If people like to call themselves hipsters because they can feel more confident about themselves or feel like they belong to a special group, then go for it, if that makes them happy
@webbst i divide people into two separate categories. people that label others, and people that dont. if you belong to the 2nd category, you're cool and will most likely get along with not only me, but everyone. doesnt that make sense? us real people need to just sit back and laugh at all the others. as POP in america has become exponentially more mindless, this "hipster" personality has become more and more apparent.
@rastaman77789 This is the core of the debate, the denial of the label supposedly makes you more of a "hipster" because the ideology of a "hipster" is to keep your individual identity as opposed to subscribing to the label and allowing your self to be grouped into a common life style that masses flock toward. Hipster is a tag not many "hipsters" wan't because it automatically causes them to defend their taste, morals, and personality, which from "hipster" to "hipster" varies immensely.
@Crieph Sort of. Hipster is this style where you wear nothing but vintage really avaunt garde stuff, but you think it makes you cooler than everyone else. Hipsters also listen to a lot of obscure bands and artists, and think that you musical taste makes you better than everyone else. I mean.. it's basically doing everything differently than other people on purpose because you think it makes you look better... there was this article I should post.
@zang99 It's a social filter with a pretty sizable track record of accuracy. You're not going to change that with words. Yes, I do put you all in a file. I'm just more aware of my file cabinet than most people. A person will make at least 26 assessments of you in 60 seconds, regardless of how "open-minded" they are.
You girls nailed this 100%.I live in Philly & my neighborhood's become hipster central over the yrs.You even got the cigarettes right down to the brand-the approved hipster cigarettes are Camel Lights first, then Parliament Lights,& if they're really pretentious, then American Spirits only. And yeah, the guys w/their 'ironic' mustaches. And at the store, they're all buying hummus, greek yogurt,& either Kashi or some 'random ironic' cereal like Cap'n Crunch or something 'nostalgic'.LOL,ah hipsters
@HappierHealthierYou because its all about being different and rebelling against the norms. hipsters are just misunderstood rebels who dont want to follow the normal mods of rebelling against the previous generation. most typically we use the method of emulating the generation before last (i.e. shopping at thrift stores). another method is by doing everything that the mainstream rebellion deems as a dumb idea (i.e. smoking, drinking pbr, organic food). the more you know :)
@zang99 well, because being fat doesn't "affect/hurt" the people around them. when people smoke in public, everybody else is affected through second-hand smoking, especially when there are little kids around. I don't care if people smoke on their own time in their own place (I don't judge them any differently), but as long as it doesn't affect other people.
I like indie rock,I like classic rock,I like soul music,I like rap music.I dont like mainstream things.I like foreign films,i like independent movies,i dont like things when they get popular I also like to play basketball, soccer, football, ive read almost every bukowski book.one of my favorite websites is pitchfork.i like adele.i dont like MTV or the jersey shore,im not a hater. so i got some hipster in me but i also like other things hipsters dont do or say what category would i fall under?
Th funniest Hipster Video of all-time has just been released on UA-cam. It stars the beard and Mustache world champion Jack Passion as a nature Hipster. Look up "Hipster The Get Down"
@zang99 I'm not contradicting myself. If you want to get offended, that's you're problem. I never said I thought you were stupid, etc. I said this is what I see when I see someone smoking. I was giving you incite as to what I thinking when I come across a smoker in public. I could also mention my observation that it seems like you're rationalizing an addiction that you actually couldn't quit on a dime, even if you wanted to. I still wouldn't be insulting. I'd be presenting a hypothesis.
What qualities does it take to put a person under a stereotype? is it right to put people into a stereotype? There are just people who share traits, some share more of the same traits with eachother than they do with other people. I just dislike when negative connotations are put onto entire 'groups' of people. Some of the extreme examples of "hipsters" do really exist in reality, but some people will judge without getting to know an individual and assume he or she is "just like the rest of them" in the stereotype group.
@zang99 Try quitting. Women do not like weak men. Smoking is a sign of mental weakness. It shows you can't handle life without a chemical. You can't change everyone else, but you can change yourself. I live by this ideal and it has done wonders for me.
