      The window with the soundcut is the same soundcut and the same scene they have used in the first Diablo. It is a intresting way to begin the new trailer with a old thing. I am a old player and that give me manny flashbacks from the old times.

    The bird's eye-view is justified, because framing the hole in the floor gives context (or more like confirmation) to Diablo 3 players. This isn't just some church in an abandoned village. This is the Tristram Cathedral, and it's the source for just about every bad thing in the human part of the Diablo universe.

    • @DemonKnight85
      @DemonKnight85 4 роки тому +30

      We aren't 100% sure on that though. It's very possible that community/cathedral could be some place different. It's also possible it is Tristrram and the Cathedral, just very redesigned. I'm not so sure lore wise though it really holds up, because in 3 games we explored that place to hell (no pun intended) and we would have seen /heard of that place to summon such an important lore figure. I think the framing of the hole in ground was just to give context that these individuals were mining/exploring some place deep underground.

      We havent explored 100% of what lies beneath Tristram Cathedral, and we only explored it on Diablo 1 & 3, and if Diablo 1 is something to go by, there are an unknown ammount of hidden rooms, caves, cellars and other types of crevasses hidden beneath the crumbling building.

    • @dragnridr05

      @@DemonKnight85 The hole in the Tristram cathedral is the same hole that the "Falling Star" created. Spoilers for those that haven't played Diablo 3. So this shows that time has passed. Makes me wonder if we can bring our Nephalim in from D3. And if not, will we get references to them?
      As far as exploring the cathedral to "hell and back" maybe during the first 3 games, what we thought was the underground of the church was really just us going into different areas of Hell. Which would explain why in every time you play through the first Diablo, the layout of the underground always changed. And in this one, we actually see what is underground after Hell has been beaten to "Hell and back".

    • @eyeofthasky
      @eyeofthasky 4 роки тому +18

      @@dragnridr05 naah, the falling star in the D3 video crushed in a big church, basilika type, and here the hole is in a little chapel without side aisles, and only 3 rows of banks -- you clearly can see the dimensions of those two buildings are waaaay different. blizzard loves retcons due to inaccuracy, but that seems unlikely here

    • @dragnridr05
      @dragnridr05 4 роки тому

      @@eyeofthasky Think about the technology the devs could use. As well as space being allotted for the camera and the characters. Tristram cathedral had to be bigger during gameplay to allow for that, but in the cutscenes, it could be smaller because it would be more realistically scaled. If you look at the layout of the town in D4's cutscene, and compare it to the games, then it is a similar layout. Plus the "Falling Star" wouldn't destroy the entire building considering it's size. Once we get more information, then the matter will be settled. Right now, it's ALL rumors and guesses. No matter how accurate we think we all are, including myself.

    In the Diablo universe, she, the daughter of hatred (ironically), is probably the kindest creature towards the Nephalems. She, as their mother, stood against Heaven and Hell to defend her children, the human race, while her husband, afraid of their children, The angel Inarius, sided with heaven in the decision of eradicating the nephalem. that's the short version of the story, i am really looking forward to Diablo IV, even if the game is not any better than D3, the stories and lore were always on point. Was a bit disappointed that he didn't point out the guy with the eye patch going "I know" with that kind of ominous look in his eyes when the cleric talks about just going there for knowledge. It's a subtle hint at the true sinister nature of his character that is revealed later on, but if it's the first time you are seeing it it can be misconstrued as him being a more empathetic type, which feeds into him being the only one that seems to care about the others' lives. And then we find out he only cares about them making it there to be used as tools for bringing back Lilith.

