Hi Steve, I also visited a water well in Lijang little alley way, there was a signboard saying that apparently back in the 12 century Genghis Kahn had stopped there as well on this adventures ! FYI , we loved Lijiang and stayed in a suburb a hidden gem called Suhe! Visited even a museum there about the Tea and horse caravan path story ! Very unique and historical indeed

I have not watched your entire video yet. But just based on your title question, my answer is Yes and more. Coming from SE Asia where landscape is less diverse (because climate is standard hot), China has a lot of beautiful and diverse landscapes and quaint ancient towns if you just know where to look for them, and not just the touristy ones. Japan is pretty with beautiful landscapes too, but not as diverse as China. China shares the tallest mountain ranges with neighbouring countries, has the 2nd biggest desert Taklamakan desert, the ancient silk road (full of historical context), alpine as well as tropical forests and lakes and verdant grasslands, hot springs, Siberian temperature in the most northern parts, etc. Provinces with the most beautiful sights imo include Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and these are provinces that also happen to have the most diverse ethnicities, from indo-european tribes (northern/western part), central eurasian to those of austronesian origins down in the southwest region. How do you even start to compare a big continental country the size of entire Europe (minus western Russia) with an island country Japan. What you see in Japan esp the architecture of their temples etc actually was modelled after that of the Tang Dynasty. Even the geisha look and costume came from the Tang era.

If there's no tourist or little of it, then there will be very few shops and eateries which will make the place quite boring after a day of self exploration. Then the place will look quite run down. It's tourists and commerce that keep this once vibrant ancient town along the southern ancient silk road alive and still humming. As in most popular tourist attractions in China (as well as in other countries), to get away from the tourists, you just have to walk further and further from the touristy parts and then you could almost have the entire area to yourself, but that will take a lot more leg power. Tourists esp group tours, don't venture further than the main areas as they have limited time to do so. Also they can't stay too long in the area, so for independent traveller like myself, I will choose to stay at least a night if I want to see the town with fewer tourists. At night or early morning, it's so tranquil and beautiful.

Really enjoyed the walk through Lijiang. I've noticed a similar pattern in your videos in that you never drop a dime on the local establishments. I realize you're not there to make then rich but Chinese especially feel offended when they offer you information, hospitality and allow you to browse generously, but then you walk away without even a small purchase.. Given you do not speak the language, they may forgive you, but no doubt they we're talking behind your back when you left each store. When in China it's a good idea to patronize the shop owners even if it's only a buck or two - even if you're not planning to return.. Enjoy

@@Steve-Owens It´s great to hear you´ve arrived at the pinnacle of socialist know how, but I´m afraid you learned little of the Chinese mentality on your journey. Yes, the Chinese are some of the most generous and friendliest people in the world, but they did not get to where they are with smiles. They are indeed some of the most capitalistic people in the world. Their society works on favors - you scratch my back and I´ll scratch yours. That goes for being neighbors or simply patronizing their shops. If you want their gratitude you need to provide something in return. We are far from imperialists, just good conservatives, but I have been married to a Chinese woman for 15 years and have learned a thing or two about their culture. What you´ve displayed is fine for tourists, but don´t expect that sort of accommodation when living day to day in China. Hopefully you found your way back home before the lock-down and are safe within the socialist borders.

@Glenn Long You Dumb cock. I lived in China for 10 Years, and I speak Chinese just fine. You don't know the first thing about Chinese culture, you just think if you tip a Chinese shopkeeper, you can lower them to your stupid American ways. After all, "why would a Chinese person want to talk to you, unless you give them money" What a disgusting way to think..
Maybe you might at least think of your "Woman" as a Lady, sorry buddy but I still find your attitude sucks.. Listen to yourself.. ??