@smilinginsepteber That would have made sense if she was talking about this video when she said that. She wasn't, she was referring to Hipsters when she said that. A lot of them don't like things if they're popular. Or they liked them until they became popular.
(They do that same thing at the malls or other places!) Jacob Keen1 month ago man hipsters piss me off, I walk around university campuses and see them scattered everywhere, not giving a shit where they are. They sit in the middle of a footpath with a mac/ iphone or just lying on the grass smoking a cigarette,
@lanaseahorse correction, half of the people from Minneapolis are hipsters. people outside of the city are just like all the "ya hey der" folk from ND or WI or the UP.
and the healer of those who are tired of the program, we all need it lets protect it in ways traditional and nontraditional... case in point Tiger Trap, amazing band, sad sad name, lets make a stand a collectively change their name from Tiger Trap to Tiger Lily in our music players or whatever, we all know you've get em.. and if yr still on cds then tape it over that sukkah! if your on tapes well idunno..
@zang99 lol I never said don't smoke or anything. I simply stated that "It's just a cigarette" is a dumb statement. Because of second hand smoke, and the dangers to those around smokers. If you want to go kill your lungs away from me, I'm cool with that, I could care less about you. But don't smoke near me or say that "it's is just a cigarette" cuz it's not!
The people who are called "hipsters" now, were not hipsters 10 years ago, they were just little kids. The kids in college, 10 years ago, who looked EXACTLY like the hipsters of today called themselves "Emo". They listened to Indie music and others called them Indie. They wore clothes from thrift stores. Now, those same kids are 30 and still listen to the same music but now it's called the new Folk music, they are called old hipsters and Emo is the new Goth. (*i posted this on another vid.too)
I live in Montpelier VT. (sigh) We are experiencing hipster overload. (sigh) It's difficult living here. Very very hard. Hipsterism is so "way cool" here. Everyone acts like brain dead robots except - they aren't acting. They buy "recycled" clothes at exclusive shops. I saw a woman buy a used $39 coat for $100. She did it to LOOK....cool. $12 for a plate of bland vegetables. I had a woman at the grocery store SCREAM at me for not buying "organic" & "local". She drove a $35,000 Volvo. Sigh.
Charles Bukowski? I normally think of Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson as being the most popular with hipsters. At any rate, they're all great writers.
@oxfordpictionary georges bataille, jim jarmusch, kenneth anger, christopher owens, harmony korine, nathan williams, matthew barney, thurston moore, and lou barlow. is that hipster enough for you? if you don't know what im talking about im probably much more of a hipster than you... jokes
LOL oh and here in MN they all live in NE Minneapolis, listen to "cool" indie rock and have the Minnesota outline tattooed on them with red dot for Twin Cities...all they same
@webbst EXACTLY!!! i think its supposed to be hippie and gangster? idk thats what ive heard. but yea fuck labels. (its awesome in america btw. you just have to have the right mindset) its impossible to do that anyway. like this video states here, "hipsters" call other "hipsters" hipsters all the time. because there is no one label for every person. i think this is directed towards the kids that TRY to be unique and ACT like they dont care what people think.
i love how this is in the traditional "i think it will look more artistic" hipster black and white. i hate it when people think they are such great photographers because their picture is in black and white.
"So you think Portland's like the new Seattle?" I live in Portland. There are so many hipsters there I guarantee you cannot be outside for five minutes without seeing one.
This was made in Minneapolis wasn't it? I think you guys were in Steeple People, The Wedge and outside Hum's. If I'm right, Uptown was the perfect location for this film. :)
geezus christ so many of my freinds are going through a hipster phase they all wear stuff from american vintage or out of the closet they stay in cafes always writing poetry having a tumblr acting like they are so intelligent wen they put a quote they didnt even write on fb or watever sigh* im just waiting til it passes they go over board with indie bands too -.-
Haha I have said everything they did and I'm pretty sure I have their clothes too. But I don't call myself a hippie -- no, that's too mainstream for me. :)
haha that is like everybody I know!! especially the smoking while sporting thrift store cloths.. Probably has something to do with the fact that I live near an art school/in the 'artistic community' of my city
Yeah, I hate it when my hipster friend (although she denies it) says that "hipsters are lame" when she's a hipster herself! And she goes around accusing people of being a "hipster" just because they like a certain item. Pfft.
