They started out singing gospel as THE 5 SPIRITS OF HARMONY.They were from Salisbury, North Carolina. They made their first film in 1934 called" She's My Lilly [I'm Her Willie ] Their name was changed to THE CABIN KIDS in their second film from 1934 "Way Down Yonder."
That's awesome. This is from a little rascals episode. I swear these are some of the best short flicks ever made. When I was a kid they used to have "Our Gang" and "Little Rascal" shorts every day when I I got home from school. Great times
When I was a real little kid in San Diego, Johnny Downs, ex-Our Gang member, hosted the "Little Rascals" on local TV. This short, "Beginner's Luck" played frequently so that by the time I was three I had "Dinah" memorized. On a long car trip back East in 1956, my brother and I started singing "Dinah" over and over again from the back seat, driving our poor mother to distraction.
Yes. That is funny! But the one that is definitely a laugh riot is the part where the musician's toupee flew off his head! I wish they didn't cut the part where the man turnes around at the boys and says through clenched teeth: "Listen, you kids are beggining to get into my hair!"
Those Cabin Kids were freaking awesome and sooooo talented!!! Remember seeing them as kid on Captain Penny at noon lunch from school and 50 years later Love them!!
The genesis of all of the genres of music created by black kids. Blues, Rap, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock&Roll. It has Rhythm, rhymes, hook, theme, catch phrases..all the elements encapsulated in Black American culture & music. Its ours & you cant have it
Just outstanding!! I will never forget this song along with Old McDonald done in another Our Gang episode when I too was a child growing up, pure talent!!...
That is So Heartwarming. I am 61 and Grew Up Watching the Little Rascals. Life was Simpler and We did Not Have All these Distractions Like Social Media and Video Games. They Both do More Harm than Good. Grace and Peace, Ralph in CT
Every night why do I shake with fright? beacause my Dinah might change her mind about me... Dinah, if she went to china, I'd hop an oceanliner just to speak to Dinah Lee... *smile*
The guy with the toupee was funny, too! That was a standard part of his act. He was also in a Three Stooges short called "Disorder in the Court," and the same thing happens there!
vccstudents The man who loses his toupee is the character actor James C. Morton. He appeared in a variety of films, including several others with the Three Stooges.
I was born in '62 and Rascals reruns were ALWAYS my favorite. This is the version of Dinah I knew. It was only later that I learned that there was nothing jazzy or syncopated about this song until Louis Armstrong vamped it up and (at least according to Ken Burns) that changed everything - jazz.
I used to shadow at the safe school and on Fridays I got to show the children films & such. Can you believe it? The children had NEVER seen the Little Rascals, and they laughed as hard as I still did.
Outstanding! Many other of their singing can be found on UA-cam. I first saw them on the Little Rascals: "Beginner's Luck" singing, "Dinah" (as seen here) and Teacher's Beau" singing "Old McDonald Had a Farm." Then they sing with Gene Autry ("After You're Gone" and an extended, "Dinah"), Bing Crosby ("Little David Play on Your Harp" and "Swanee River"), and in some short films, "Pink Lemonade" and "Gift in Rhythm." They were so talented. In reading their bio, all of them have passed away years ago.
The Cabin Kids appeared in several Our Gang shorts in the 1930s and they would be singing in their scenes. They were one of the few African American quintet groups composed of children that I recall and they were siblings of course. Their mother was Beatrice Hall. I am not sure if their parents were in showbusiness. As of 1935, the names and ages were: Ruth,11; Helen,10;James,9; Winnie,6; and Fred 4. I think there might be one or wo still alive but not sure.
I mean every song they sang, they did it so naturally like they’re not even in front of a camera. Wow. Little Winifred ‘s voice is so cute to me. You wouldn’t expect the baby girl to have that deep voice. I feel cheated bc I should’ve been born at this time 🙄
Hello lulu if you have any information about your grandmother, she was so cute lol, and the rest od your aunts and uncles can you please post anything that you have I would love to read about their lives Thank You Anita
For years I thought it was "Diner Lee", as they're saying. Wasn't until I saw the most excellent Louis Armstrong's incredible version that I understood it to be Dinah. Armstrong's version - recorded overseas, where he was allowed to be his dignified self, & was not forced to wear ridiculous, demeaming costumes, as black perforners often had to do here in the States to be on camera, was the beginning of popular music/jazz singing. All the greats after that, credit him with starting it all. Y'all should check it out.

pbrgma1 really? I live about 40 minutes from Salisbury. Never knew that about them.
That's awesome. This is from a little rascals episode. I swear these are some of the best short flicks ever made. When I was a kid they used to have "Our Gang" and "Little Rascal" shorts every day when I I got home from school. Great times
I love the way they harmonized, makes me wish I grew up with siblings to sing with.

I just read these children were from salisbury, NC wow, never knew that,....... they had class & talent. Never gets old. thanx for posting.
50 years later and I still can't NOT laugh when big brother's head hits little brother's head. Perfect sound effect.
D Me Yes! Absolutely funny. That was part of the appeal of these kids in the Our Gang films. You laughed at the situations and nobody got hurt.
@@dennissmith8031 No doubt. I'm the youngest out of 5 - an older bro & 3 older sisters, same as them. In the 60"s, this was us...lol.

