@@walkerholiday9631you know it. Music is always about the listener, if it wasn't for South African listeners love for Sixto's talent and soul. What a beautiful soul that Rodriguez shared what he had with us, those who loved his music. So yes, it always about us those who loved what he had to say.

Nothing about his tours of Australia & NZ, the sale of his LPs in Aust & NZ, the use of an Australian record label. The live LP recorded in Australia. All of that while SA seemed to believe he was dead. The money from sales that went to him instead of disappearing somewhere in SA - the dropping, unexplained, of the search for the money, the fact that SA wasn't the sole place that knew of him. Just a few things.

I hear ya! I just watched the movie and it really touched my heart and I'm just so glad that he got the recognition eventually that he deserved so we shouldn't be sad but be happy for his life because God always gives back and it's so much more generous to good people then we can ever be to him. Yes bad things happen to good people sometimes but that's not God's fault the scriptures show that sometimes we're just in the wrong place at the wrong time or we reap what we sow.

I discovered Rodriguez during my first year at University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1983! As architectural students we were always listening to music that was often not mainstream, and boy did this man deliver. We were rebellious students in a time of extreme censorship in a country troubled by Apartheid. Playing his songs was like sticking up two fingers to the government and its laws. We loved this enigmatic man, his music became the sound track to our generation. Although we could buy his records nobody knew anything about him, it was before the internet, rumours spread, even that he had committed suicide on stage. Thank goodness for the guys who decided to track him down!
Thank you for your great music Sugar Man!!

I just watched the documentary and have now fallen into a Rodríguez hole, trying to discover as much as possible about this man and watch his live concerts on UA-cam. I’m as amazed as his personality and character, as much as his story. It’s incredible to see how humble and human he is, completely uncharacteristic of legendary artists. He is shy and not at all comfortable in the limelight, but yet when he starts playing and singing, you see the mind behind the man, and it’s beautiful. He expresses himself completely through his music, and I’m so glad that he was found again and able to do this at least later in life. His is both a sad and happy story, and we have become better for knowing it and being able to hear this legend play.

Old Soul this is like déjà vu for Detroit. Tommy James had no idea he was a hit in Pittsburgh and when he went there to check it out he didn’t even have a band anymore. He needed one right away and heard a band playing somewhere around his hotel and just like they became the Shondell’s. Australia and South Africa were just too far away for something like that to happen to Rodrigues I guess. The story of both of these artist can only happen in rock ‘n’ roll.

This man...this man is so obviously tired after a life of hard labor, and getting rejected, and, yet, like a father at the end of a brutal day, he senses we children need something from him, so he digs deep, and gives us what he can. But, as another poster pointed out, it's late, so very late. So, I say, as one of his bereft children, FUCK APARTHEID and FUCK AMERICAN ANTI-HISPANIC RACISM that kept this lovely man, this father to so many musicians, and poets, and just plain downtrodden, from telling us what he needed to tell us at the height of his power and strength. God bless you, Father Sixto. I pray you live HEALTHY and STRONG.