Man, I'm cheap as shit and only shop at Goodwill, but my parents secretly give me an unusually high allowance as long as I keep good grades in college because my Dad is a doctor and my mom organizes local 5ks. so I went out and bought some Ray-Bans.. Man I'm so independent and unique...
Hipsterdom is the ultimate catch 22. By definition, hipsters are supposed to be all caught up on the latest fashion, music, and whatever else is in vogue. At the same time, they are supposed to detest anything that is "mainstream". They spend all of their energy on trying to be ahead of the curve, then they get mad when people call them out for doing so. To all you hipsters: Nobody thinks any better of you simply because you listened to Animal Collective before Meriweather Post Pavilion.
Hipsters are hippies that dress like yuppies from the hippie era.
This is so relevant in 2022
"Is this vintage or used?"
Most of the time it will be used!
Some rare finds, (expensive) will still have the tags.
If you disliked, you might be a hipster...
Organic foods, smokes?!😂
If people like to call themselves hipsters because they can feel more confident about themselves or feel like they belong to a special group, then go for it, if that makes them happy
Most accurate one I've seen so far
You're missing "You've probably never heard of it" and "I only smoke American Spirits"
"Is this organic?"
next scene: "I need a cigarette."
Why ask "is this organic" if your going to turn around and smoke...mine as we'll eat yah fruit with all the nasty pesticides and insecticides
So smoking is no different than literal poisoning? Wow internet really is full of morons
Likin' the vid, especially the parts where hipsters are calling other hipsters gross/weird/losers ^_^
Hipsters remind me of the movie Idiocracy.
Okay, this made me laugh, and I probably owe you something. Good luck in collecting.
Omg, its everybody I used to work with @ Urban Outfitters sumed up in one 1:30min video lol! So true, all of this! Lol. Love it :)
@jkatz55 sorry, my mistake. you should be happy though. that means all that smoking hasn't aged your skin prematurely.
My favorite is what the smoker "says" at the end - reminded me of about 40% of the in-person "conversations" I have w/my favorite hipster!
@Crieph Sort of. Hipster is this style where you wear nothing but vintage really avaunt garde stuff, but you think it makes you cooler than everyone else. Hipsters also listen to a lot of obscure bands and artists, and think that you musical taste makes you better than everyone else. My dad was an original hipster waaaay back in the. I seen the photos ! He was a cool cat back in the day. Love you pops.
@zang99
It's a social filter with a pretty sizable track record of accuracy. You're not going to change that with words.
Yes, I do put you all in a file. I'm just more aware of my file cabinet than most people. A person will make at least 26 assessments of you in 60 seconds, regardless of how "open-minded" they are.

@darkstar19 Yeah "hipster" is such an American expression. We say "indie kid" etc in the UK
@HappierHealthierYou because its all about being different and rebelling against the norms. hipsters are just misunderstood rebels who dont want to follow the normal mods of rebelling against the previous generation. most typically we use the method of emulating the generation before last (i.e. shopping at thrift stores). another method is by doing everything that the mainstream rebellion deems as a dumb idea (i.e. smoking, drinking pbr, organic food). the more you know :)
haha yess this needs to be broadcasted on TV!!!!
this may be the best "shit ___ say" video i have ever seen. I live in seattle and this made me pee my pants because it is 100% accurate.
@zang99 well, because being fat doesn't "affect/hurt" the people around them. when people smoke in public, everybody else is affected through second-hand smoking, especially when there are little kids around. @halation777 well I'll be. This video felt so cozy, I guess my instinct for MN accents is better than I thought.
@vickilg123 Yeah pretty much everyone says they're indie in England i haven't heard anyone say hipster here.
@zang99
I'm not contradicting myself.
If you want to get offended, that's you're problem.

