I am amazed with all the Asian kids, I would call them ABC American born Chinese. Being a Chinese myself growing up in Hong Kong, we are shy and not open. But this generation growing up in America, get the best out of both cultures… the traditional Chinese and North American cultures. They are not shy, very positive, respectful of one another. It doesn’t seem like a competition to them. They just perform their best, put themselves to the test. Wonderful. We Chinese thanks the Americans nurture so many good Chinese musicians. How I wish China and USA work together, these two nations will be great! 😅
Everyone could benefit adopting the work ethic and discipline displayed by these Asian players. I am in awe of them at every competition! Yunchan Lim from North Korea, for example, who won the Cliburn takes my breath away!
I am in awe of not only the incredible musical talent of these performers but their incredible accomplishments - the top universities, financial consultants, multiple languages, top-notch performances....I'm really amazed which is why I do not nitpick performances "She held the pedal too long...wrong nuance...did not bring out the inner melody...too slow/fast/loud/soft/choppy/smooth".
Angie Zhang, in my opinion, has potencial and I think her mazurkas, has this extra "polish" component that makes this pieces so hard to play right. Hope to see her in Warsaw at XIX Chopin Competition!
To wonderful Asian players - Chopin Mazurkas must have more " nervy" rhythm and more complex, sensitive energy. " Mazurek" is emotionally written with a very thin, precise line. All the best to you
These performers make Chopin sound beautiful. I posted a video on my UA-cam channel about Horowitz's piano. He had the keyboard rigged so the notes went down with almost no pressure applied to them at all. I studied with Horowitz's student, Ivan Davis at the University of Miami. He told me all about Horowitz's piano. Next week I will post a video about why Liszt played at a higher level than everyone else. There are two things missing from the curriculum for teaching virtuosos. This is important information for piano students.
I knew about Horowitz rigging the keyboard. Playing with absolutely flat fingers would be almost impossible to generate such beautiful colours unless he altered the keyboard. Although I adore his playing some notes sounded rather dull, like a voice of someone having a sore throat.
You won't like this! Competitions of this calibre are really somewhat ridiculous, moot and seemingly wasted effort because every musician has the fortitude to exemplary Chopin understanding in accordance to personal taste and perspective. It's like their very own personal musicality opinion via Chopin medium. Why compete over varied musical "opinion" presentation if not to be fostering an inborn ego-maniacle thirst to be regarded as best? All perceptions played ( never displayed) are equal and valid in value because these only represent the highest consummation realizations of each and every performer at these levels. Beethoven would have played Chopin very Beethovenesque. So his interpretations would not be valid?
@jakubolesinski7325 ego-maniacs going at each other in most civil manner doesn't justify whatever the outcome is really all about. Perfectionist's sporting superiority in note delivery VS expressive force is no different than sports. Money prizes are involved which doesn't lubricate intention at all - - so we're led to think. Ha ha, of course I'm teasing you. Yet, they call this a competition and not a symposium discovery. Would these egoist's ( ya can't hide this, only deny) still work effort slave to play readiness for less? Likely so if more recognition is the payoff. Gotta still be the best. Narcissism once again. Truly divine and totality musical oneness experience can only really be the solo by themselves individuality. I trust this remains the higher pursuit with all candidates.
I understand what you mean and in general I agree with you. But here the jury is not merely judging subjectively or personally, completely submerged in their own biases; even I, that have very little experience in piano playing therefore even less in critical listening, can tell when a pianist makes a technical mistake (no matter how small), loses the sense of tempo a little, or whatsoever. It's true that at this stage most pianists play almost perfectly, but some play 'perfectlier' than others. I know that you really have to go and nitpick for the error there, but when some pianists make zero-to-none errors the standard does get very high. Music competitions in general are not (can't be) entirely objective, like an olympic sport is, because there's no truly standardized unit of measurement; but it's also not an entirely subjective matter, otherwise any kid with no music knowledge/experience could be part of the jury. Truth is, when you have knowledge and experience in a certain field (in this case Chopin's biography and music), you will have better ability at judging a performance, the most objectively possible. And that's why you dont have random people in the jury like violinists or lawyers or doctors, rather students of chopin, old players of his music, in general people that know all there is to know in regards to Chopin's piano playing.
@@johnbanach3875 Well the guys above your comment understands my point. What's wrong with you, English professor? You simply a narcissistic criticizer for your own approval's sake? Patience and understanding may be required of you. BTW, it's okay to disagree, but to simply gas light without credence is a cowards response attitude. But it makes you feel superior I bet.

I'm one of the more than one thousand music lovers that benefit from the streaming. Then thank you to US Chopin Piano Competition for it.
I like Angie Zhang, she is so kind. I love the way she say things! Nice soul!
I would hope that the Competition would make the list of finalist readily available. Thank you!
I like William and Angie best.
Hope Angie Z wins! Love her performance ❤

nobody likes competition but everybody does it, this is the way how it works, that is why you have jury from all over the world.

@ Ah, poor little ego hurt. You are insufferably pretentious.
