The greatest thing about this is that it's open source. That's why the internet is so awesome and that's why these 3d printers give me hope for the future.
@@deborahbrantley9033 Well I don't think they do RepRap internships anymore but try MakerBot, Stratasys, Anycubic, Creality and any 3D printer company to see if they have internships.
I would love to see what this technology has produced now, the possibilities seem endless for what it can do for our consumer based soceity. i.e. recycling in your own home as things need replacing.
He is very proud of his work, past, present and future, and if you don't cut him off, he would probably go on for days about future projects that they would like to pursue
What a lovely man with an amazing idea and he wants to give it to the world. I want to grow up to be him. In the mean time he has every ounce of my respect and support.
A new paradime is coming, oh we need this and now its here! this guy is almost god to me, bows down on the floor for Dr Adrian Bowyer of the RepRap project.
What a superb man.... why not add a part 2 instead of cutting him off at the end... i dunno some camera operators have no directional skills lol.... next time make it 2 parts and a lot more of Adrian's work... truly inspiring!
Yeah... it's certainly possibly, many companies are already investing heavily in industrial grade 3D printers, it's not a far-fetched idea at all. Honestly, 3D printing is the future of manufacturing.
This was one of the very first videos I ever did! And, correct, I have no directional skills at all! And have never done any editing. But glad to still be able to spread news about good stuff :) I may arrange to meet him again next time I'm in that part of the world... he was very approachable :)
What if you used the rep-rap printer to build 10 mini rep-rap printers with some extra filament that is 10x smaller? Then those 10 mini-printers could build 10 mini-printers and you would have 100 mini-mini printers 100x smaller. Then do it again and again. You could get 1 billion printers at 1 billionth the size, enough to build fabrics or nano-analog computers... You can also do the reverse and build a bigger rep-rap from smaller one until you have one gigantic rep-rap to build foundations to the core of a huge building, then you use the smaller 3D printers to build smaller foundations of the sides. Having enough plastic could be an issue if you want the 3D printers to double exponentially, I wish you could make the rep-rap out of mud, cement, wet sand, snow, or melted sand...
The people of Bath are the best I've met in the world. Vacationed there in 2000 stayed down the street from Pultney Arms. Didn't rent a car, walked through history. The Abbey, Sally Lund, Crescent Circle, Have videos of the bowels of pubs. Hope to go back. Brits in Bath are the best. Long live Britain keep up the inventions. I want a RepRap can I get a parts list for a Mendel? I'm a Carpenter changing fields. I use AutoCad
It already has... This was 10 years ago when this video came out. A lot of people have 3d printers. There are new standards that have come out and it has caught on. I have 5 3d printers and most dentists 3d print out dentures too. There are also different kinds of 3d printers. You are not right.
I think a lot of people are missing the point. I keep reading posts saying it would be cheaper to buy the object, it would cost a lot to make each item, etc, etc....its primary function would be prototyping things. 3D printing vs older methods of prototyping...this would obviously be cheaper and a hell of a lot quicker. Same day you invent, you can have a working prototype.
For now, subtractive manufacturing is advancing as well and is more effective in cost and time in producing things. But 3d printing has a bright future, and 50 years from now the economy will work totally differently.
How totally refreshing to watch, a very creative video like this instead of beer guns and ammo, ( the american Hollywood way) fantastic stuff guys, NICE 1. the subject totally captivates me... Thom in Scotland.
as I say above this was one of the very first videos I ever did! And, correct, I have no directional skills at all! And have never done any editing. But glad to still be able to spread news about good stuff :)
If it was something like a 5 or 6 axis machine.. like a robot arm, which could change tools (it's hand), then it could not only print & mill plastic parts, but once 2 or 3 had been built, it could construct itself from those parts too. Metal powder/ metal clay could be printed/ sintered to make most metal components. Given the logistics, could make 100% and begin mining, constructing chip making environment, solar panels/ power plant. well on it's way to being an independent life form.
@thatkindofguy234 Well i think he said ABS is lego plastic. Imagine a lego but completely solid. And I do believe with the right tweaks you can use many different types of materials.
I was about to ask you to recommend a good value one, but my flip video camera doesn't appear to even have ability to plug an external mic in. Personally I don't think the sound is too bad.
@ramp2tramp a bit late but do you how many that house could cost from now and the factory it self to build big 3D printer and how many resources do it cost...that is question
Dreamers believed the world was round, believed lightning could be harnessed by man, and believed we could go to the moon.... Haters thought the world was flat, that candles were the only way to light your room at night, and believed in a geocentric universe. The fact is that if that little machine can build drinking glasses and sandals... a larger version of it could indeed build houses. Think outside of what you know, my friend... The world is far more amazing than most ppl think.
that was simply due to the fact that at the time 10mins was the longest length of video youtube would accept. Ironically, because this video has been so successful I can no upload much longer videos!
@3goldy feel free to pop down to Bath uni and do that yourself :) I don't edit (yet). I don't have to now either, since I can now upload long videos :)
What a genius item. A machine that makes nearly everything and that can nearly replicate itself out of some crappy milk bottles that would probably just get thrown into the bin. Hay how good would it be if they could develop this technology so that people in the third world could make there own Internet enabled computer.
So bottomline is that you need eletricity, polylactic acid and a 3D printing machine (RepRap) to provide useful hometools/appliances and donate them around the world. I'm no chemist but where or how do we make polylactic acid? What are we waiting for, let's build the world with these awesome machines... for free!
@jammapcb at the time youtube wouldn't let videos last longer than 10 mins, and I personally don't like vids that have to be watched in parts. We did have an interesting chat after this video, but not about RepRap, just about some of his other (slightly more out there) ideas :P (e.g. he thinks genetically engineered humans will ultimatly take over the Earth and therefore the only way to save humans in their current form is to head out to space...)
@visionontv the whole video is perfectly audible, no? Are you listening on headphones? Guess that would make the different volumes a bit more noticeable. Hmz, perhaps I should try to normalise the sound or something. Then again that goes against the whole simplicity of shot, upload, done :)
If instead they try to create 3 in 1 machine that do all 3d printing, cnc machining and pcb printing, percentage of self replicating could be much higher.
Dude! This was 10 years ago. 3d printing has caught on and so many people have them. Companies like snap-maker have already done that and all of this happened a long time ago. You will be surprised how many people have printers and how much dentists, hobbyists, professionals, and more are using them.
@jammapcb You may think the video sucks, I think its great! (although of course there is always lots of room for improvement - but its had many more likes than dislikes. My guess is that your viewpoint is very marginal, although valid nontheless). If you want something done properly, do it yourself, I guess! :P (saying that, if you post me a pro camera I'll happily try to arrange myself another trip down to Bath!)
It's amazing how far these humble beginnings have come

nope
It started in the 80s but we didn't see much of it due to patents

Can you use the 3D printer to make rubber like materials? Something that could be form fitting but have some level of comfort when touching skin?
About 2 years later, how has it improved?
Very good, thank you! May we please see an updated video?
Excellent about milk bottles, how about soda bottles? There is also an abundance of those floating around the roads and highways. Very excellent!

@3goldy p.s: You don't stop at 10 min, you record until you run out of room then edit 10min episodes.
why not. its only the size of the largest component that needs to be catered for.

how tough are the products it makes? say if I was to hit it with a hammer, would it survive?