I'm no hipster because being hipster is so mainstream. Oh shit, does that make me a hipster ?
It has a life-time of updates. Just update it through image-lines website.
@lanaseahorse correction, half of the people from Minneapolis are hipsters. people outside of the city are just like all the "ya hey der" folk from ND or WI or the UP.

I viewed and liked this video way before it got so many views and likes.
that awesome moment when both of the top comments are by the same person
@tazabilly They are not becoming the new scene kids... they ARE the old scene kids just a few years older.
I like the smoking clips. "omg, look at me, I'm SMOKING! But I'm only doing it ironically, right? Right?!?"
@PeachesAndSkeet wow..for some weird reason I didn't notice that it was in black and white until I read your comment
"hey look at that black and white picture! oh my god, that is such good photography."
Hey jKatz55 make another Hipster vid LOL ,like a sequel or something.I will watch it .
You seem like you are reviving Grunge. Big Up for Portland !!

@smilinginsepteber It already existed, it was just underground.
1,064 people saw this video before it was mainstream.
@arliacne i think that's the point. teenage girls don't enunciate.
i love how this is in the traditional "i think it will look more artistic" hipster black and white. i hate it when people think they are such great photographers because their picture is in black and white.
@sammysf415 So is your grammar, but the rest of us don't complain. Oh, and by the way, I agree.
"So you think Portland's like the new Seattle?"

You forgot. "You probably haven't heard of it."
"i liked it before it was popular " story of youtubes music life
I can't like this enough!!!
love the hipster life! Keep up the good work girls
I like it when the hipsters get on here and try to defend themselves while pretending the video isn't about them.
geezus christ so many of my freinds are going through a hipster phase they all wear stuff from american vintage or out of the closet they stay in cafes always writing poetry having a tumblr acting like they are so intelligent wen they put a quote they didnt even write on fb or watever sigh* im just waiting til it passes they go over board with indie bands too -.-
#1 thing I'd say hipsters do is deny that they're a hipster or have a similar attitude
@vickilg123 thats what i always thought! i was so confused when i heard people using 'hipster'
It´s applied to pretty much everything in life in all movements, and not just hipsters.
"I liked it before it was popular"
Haha I have said everything they did and I'm pretty sure I have their clothes too. But I don't call myself a hippie -- no, that's too mainstream for me. :)
Hipsters are posers being the same group of people we've had for years just under a new name. The cigarette smoking is a dead giveaway.
@HardcoreFlexx couldn't agree more...
I go to art school, I see these kids every day. I think...I think I'm becoming one.
I liked it before it was popular. Yep, that pretty much sums it up. (indie game guy hipster).
This is so good
haha that is like everybody I know!! especially the smoking while sporting thrift store cloths.. Probably has something to do with the fact that I live near an art school/in the 'artistic community' of my city
i love how people say they're 'hipsters' .. i don't think i've ever used the word hipster, where i'm from in England, we say they're 'indie'
@donluchitti it is Minneapolis.
@oxfordpictionary yeah, and needs some irony and Steampunk!
@blazingstar1994 LMAO !! that comment made my morning just a little better
@jkatz55 Don't listen to Jessslin11, you guys are like so pretty and your hair is ah-may-zing! love the video
I've always seen hipsters as good looking people who can look good in anything they wear or do.
Ladies your hair is too clean to pass for hipster, re-do this video after not showering for a month
I loved this ladies. 1,125 people are hipsters hating this video.
@KpopAng
I agree.
If you kiss her and she tastes like mothballs, dump her.
@zang99
Thanks for making my day, haha. A peddle-stool.
my life is over if you did not purchase that eagle sweater.
Another favorite...."Do these pants come with a carabiner loop?"
@darkdudironaji Pabst Blue Ribbon. It's a brand of beer.
It's hard to smoke when someone is filming.
Yeah, I hate it when my hipster friend (although she denies it) says that "hipsters are lame" when she's a hipster herself! And she goes around accusing people of being a "hipster" just because they like a certain item. Pfft.
Whenever a hipster claim they knew something before it was cool, i give them a cookie. :3
