 would be very well deserved.

    • @itarry4
      @itarry4 4 місяці тому +1

      Which actually sounds like you've just found the reason, honestly it's a really decent shout at least for why the number of clubs is as it is at 14. I mean they don't really want to show caddies struggling to follow their player as he strolls around the course chatting with the other players etc and it's not like the equipment was anywhere near as light as it is today imagine having to carry 2 full bags full of that old stuff. Probably wouldn't be a great look even before TV I'd imagine the golf press etc would be all over it especially if one of the caddies actually collapsed or even if they just put the bag/bags down and refused to walk another step.

Have followed Tommy for many years and he is one of my favorite golfers in the world. So interesting to see how Tommy views each club and thoughts behind his setup. Was also cool to see that he didn't know what LS stood for and that the Mini driver cover could be turned inside out. You would assume that tour pros know every detail about the brands they play. What a cool video, it was awesome to watch. All the best for 2024 Seasom Tommy, will be backing you all the wat to win some majors! See you at the Nedbank Golf Challenge 2024. From Andy’s golf blog
    In 1922, steel-shafted golf clubs began to go on sale but weren’t proving to be particularly popular with professional golfers. Until this point, players used hickory clubs and were generally comfortable with them because they knew exactly where each shot with each club would land. The introduction of steel-shafted clubs brought with it the prospect of a longer and more consistent ball flight, however, players would have to invest a great deal of time and effort into getting used to them if they were to switch.
    In 1924, Herbert C Lagerblade became the first player ever to use steel-shafted golf clubs during a US Open. Shortly after, other players began to follow suit, however, with no upper club limit in place and to give them the best of both worlds, players often carried both a set of hickory and a set of steel clubs in their bag. On some occasions, caddies were even required to lug two golf bags to ensure they could carry all of the clubs the player needed. One field study at the US Open and Amateur discovered that the average number of clubs used by players was 18 - four more than the current limit.
    At the 1935 US Open, things began to come to a head when one player turned up with 32 clubs in their bag, including a full set of both left and right-handed clubs. It was after this event that the USGA began to take a serious look at limiting the number of clubs players could carry and use. They had three main aims in mind:
    Preserve the element of skill in the game of golf
    Ensure a level playing field in terms of access to golf equipment (wealthy players could often afford to buy more clubs than those less well off)
    Look after the welfare of the caddies who were regularly carrying bags weighing more than 15 kgs.

    Great piece TeamRS. Originally questioned 40 mins for a WITB piece. But definitely worth it. Helps with Tommy being so natural. Look forward to the next episode.

    Rick has had some outstanding golfers on this channel and most seem like nice lads but Tommy Fleetwood must be the most likeable character in the game today, if not ever.

    I love Tommy, such a down to earth and humble dude. The best golf swing on the PGA in my opinion. So effortless and fluid
