Great looking fly Matt, Thanks for sharing. I know that some tyers like to moisten their marabou after tying it in to help tame it. Doing that may help with this pattern since the ribbing process looks to be a bit fussy. I don't like sticking my fingers in my mouth so I've always kept a small section of wetted sponge at the tying station and it's proved to be very useful.
I know what you mean Daryl and I actually did wet my fingers on one of the earlier ones I tied and it didn't make any difference in this case. Maybe I was doing it wrong! But yes, excellent tip for working with marabou overall. One thing I have to be careful with though, is when I wet it, even slightly, it can take a big fluffy tuft of marabou and make it look tiny. And then when it dries 30 seconds later, it's huge again! But I guess that's why it's such a cool material. :-)
This is a devastating pattern that I use for salmon, steelhead, and brown trout. I'll also tie this using rabbit or pine squirrel zonkers on top of a chenille body. It just more durable than marabou features. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.
Appreciate it Layton! I just got back from the farm and have the rest of the afternoon to play around at the bench. I need some fresh ideas for Tuesday's tie! :-)
I tie a similar pattern with a few white marabou fibers on top right down the middle. I will change up the white with various other colors. Sometimes I add weight. Great pattern. Thanks for sharing, Matt. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Todd. The recipe for this one didn't call for any weight, but I'm wondering it it might fish better with a little weight. I'd say it might. Thanks for the note!
@@SavageFlies I like the "swimming" motion of a bit of weight toward the eye of the hook. I also tie most of them on keel hooks with the weight at the first bottom bend.
Thanks Matt! I need to tie up a few for my box. Good thing the fly shop is just a few minutes from me. Big list of material to get!!!
Oh man, lucky you to have a fly shop close! But wait... you don't have black marabou?? Get some of that ASAP. I couldn't live without black, white and red marabou. :-)
Leech patterns are great on trout, but after reading the comments, other fish take advantage of this appetizer as well. Will have to add this one to my box for sure. Thank you Matt. Have a good Labor Day.
Appreciate it Mark! And yeah, it sounds like this think could be a killer warmwater pattern as well. :-)
Good morning sir. Looks like a good fly to fish for the up coming salmon and steelhead season. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your holiday weekend.
Happy Labor Day weekend Matt and to your viewers. You may try tying it as an egg sucking leach.
The egg sucking leech was actually right next to this one in Stetzer's book. I may definitely try it soon. Thanks for the note. :-)
Easy peasy. Thanks Matt, I like that you don't do a bunch of real complicated flies. Keep the good stuff coming.
Non-complicated is my middle name Dave! Though every once in a while I like to experiment with the more fancy patterns. :-)
Nice fly! Laughed when read the name and saw the fly.😂 I love black leach patterns for largemouth, they almost always catch fish. I like the ribbing technique, I’m sure it makes it durable, may also try some without it. Someone in comments mentions using zonkers, love them too. A local guide Alvin Dedeaux in Austin ties a Dedeaux Snake. I make a 5”version on 1\0 hook with yellow lead eyes and use black med. Estaz chenille for body and have caught many bass up to 8lbs. I always have one tied to my 8wt rod. Thanks as always Matt! Have a great weekend! 👍👌🎣
Alvin also has a great UA-cam channel, some great demos on tying FW bass and saltwater flies. An entertaining guy to listen to, too.
Appreciate it Charlie; and I love Alvin's channel. If I did more bass fishing I would definitely be tying a lot of his patterns. I might have to try his snake anyway. It just sounds fun. Thanks for the note. :-)
The Don King Leach Streamer. Only in America. Nice looking streamer. Leaches are a popular bait here in Wisconsin. I bet it’s a fish killer? I enjoyed that Matuka technique. Nice job Matt. Enjoyable video. Thank you.
Really nice job on that matuka-style marabou wing. I would not want a closeup camera of me tying that pattern! And nobody would want to hear the audio!
I imagine one reason its an effective pattern is that it eliminates the "scissors effect" of a standard marabou tie, where the hook and body dip down and the wing stays up during the pause in retrieve.
Headed to Vermont and Maine later this month. I should tie some of these up. Thanks Matt!
Pete, it's like I was reading your mind! Someone below asked why it was ribbed, and this was the only thing I could think of. Or maybe it could help keep it from fouling. Vermont and Maine should be a blast this time of year! Have fun. :-)
The matuka technique here probably helps with fouling. So many Maine traditional streamers are tied with marabou or saddles as a wing, these foul like crazy. Nice solution here that I will try on some of my favorite streamers.
I think that's an excellent take on it. I always struggle with fouling feather wings, particularly if they wing is much past the hook bend. It does make me wonder if that's why the creator of this one did it this way. Could very well be!
Note resting looking streamer, I have used that technique on Zonker strips before. Thanks Matt.