    I think there's a very specific reason why they chose to portray the interior of the church from above. It has all to do with the revelation of the hole in the floor at the altar. For Diablo fans, this a very familiar scene, for the very first game has the player enter the chruch at the start of the game and enter the dungeon through the very same hole in the floor and that game was in isometric view. While not top down, it was still from the above. With the above view they are already setting up the expectations of seeing the hole in the floor for those old fans and as the hole slides into the view, the fans can nod in satisfaction and think to themselves "I knew it!".
    Also, while sliding in through the door would have worked similarly, the church would have appeared empty from the get go, while with top down view, you could also expect to see something else, such as the guy who's clearly praying and you would expect him being there, praying before the altar, no? So it's also playing with your expectation. Showing that church is empty would have lacked the same sort of play. So I would say, the top down view is intentionally set up to mess with your expectations from the get go.

    • @jespermadsen9297
      @jespermadsen9297 4 роки тому +1

      I didn't read your comment beforehand, but I wrote something very similar in response to someone else.
      The first time I saw this, I expected the guy to be in the church and the place to come under some sort of attack with demons (or angels) closing in. I thought I knew exactly how it would go with a birds-eye-view of the whole area and hundreds of beings encircling the place (Like the Kerrigan scene in StarCraft 1).
      By changing the story in my head so quickly it made it much more interesting and that is what they did so well through the whole thing.

The only good game that came out of Blizzard in my opinion was Diablo & Diablo II, sorry to say but I thought WoW was dog shit, but everyone has their own tastes. One reason why Diablo 1&2 did good is because Activision didn't own Blizzard back then. I don't see anything good ever coming from Activision/Blizzard again, Warcraft: Reforged & Diablo 3 is a good example of why. Honestly Blizzard will be forgotten, as the current generation and the future ones won't even know of Blizzard and what they use to be.

    Awesome breakdown of this cinematic. A few points I''d like to make; one of the goals for the Diablo 4 team was calling back to 'the old days' and legacy of the series. The opening scenes of this cinematic reflects that. The first shot with the cross reminds of the first shot of the opening cinematic of the very first Diablo (it was a sword there) and the crumbled town and shutters slamming even more so. And in both Diablo 1 and Diablo 3 the game started by going down into a church to fight the demons within.
    For a long time fan of the series those opening scenes were awesome. But as said, great breakdown!

    The foreshadowing in this cinematic is awesome!
    Notice how it's all about going DOWN (to hell)
    1. You have a hole you go down, followed by an overhead shot of the explorers going down (screen wise 16:35) with the occult triangle pointing downwards as well.
    2. The mechanism to open the door is on the floor (could easily have been on the wall).
    3. You have to kneel and slam your hand DOWN to open it surrendering to her
    3. Once inside, the characters get slammed against the pillars upside down with their arms apart portraying an upside down cross (often associated with satan and hell)
    4. Then we see a shot of the blood platform (from above) and the camera manoeuvers around it and flips upside down to reveal the arrival of Lilith.

      The statues are very reminiscent of old fertility goddesses, look at their bellies and breasts. The characters are put upside down on the bellies of the statues, like a baby would be just before it's birth. Lilith is the mother of mankind in the Diablo-universe, and so it's a play on birthing. She birthed mankind and is now herself being reborn into a physical form, and so the ritual mirrors childbirth. This is also why she is translucent, like a fetus in it's early stages.

    Hey man. I just watched your reaction videos to different game trailers and it's interesting to see the videos analysed and the techniques discussed because I feel like games are always overlooked as legitimate creative work. So hopefully more people see your videos and think about the work that goes into them. My favourite game trailers have always been for each expansion of World of Warcraft. They're high-budget and epic. If you've never seen them I would recommend watching them all, but it's hard for me to pick which one would be best for your videos.

    nice react. I will say the other reason for using a bird's eye view in the chapel rather than a first person perspective zoom is because it helps build anticipation better because you never see what is coming until it is in frame. A walk in shot would be more dramatic, but this early on we are still in suspenseful setting building mode. The above view pan also helps because you get a more gradual dying of the light and growth of the darkness and the hole remains hidden until the last moment.

