  • I used the Sterilite 200 qt bin, but any 200qt+ bin will work just fine. I also used a box cutter, scissors, zip ties, and chicken wire/ hardware cloth. The whole project took me about an hour and 15 minutes as I did not use power-tools. However, if you choose to use power tools it obviously won't take you nearly as long.
    since this video has been posted i was able to get 1/4 inch hardware mesh to replace the chicken wire that i had to use for the time being in the video!
    Instagram: @cheeriothehammie
    Cost (in CAD):
    Tote: $30
    Mesh: $3
    Zip-Ties: $2.50
    Box Cutter and scissors: I already had them laying around

    Our bins looks identical except the handles on mine are blue and the lid is clear. And for anybody else trying this, heating the knife using boiled water makes crack less likely and makes the cuts easier!

      Ty for the tips I'm planning to make a few this size for my African soft furs. Right now they are in kaytee cages and anyone that knows soft furs knows they well chew out of almost anything. They have the chewing power of a giant regular rat packed in an animal half the size.

    Great build, but is the wire there to keep him in, other animals out or more to allow for light? Consider hamsters have poor eyesight and burrow is more light necessary from thier requirements? The reason I ask, is it okay to have an open top providing the interior of the cage doesn't enable escapism ie nothing is within 6 inches of the opening. I was thinking you could of hinged the top part that you cut and cut out a few square holes say 6x6inches. 🤔 thnks

    • @sarahloulouise
      @sarahloulouise  2 роки тому

      The mesh is there to keep him in, and for ventilation! Even if nothing is within 6 inches of the opening hamsters are truly escape artists and I wouldn't be surprised if they figured out a way out! You can hinge the whole lid if you'd like out of convenience but its important that the lid is meshed over💜

    • @b3tt475

    • @sarahloulouise
      @sarahloulouise  2 роки тому

      The only way people have issues with their ham chewing through the plastic is when there are holes that they can get their teeth into! I suggest 1/4 inch mesh, and yes its enough ventilation! As long as you do the entire top:)

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 2 роки тому

      Any bin 106 quart and larger will suffice satisfying the 450 square inches. The 110 quart bin is just a taller 106 quart bin, but the 120 quart bin is the one and only true giant. I had a 116 quart bin until I was able to get a 120 quart bin. Unfortunately finding a 120 quart bin isn't as easy as finding the others...

    • @sarahloulouise
      @sarahloulouise  3 роки тому

      hamsters are solitary and definitely shouldn't be housed together. Even though some people have success with litter mates being kept together beyond 8 weeks it is not worth the risk of one attacking and possibly killing the other. Please separate them as soon as possible, even if you have to house one in a slightly below minimum cage for a couple days to a week until you are able to move the ham into a properly sized cage.

      @sarahloulouise  3 роки тому +1

      it all depends on personal preference! I'm not able to get a tank large enough where I live so I made a bin cage because him having enough space is way more important to me than having a pre-made cage! If you do go with a fish tank make sure it's at least a 40gallon long breeder so that it is a suitable floor space!

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 2 роки тому

      If you get a aquarium it must be at least a 40 gallon breeder tank. Since they are expensive, granted much nicer, the 200 quart clear bin is much more affordable, and lighter to carry...
