I know why Yuri is so popular : it's because it doesn't even feel he is in the right game. In jrpg, even the most edgy protagonists are soft hearted Heroes. But yuri Can kill , in cold blood , a Bad Guy in secret. And not being traumatised by that. Yuri is littérally the player saying "kill him and stop whining"
The story of the twin knights of the Empire: one was a paragon of justice and purity who sought to improve the lives of the people and the empire better, and the other was a dark shadow that struck down all who would stand in his brother's path. If the law won't deal with them, that's when the Shadow strikes!
sometimes I wonder if we'd be better off with someone like Yuri IRL. I know he is a fictional character, but on a political level, and societal level... sometimes I wonder if America and even other countries would be better off if they had someone who was willing to be a criminal just for the common good.
history is filled with men like Yuri. often, these men are demonized by history and the media. The evils that Yuri committed, he did so knowing what those actions would mean, both for himself, and for the greater society. hero? villain? these labels are ones we ascribe to people based on our personal viewpoints, but the reality is that they are neither, but rather people that did what had to be done