Hal Roach was a lunatic......lmao
When they hit heads at the end, that conk noise made it so funny.
Beautiful kids and SO talented!! They were trailblazers! ❤
I remember watching this as a kid in the 70's and I never forgot it. I've been wanting to hear this again for a long time, thanks for posting!
I love when the little bald one does his solo, so cute!
It's even better when they bow behind him and clunk his head.😂 The sound effects people on The Little Rascals were brilliant!
Ba ba dee ba da ba da ba booooop boooooo!!
Those Cabin Kids were freaking awesome and sooooo talented!!! Remember seeing them as kid on Captain Penny at noon lunch from school and 50 years later Love them!!
Such talented charming children.
The Cabin Kids were also in the W.C. Fields/Bing Crosby film "Missispippi"
Two people that truly loved children. Yahuck! XP

They make their harmonies so sound easy.
They were too cute. I would've loved seeing more of them.

I remember watching this in the 60s , I still laugh out loud for classic tv from yesteryear!!!!!
Still in complete shock. There were way too talented this is absolutely amazing
That little guy with the distressed look steals the show!
I don't know why but this popped in my head so I had to look it up. I liked their appearances in the Little Rascals.
The same here just thought about them and looked them up.
There is a definite overlap among the character actors who appeared in these short-subjects (as well as the feature films) during this period.
I love his line:" Listen, you kids are beginning to get into my hair!" I'm thinking "Too late! They done did!" Lol!
Ain't nobody can do this better! ❤️
Love this!💕

I hope you've seen the Armstrong version. Pretty astounding.
Same here!

I remember seeing this on The Little Rascals.
That kid cracks me up when he say bop a dep do do do. He hardly ever said anything else that whole song.
One of the best renditions of the Bing Crosby/Mills Brothers monster hits.
one of my fav classics ever!!
Just wish it were longer!
That noise conk at the end made it so funny.
I remember this from the smallest one. Baba dimba biblyba dembity bo.

That opening piano riff was on point!!

I love that in the end, one of the men gets his weave snatched
We'd always wait for The Cabin kids episode.....always feel nostalgic when I see the Gibbon kids on What's Happening....Bubblin Brown sugar episode..
The sound of those little feet tapping 🥰
I mean every song they sang, they did it so naturally like they’re not even in front of a camera. Wow. Little Winifred ‘s voice is so cute to me. You wouldn’t expect the baby girl to have that deep voice. I feel cheated bc I should’ve been born at this time 🙄
It is this song, 'Dinah', that inspired Francis Rose Shore to adapt it as her professional name.
I always thought the little guy, at 0:40 was hysterical. Also, when they clonk heads at the end.
This short introduced Alfalfa Switzer.
They were introduced as Tom and Jerry for their first appearance 😂
They're all too cute...and then there's the "applause".
I have this episode on an old vhs tape...used to watch it when i was little and laugh til i cried...
Beautiful
Still hilarious 80+ years after the fact!
my left ear enjoyed this
it's the jackson 5!
@:40 still has me 😂😂
The Cabin Kids appeared in several 1930's films.
It's so catchy :0000

One of the best renditions of the song this side of Crosby and/or the Mills Brothers m
This song is 5 hours too short.
@joesolese HE CAME TO BURY CAESAR!!! This was one of my favorite little rascals shorts.

Too short. I could listen to that forever.

D Me I didn’t like his version 🤷🏽♀️this is the best version I can’t get enough.
@@monicarwells2 Please! Mr. Armstrong singing this in that clip I'm talking about is like watching the Mona Lisa being painted.

Old McDonald’ was a classic too
We kids watched this. We saw some black kids singing. We didn't care what color they were. They were on tv and we weren't.
I always wondered what the name of this song was.
I've only ever heard it on the little rascals
Pretty kids😱😱😱😱
They got issue 😂😂😂
@movierocks Thanks so much for the age info, it helps my research greatly!!
Dina dina if you wanna do china.. classic
this is wonderful too bad rhe left audio chanel got lost in the upload ;-(
It was said on IMDB that one of them was Dorothy Dandridge. I wonder which one.

This was after wheezer and Maryann disappearance I think spanky replace wheezer like how buckwheat replace stymie and alfalfa replace soccty
@ftsjr I haven't seen this in years! I used to die laughing when that kid did that!
Hello Lulu, has their ever been some kind of written history done, regarding The Cabin Kids? I would love to learn more about their lives: family history, etc. - Jim
That ending tho
Theyre so cute!
That little girl in the back ringing a bell or something looks like Shirley Temple, no?@1:00
Her name was Cecila Murray.
What was he about to call them kids when he introduced them
@Juliaflo Thanks for the info!
@vccstudents You're welcome.
Why didn't they put out a funk of them when they were in their forties
Sadly, they never got paid their worth. Exploitation of beautifully talented kids with that nonsense ending. Maddening!
They should have won
Was it James "Darling" or Frederick "Honey" Hall who went "Bop-a-dee-bop-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo"?
+Steven Scott Honey
Thank you!
Sound is gone :-(
