Super special thank you to all the Sinniks & the members and NEW Sinnik1.0 @Dick Rooduyn (you will get a digital "shout out" in the next upload as well as the other membership perks you get immediately)!
The Circus continues and Prince is ready to conclude the Lovesexy tour. The most ambitious tour of his career was not planned well logistically and lost money. Prince is poised to take out his frustrations on his band, his management team and anyone else who might tell him who he is supposed to be as an artist.
Maybe Prince is sabotaging himself, but as it stood, Prince was still being held up as the genius of the moment.
Warner Bros. needed a soundtrack for a movie that pit a mysterious eccentric with a cape against his charismatically devilish archenemy. Luckily for the studio, there was a musician who knew what it was like to be both: Prince.
“I said, ‘You, the Bat, Batman,’” recalls his creative partner Albert Magnoli, the director of Purple Rain. “And he went, ‘Cool.’” Prince’s former manager Bob Cavallo would take issue with how the news was delivered, but Prince signed on nonetheless.
In 1989, director Tim Burton’s stylish Batman reinvented superhero films. Every aspect of it-from Jack Nicholson playing the Joker opposite Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader, to the high-tech Batmobile, to Danny Elfman’s dramatic score-was a bat signal to Hollywood: The genre was about to become big business. “We went to make a kind of movie that up until that time really no one was making,” says Mark Canton, then a head of production at Warner Bros. “It really was the game changer.”
The involvement of Prince, who as a kid used to play the theme to the ’60s Batman television show on the piano, underscored that fact. But it wasn’t just a purple cherry on a blockbuster sundae. The album he made to accompany Batman helped turn a summer extravaganza into a slow-burning phenomenon. Though it bore little resemblance to a typical tentpole soundtrack, the record spent six weeks atop the Billboard chart. The lead single, “Batdance,” is a six-minute mashup of various song parts and lines of dialogue sampled from the movie. It was Prince’s first no. 1 single since 1986’s “Kiss.”
Back then, only Prince could get away with turning such a hyper-commercial assignment into something so avant-garde. But the icon didn’t go completely rogue: “There was so much pressure on Tim,” Prince told Rolling Stone in 1990, “that for the whole picture, I just said, ‘Yes, Mr. Burton, what would you like?’”
Prince may have been serving a popular franchise, but what he created was very much in his own image. “It was in his domain,” Magnoli says. “He wasn’t told, ‘There’s a scene and Michael Keaton is doing this or Jack Nicholson is doing that. I need a song.’ It wasn’t that. It was just, ‘Do what you want because you’re inspired by the movie.’ So he did what he wanted.” And while the album isn’t a classic by the artist’s high standards, there’s never been a soundtrack like it. The often-goofy, poppy, guitar-laced record is the perfect complement to a movie that, despite its noirish elements, is still about two profoundly ridiculous comic-book characters. This is the story of how Prince brought the funk to Batman
His style, in both the musical and aesthetic sense, is timeless and unique to his unwavering sense of the self and fluidity. Across all his masterpieces such as 1999 or Purple Rain, it is clear that Prince’s dynamic world was created by his imagination, which cherrypicked from across the spectrum of popular culture when cultivating this iconic oeuvre.
It transpires that his first foray into music was inspired by one of the most famous imaginary worlds in popular culture, that of the DC Comics hero Batman. This revelation makes a lot of sense, as none of us are likely to forget that Prince wrote the soundtrack album for Tim Burton’s 1989 adaptation. Prince was a big fan of the 1966 Batman TV series, the theme was the first melody the Minneapolis native ever played on the piano, his first dalliance with music.
When Warner Bros. needed a soundtrack for a movie that pit a mysterious eccentric with a cape against his charismatically devilish archenemy. Luckily for the studio, there was a musician who knew what it was like to be both: Prince.
“I said, ‘You, the Bat, Batman,’” recalls his creative partner Albert Magnoli, the director of Purple Rain. “And he went, ‘Cool.’”

Man, I actually have gotten to the point when I see a new post from this channel, I refuse to watch it
until I have absolute quiet time with no distractions. I'm currently hiding in an unreserved conference room at work to see your latest masterpiece and I'm not disappointed. You're animation skills have become NEXT LEVEL!!! The opening shot of Prince on a mountain with lightning bolts raining down?!?! DAAAAAAYUUUUHM!!!! That's got to be a POSTER my friend!
And some folks have beat me to the compliment but the slooooow crawl of UPTOWN revealing itself from behind the city skyline......
very inspired and just so cool!!! 👋👋👋👋🤓🤓🤓 The only downer for me as a rabid Prince fan is just the obvious, a sequel to Purple Rain was inevitable and it deserved to be in the capable hands of actual, professional screenwriters and film makers. Yes, he had great ideas and I'll even give Kim some props but lord, this movie could've extended his career a bit more instead being one of the nails in the coffin so to speak. Great video as always!! Can't wait for the next one!!!