    The background of the story really adds to the depth of the movie, as it pulls together some really fantastic story elements as well as posing some new questions to the viewer. I don't think elements like that really are appreciated when people craft an opening cinematic/opening scene in a movie. 'Lilith' was featured prominently as a "oh this is cool, but it does not relate to what we are doing right now" element in the previous title, so the images trigger memories associated to her that fill out some of the elements shown on screen, which gives an enhanced emotional response from the viewer.
    The 'Priest' is a member of an organization you have been working with since the first game, so seeing him in this situation draws you further in to the scene as you have an existing emotional attachment to a character that is going through this.
    The church is in the very first town in the first game in the series, that place has become a gateway to hell, so the viewer *knows* something is going to happen, which makes the first cut to the shutter clanging in the town have more of an effect as you are already in an excited state because of the setting.
    When a sequel trailer is requested, I would suggest looking up the trailers from the earlier games as it gives background for you to fall back upon so the smaller details become much more akin to Easter Eggs, which I think is a super important part to any sort of extension of a mythos/story, as getting those Easter Eggs in the trailer is actually a big part of crafting a satisfying trailer.
    That being said if you just want to react to the effects, you can ignore what I just said :D
    Great work on the breakdown as always. I also suggest looking at the opening cinematic for World of Warcraft. it's from 2004, but the effects are still well done and I think you would get a kick out of seeing the earlier work Blizzard has done and how far they have come, while still (in my opinion at least) be slightly shocked that it is content from a 16 year old game.

    The portal turning into the cape was fantastic. The whole portal-creation overhead shot blew my mind. Lilith is the mother of humanity, who joined with an Archangel to create their own army who could harness both the powers of heaven and hell. They wanted to stop what was called the "Eternal War" between demons and angels. So it makes sense that she, "our" mother, would be born into the world in a similar fashion as we are (placenta and embryo). But you know, in an appropriately fucked up way. lol.
    Please also check out the Warframe opening cinematic. It's phenomenal.

      "Its a nice touch that when the ''demon'' said there is no light in here"
      Light means Heaven... In Diablo lore since the guy was a priest of Light.
      "The daughter of darkness, hatered and mother of demons"
      In the game Lilith is mother of HUMANS... not Demons. In Diablo demons were born out of the body of first prime evil (Destruction) while angels were born out of the body of Anu (Creator). It was the deserters of both factions who created the Human world and humans Archangel Inarius and Lilith with their followers.
      Lilith in Diablo is protecting humans however she takes "by any means neccessery" a bit too far.

    I think they used the birdview to keep the mistery of "where those voices come from" in a death village, not showing every corner of the church as you could see if you go in from the doors, it also helps to make the transition to the hole more smoother.
    I love the scene when they get into the room, the contrast again between warmth and cold; they are illuminated by the torch and when the coin guy gets closer to the bald guy, both get dark, only ambient light there to show that they were doomed as they stept in.
    As for the Matrix scene... it's easier to do it with a rig (no anatomic limitations), you can move his upper chest any way you want without moving his hips, even stretching a bit to make it look more... phantasmagorical.
    Aside that, my favorite part is the end, making such a gorgeous scene out of blood petals, the white light, showing her godly and some kind of romantic aura. Like a mother, someone you love and admire. Brilliant

    Gorgeous Cinematic Trailer and great overview from film making perspective. With the overhead shots, something to consider when analyzing is that the game plays from an overhead perspective. Others have commented on this, but there are contextual aspects of this trailer that add a lot of emotional depth and resonance for fans. For instance, the first shot in its entirety is a very intentional throwback to the more gritty styles of D1 and D2, especially the opening cinematic to D1 with the town, the door swinging, the dungeon crawling. Also, as another commenter mentioned, the air that is sucked out of the room when you see Lilith's persona but she hasn't yet been identified. When the priest finally says "Lilith" and then cuts back to her full face, there is a lot of resonance there as well.
    This is what takes a trailer of this caliber to the next level altogether, because it pays homage to the fans of the series while also providing a cinematic experience of the highest quality.
