So my thoughts on this song is that it's really about the US government/Military, ending the Vietnam War, the death of the peace movement and the Iraq war (all of the walls and houses built in the 70's finally fall). Like being a kid and as you grow up your idealism slowly gets replaced (sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling i.e. Americans objection to war). The fear of war is why he wants to have child while he's still young and why he prefers a girl. It's basically about his sadness over the state of the world
Its not literally about a war it's about the rich areas of the town the middle class (aka the suburbs) and the poor and how the rich want nothing to do with the poor because of that the poor hate the rich and the suburbs are the mix and stuck in the middle. something like that i think anyway. I showed my mother this song and she loves this song so much and now the band. that's what she told me it was about.
This song reminds me of the good old days when I was just a kid and had all my old friends I miss them and the old times we had specially with my first crush/ friend.. :/ this song actually makes me tear up..
From watching the video & hearing the lyrics I totally get it ..It's crazy to be in love with a song but I am it literally makes me cry ..I'm super happy & empty hearted @ the same Time....ya know suburbs is where your teen life is & your with your friends growing up & then everything changes o_O love this song
I love this song but to the people that keep saying that the meaning is only one thing music is made for people to relate to it and people are supposed to take the song and give it there own meaning even tho there probably is one meaning behind the song people are suppose to give it there own
first time i listened i loved the jam and searched up lyrics, i spent months trying to understand what the lyrics truly meant, and with current events, i can really understand.
I don't know about the meaning of the song (Probably something similar to 1979 by Pumpkins), but whoever thought of placing that echo guitar at 1:30 is a genius and shouldn't have to ever work again.