Your unique fabulous Prince-umentaries are turning into works of art themselves!🤩 Before you even put 'UPTOWN' I was thinking of 'Uptown'! Prince not only created a kind of purple world, Prince created his own culture, a way of life, a way of self love, self esteem, walking even, a unique alternative to the norm, to what others think are cool, and yes, of viewing the world. Beautiful intro Sinnik22.
Alan Leeds... tsk, tsk, tsk.... no, no, no, Prince WAS happy with Lovesexy, he wasn't happy with Alan. And the other managers. Lovesexy could have been bigger, granted it was ethereal and extremely artistically unclear, but that's what ART IS.
Art of any kind is up for interpretation, careful study and analysis almost, like fruit, or something that you squeeze or work at it to ... GET IT. Lovesexy was kind of a spiritual challenge for the public. It wasn't bigger because there was no movie and the general public had associated Prince WITH A MOVIE. Thus, to get back to that success, the Batman '89 movie was an opportunity for the public to re-associate Prince WITH an exciting movie. Tick, tick, bang and it was a success! Danny wasn't aggravated, he was jealous. Period. Representative of the kind of oh, only THEY can do something great. Not a Prince. Examples of the adversity, which to some degree will be there in anything really, that Prince faced at the time.

You’re posts are well thought out , challenging, and thankfully complementary. I never considered the public association at the time with princes music and the release of a film. It does make sense because video was huge & prince didn’t spend a lot of time on individual narrative for his videos.

    • @randy5880
      @randy5880 Рік тому +3

Lovesexy had a lot going on. Compact disc was a new tech, but Prince insisted on 1 track. The fight for When Doves Cry good call. 1 track… maybe not. The confidence was real but some decisions were not the best. I love the album. I had cassette and it was one of my first CDs. Tour was amazing. When I got my hands on that bootleg German show 🤯. That should’ve been put out. Album has great songs! Alphabet St looks like an AV project. I know he didn’t like to spend for videos. I Wish U Heaven was good. Glam Slam still one of my fav songs. Album deserved so much more.

@@Sinnik22 ;3 Oh it does. Kim Jong Ill saw Princes 'Bat-Dance' music video at one point, & He told papers or some people in the USA that he'd LITERALLY sing the ronrey-rong from Team America, ON stage if hollywood would let him play every character in a Batman-movie, Similar but more so than what prince did in the music video.
I SAW the bat-dance.. But never knew he did that until way later. The first time i saw him was as a kid when he was doing a performance on some music video, Grabbed his crotch and said 'Suck it baby!' xD
He was someone who was SO wrong for a Batman superhero-movie, And weirdly-enough at the same time was so horribly-RIGHT, It wouldnt have been the same without him! And while he may not have been the right tone for 'Batman-Returns,' He definitely was qualified to contribute songs to 'Kickass,' Or something else like that (Instead of that stupid over-monologing they do in it) And for whatever reason despite all his talent.. He never completely got his due, But if he had it would have looked like more than one rehire for a superhero-movie in some capacity or another.

Man, Alan Leeds is such an Eeyore. He never seems to get why Prince dumped WB. Leeds acts like the recording industry was the best thing since sliced bread because he was never the artist getting ripped off by it, he was the manager cashing in. The 2 positions are NOT parallel.
One has to wonder, after working for James Brown and Prince for decades, and all the theft by the recording industry STILL happening, why, in 2022, he sounds so unsupportive.

That generation (Leeds, who I respect greatly)is grateful to bosses. Prince was heading up the new generation that asked “why are you a boss when You’re living off of my back?”

@@Sinnik22 Which is my point: Leeds is no dummy. Why is he so invested in the financial microcosim, and not the macrocosim? He knew what the breakdown of the industry profit margins were for artists!
Yet Leeds spends all this time analyzing how Prince made poor business choices, and lost money, yet always avoids the topic of how many MILLIONS from Prince's work fed the WB machine. The lost tour money was chump change by comparison.Leeds believed in that machine. He was counting pennies and missing pounds. Doesn't matter: Prince figured out how 2 beat the system. I used to respect Alan Leeds, but not anymore. He is only an authority on Prince until the early 90's. He doesn't emphasize that enough: Prince did great without him, For 23 years, they had no contact.A little humility goes a long way toward credibility. There is this patriarchal vibe that weirds me out that is not part of the Boomer generation, which definitely challenged the status quo. Prince was only 11 years younger than Alan.

1989, the Batman release...Prince was in the spotlight, for most of that year. The Prince- Kim relationship was plastered across every tabloid for months, and there is a lot of old tea on some of the crazy stuff that went down prior to her disappearance from Paisley. Carmen said Kim's stuff was still in the drawers of the room she stayed in when she first got to Paisley, and Robin Powers dropped a lot of hot goss about those two (as well as herself), after Prince passed: you did get in the wrinkly knee shade. Poor Anna Fantastic was a flash in the pan of his Purple Badness. I never agree with half of what Eric, Alan, and a lot of Revolution leftovers negative commentary about Lovesexy: it was a mind blowing live show, period. Prince, with the exception of Graffiti Bridge, was on fire. The SNL's 15th anniversary performance of Electric Chair on SNL has no competition: flawless. Prince was a beautiful cat, for sure.

People talk about the BAD collaboration that never happened but apparently they did record a song or 2 that is hidden in either MJ or Prince's vault. I read along time ago but can't remember if the song was done before or after Purple Rain and Thriller or During or after The Diamonds and Pearls and Dangerous album.

From what I since from the gentleman that scored the movie was a little jealousy toward prince that did the soundtrack which prince was already with Warner brothers so prince would never take credit for his score but just for the soundtrack but he seemed a bit jealous because of prince's fame and publicity.
