I have a kid who doesnot like to write but he can write so well, At the same time he likes removing trash from the bin and the punishment i give him is to sit and no more play but yet he keeps doing it Equally you he knows so we that two persons are not allowed to jump in the trampoline but thats when he gets in He look kindly to see if they are two then he goes inside
Hi and thank you for reaching out. We would encourage to explore what the child's motivation is and use that as a form of reinforcement. We would also recommend providing predictability and communicating the expectations of the task he has to do (Eg: first writing, then reward) or when he can play in the trampoline via visuals. If you would like to find out more about how to create visuals that may be helpful, do check out our series on Teaching Materials here: ua-cam.com/video/YqQbctFW9lo/v-deo.html We hope that you have found this helpful. Should you require further and more specific support, do reach us at enquiries@autismmalaysia and our team would love to get in touch with you for an initial appointment. Thank you!

Hello. My son johnny has ASD and ADHD. He's in OT and music and speech therapy, and I homeschool him for 60 minutes a day. My wife is an elementary school teacher, and she's said that ABA is basically common sense parenting. From this video, I'd have to agree. Rewarding negative behaviour is bad, and I kind of get the instructions because I think most parents don't bother to understand this. Is there more to ABA?
Hello Michael, thank you for sharing and reaching out. ABA essentially is based on 3 basic principles of breaking skills down, reinforcement and practice. We believe that whatever behavior is reinforced, will increase. If you would like to find out more about ABA and the strategies that come along with it, do check out our free online resource platform where you can sign up for free courses to understand further. You can find the courses here at this link: www.autismmalaysia.com/autismathome/ We hope you will find it helpful!
Hello and thank you for reaching out. Thank you for the video suggestion as well. Please feel free to check out our Autism at Home series (Unit 5: Teaching Speech and Language) where we explore communication strategies for our kiddos. We hope that the series will be helpful in helping your child practice effective communication with you.
Hi Fahmena, thank you for your comment. With behavior management, we would first understand what is the function of the behavior (why is she engaging in that behavior?). Then we will look at 3 areas: preventative, teaching and reactive strategies. 90% of our time should be focused on preventing the behavior from happening and only 10% on reacting to the behavior. When the behavior does happen, we would typically follow these 3 strategies: 1. Extinct: Do not give any eye contact, physical contact, or verbal attention when she engages in that behavior so that she is not reinforced socially for her behaviors. If she is in a dangerous situation, remove her from it without saying anything to a safer place. 2. Redirect: We would bring her attention to a different item/activity that is an appropriate behavior rather than focusing on the inappropriate behavior. 3. Follow through: To be consistent with our expectations and making sure that it is being followed through. Consequences of that behavior should be given consistently across all people in her life. For more information on how to manage behaviors, do check out our Managing Challenging Behavior series here: ua-cam.com/video/gZqV6bf8W58/v-deo.html We hope this helps!
Hello and thank you for reaching out. We would encourage to extinct the behavior by not giving it attention and then redirecting the child to other activities and once the child has calmed down, to prompt the child to communicate appropriately before giving the iPad. It would not be advisable to give the iPad while the child is having the tantrum as it would further reinforce the behavior. If you would like to find out more about managing challenging behaviors, do check out our Managing Challenging Behaviors series here that might be helpful for you: ua-cam.com/video/zMPXW7C7EnM/v-deo.html We hope this is helpful. Have a great day ahead!
Hello, thank you for reaching out. We would encourage you to monitor sounds that your child may produce and encourage it through reinforcement. Once your child starts producing more consistent sounds, we would encourage breaking the skill of speech communication down and you may check out our Speech, Language and Communication series for helpful tips below: ua-cam.com/video/OFLlo61JcVw/v-deo.html In the mean time, we would also encourage teaching your child functional ways he/she can communicate via alternative ways such as the Picture Exchange Communication System as it provides an avenue for him/her to communicate for needs and wants functionally. We hope that this is helpful. If you would like to discuss more specific strategies for your child, do reach out to us at enquiries@autismmalaysia.com and our team will be able to get in touch with you. Thank you.
Hi JayJay, thank you for reaching out. We believe that all children are capable of learning and we can break skills down accordingly to help them learn successfully. If you do have further questions, do send them in to enquiries@autismmalaysia.com and our team would love to get in touch with you to discuss them. Thank you and have a great day!
Hello, thank you for reaching out to us. For kiddos who are non-verbal, we would encourage to teach them how to functionally communicate via the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) or other Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices. The principles would remain the same and we would always reinforce the child for being able to communicate appropriately and functionally. We hope that this is helpful. Do check out our other video series to find out more on how to teach a child with autism, whether verbal or non-verbal in a fun way. Thank you.