Day three of binge watching your channel! I definitely want to try this Don King leech!
You're my hero Barbara! The only other person on here I've seen this excited is Edward Chavez. He's been following for about a year and comments on everything! And emails me pictures of his creations all the time. I love it. :-)
Very nice work Matt.
First time I’ve seen a zonker style technique for marabou. It looks good. Leeches are found just about everywhere, so it should be very effective.
Thanks Bob, and same here. That's kind of why I wanted to tie it... anytime I see a new technique I've never tried, I'm itching to give it a shot. :-)
That is a great looking pattern Matt.nice simple easy tie.thanks buddy!!
Yes indeed Mike. Pretty simple, but looks like it'll be a winner. Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Leeches do well up here. Never tied this one but that’ll change. Thx Matt.
That looks like it will catch fish and easy to tie
Thanks for the video Matt
Nice, simple pattern. I can imagine this would be effective in brown or olive as well for bass on my local ponds.
Thanks for sharing.
No doubt Danny, I think it would work great for warmwater bass. Thanks for watching my friend!
Super pattern will work great at my local still water I think I'll wet it make it a bit easier to tie thanks for sharing matt .
Thanks Justin! I actually tried wetting it on this one, like I usually do when working with marabou... but it didn't help me too much on this one. I mean, it did for tying it on, but when I was done, I ended up with big noticeable gaps where the rib was. I probably just need more practice. :-)
@@SavageFlies thanks Matt I’ll try it without wetting it . I thought you didn’t wet it because it would look better on camera lol
Looks like a Snapple poodle to me. Put a sculpin head on it and you have got a great fly.I wonder how this fly got it's name.Great job Matt.Have a great weekend. Ken
Pretty neat Matt. Had to save that one.
I can see using a mono rib, instead of wire.
Nice
Nice Leach 👍
Hmmm. Never thought of tying wire like that through a marobou. That's pretty cool
Yep, it was a first for me too! It was a little finicky to get it to look right with the wire, but I think in the end it might look more like a leech than a zonker strip or fluttering marabou would. :-)
thanks matt see ya joe
Cool looking pattern. Never seen that sort of matuka style of tying a clump of marabou for a wing. Two leech patterns in that Orvis Index I've told you about ties individual bunches of marabou along the hook, the thread then becomes the body. You did a great job on this one. Say, you tied another fly you said looked like Don King, right? Say hi to Daisy :o)
Ha! But no, this is the only Don King fly I've ever tried. Maybe we should come up with a Mike Tyson fly. Hmmm... maybe call it an Iron Mike. Not sure what that would look like though. :-)
@@SavageFlies Okay, I could have sworn you tied something that you said looked like Don King, you even put up that same photo of him. Either that or I'm in a time warp ;o) Have a great week end.
You’re in a time warp Joe! But this would be an odd thing to have deja vu about. There MUST have been some other tie on UA-cam mentioning good ole Don King. But you know, I have done almost 300 flies on the channel and some I have actually forgotten about. One of the first things I look up when I pick a fly to tie, is to see if anybody has already done a video. I forget which one it was but the other week I was about to tie one and the UA-cam search returned my own video. D’oh!
@@SavageFliesHa, that's a good one. Yeah, must be deja vu all over again, right Mr Berra? I hate being behind the "8" ball, but as they say in the X-Files "the truth is out there". ;o) Thanks Matt.
hi guys bit new too the page love watching and learning if useing zonker would you cut fur of the skin thanks in advance
Luke, welcome my friend! Some people will cut their own zonker strips but most of us just buy them already cut. It's much easier and they're not too expensive.
Gonna tie this with ice dub.
Handsome :-)
It's there a benefit of tying that way instead of having a Marabou wing?
The only thing I can think of Thomas, is that when you just tie the marabou in at the head, when you retrieve this in short pulls, the marabou will flutter away from the body and back again. Kind of a scissor effect. I imagine it might look strange if we're trying to imitate a leech. Doing it this way I think keeps the feather closer to the body during the whole retrieve. (This is just my guess. I'm not 100% sure though.)
Good morning Matt I think it's great looking not the fly Don King
I think you said that backwards Marty. Unless you think Don King is great looking! On the other hand, I'm sure he's a handsome dude. :-)
🤣🤣🤣 The Don King looks just like him! Good morning Matt, enjoy the farm. Let’s get this one going how fun I love leach patterns 👍
Morning Jim! Good weekend at the farm so far. No fishing, but lots of mowing and bush hogging. At least it's not hot up here this weekend. :-)
Hey Matt,
Joyce and I are in North Caroline spending time with our granddaughter.
Hit the pond and got spanked will try in the morning again before breakfast. Hopefully you will do better than I did🤣🤣🤣
