You are absolutely right about the talent shows. Now in Polish tv is another edition of Dancing With the Stars and one woman who completely can’t move and dance is going through even the judges rates her like 7 points- production already announced that she’s supposed by her fans sending texts.
Also notable as being one of the only recorded instances of John Leslie (who rushed the stage to cover her up as her husband hadn't noticed) being nice to a woman.
The thing with Pop Idol: this was early in the days of reality TV; people auditioned in front of the judges with no-one else in the room and no backing track. However, the audience's judgement was borne out as Will Young went on to have 8 top-3 albums and 11 top-10 singles. He did not want Will Young to win and yet the winner got a contract under Simon’s label. Very soon after winning, Will came out as gay against Simon’s advice and he was soon dropped from Simon’s record label but went on to have success on his own instead.

Pop Idol was controversial because nearly everyone thought that Gareth was going to win. Simon desperately wanted him to win (saw £££ for his marketability as someone teen girls would love). Will won, and I think there's a shot of Simon looking a bit pissed off so I don't think there was much producer influence with that result as it would have been Gareth that won if so. Also, during the heats for the show, Will stood up to Simon when Simon criticised his performance, that made Will stand out a lot and I think a lot of people actually then took notice of Will when they hadn't previously (they liked that he wouldn’t just roll over for Simon 😂)
Regarding Julian Clary's joke - the UK was still very homophobic in the early 90s. There were still laws banning government organisations (including schools) from portraying homosexuality as being acceptable.
We needed the time Lesbians invaded the BBC TV studio while Nicholas Whitchell was reading the News - which, of course, is live. I actually saw this while it was happening, and wondered what was going on. It really is a gem.
The Pop Idol moment was on here because Gareth Gates (the one in white) had a sob story - a speech impediment, and was very young. Will Young (in black) was openly gay and stood his corner arguing with Simon Cowell. We were all meamt to vote for Gates but the Young won he had a much more distinctive voice and hes had quite a long career as a singer and actor. Julian Clary's comment was the funniest thing that ever happened on live TV. Still cracks me up. The right wing papers went nuts and he was not on TV for a few years afterwards. Now everyone has calmed down he is a regular on comedy panel shows and has become a bit of a subversive national treasure. He writes novels too. Very talented man.
Cilla was not only a singer, but also huge on TV. She not only had a place in Spain, but also Barbados. She used to hang out with her best friend Cliff Richard when there. He sang Faithful one at her funeral…I remember her saying that she always wanted to marry him, and late in life she said she still did! 😉🇺🇸 Mrs Harry, was always thought of by the British public as a gold digger and she caused all kinds of issues with the Royal family including the Queen especially during her last days on earth.

If you want to watch C-Listers and has-been's eat kangaroo anuses then 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' is the show for you.
Hahahaha - that sounds utterly bizarre, but is, unfortunately, an accurate trailer!
I like the tone of your voice 😂
GMB hasn't recovered since Peirs left
Regarding Julian Clary's joke - the UK was still very homophobic in the early 90s. There were still laws banning government organisations (including schools) from portraying homosexuality as being acceptable.
Seems like it was necessary
Will Young winning Pop Idol only shocked Simon Cowell and Gareth Gates
The fisting gag was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, but sadly it did kill him off for quite a while
No, she was Katey Price. Love your voice btw
Pop Idol came first before American Idol
We needed the time Lesbians invaded the BBC TV studio while Nicholas Whitchell was reading the News - which, of course, is live. I actually saw this while it was happening, and wondered what was going on. It really is a gem.
how is the race row from Big Broter not on the list?
Which one
I loved the slaps
Some of these were more "oh" than shocking...
Mrs Harry, was always thought of by the British public as a gold digger and she caused all kinds of issues with the Royal family including the Queen especially during her last days on earth.
