Hey there Driver. Thanks for taking the time to drop by to catch today's upload. Whether you're a CDN or American driver, what are your thoughts on the state of trucking in your side of the border? Decent all things considered or does it give you a big fat headache when you think about the realities of the industry? Love to hear your thoughts.

My thoughts are this ,we are in a terrible situation now our operating costs are sky high new trucks trailers cost are way over priced shop rates at Kenworth and Peterbilt is over $205 per hr. Tire cost is very high. Fuel is very high plates and insurance keeps going up drivers are having to eat in the truck if they are lucky to have a fridge or cooler truck washes at the beacon keep going up . And this isn't going to end anytime soon!!!! There's going to be more trucking companies going out of business very soon!! My equipment is paid off I'm riding out the storm it's not going to get better until next spring. Unfortunately alot of drivers are not going to make . One of many problems truckers have is they don't know there operating Cost !!! They think they can go buy a truck and make money!! It doesn't work that way!! Take care .

I just drove from Louisiana to Calgary last week, and I only saw one Pilot/Flying J full truck stop along the way on Hwy 3. I was also surprised that there were almost no Canadian or American born drivers. Nothing against immigrants, but are they driving away all the old Canadian drivers?

I see ads for drivers today paying the same rates as when I left 23 years ago.
The biggest problem is the "expense" scam.
How the government let's trucking firms get away with , I don't know.
Sounds good now, but if you get hurt at work, the worker's comp pays penny's.
You go to retire, you get the same cpp as a fry cook at McDonald's, instead of the maximum benefit.

We use a non manned fuel station here at Korean Mafia. There are several around town in Phoenix. One is only about 1 mile, no kidding, from the Legitimate Korean Businessman’s Social Club, Pool Hall, Poker Room, and Message Parlor, where there’s ALWAYS a happy ending! We carry enough fuel to easily make it to LA and back. The card also works at Flying J and Chevron, and Loves, which I used when I had those trips to Las Vegas and etc.

Wow I'm impressed !!! You finally stated some true facts about Canadian trucking!!! Remember your a Canadian bud stay the course I've been trucking since 1979 still going strong!! Remember the fuel sur charges we get helps cover the cost factor in fuel but there is to many trucking companies cutting the rate!!

About a month ago, fuel prices at a particular Love’s in Missouri where I fuel regularly actually got down to $3.08 a gallon. Today, I paid $4.04, almost a buck a gallon more in a month, wow!
    Now it’s $4.29! (2/14/24)

I'm going to respectful disagree on some points with you Dave. I love driving up here in Canada. Sure the amenities for drivers are scarce but you learn to work around it. We always bring our food, water and ground coffee with us enough for a week or so. If we are out longer we hit up a grocery store to re-supply our food. That way we can stop and sleep anywhere by a lake, river, middle of nowhere or directly at the shippers or receivers. Atleast on the west coast of Canada trucking it's still kind of like the wild wild west. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

To me it was just a sign of more things to come. I was running Canada only with my fiance and I had to send her home so I can run the states so we can just make ends meet.
This industry up here needs an overhaul, badly.

Those stats are astounding Dave. And pitiful for the Canadian driver. I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s unjust for your Canadian drivers to be subject to such hardships for so little pay. Trudeau should be ousted from his seat. I’ve run plenty of freight from the US to Canada in my driving career that nobody else wanted to haul. It’s the ultimate waiting game at the border crossings.

I'm planning to live and work on Canada. As a truckdriver from Belgium, driving for 23 years here in Europe I'm sick and tired of doing this here. I want to start all over and learn to enjoy my job as a truckdriver again. I've been to Alberta, Canada 5 times and went with a friend for a couple of times,a few weeks in the truck. Doesn't look so bad to me compared to what we have in Europe. I guess you really have to know what you get into when you go trucking in Canada, and experience it first. I do hope I going to be happy and find my way in life there. I'm for sure looking forward to it.

Even if you account for all the money that people waste on frivolous luxuries today compared to then, there's no way that would be possible today in Canada.

What’s your fuel surcharge look like?? If fuel is that high does your fuel surcharge not keep up with it?? If it’s like here in the states card lock fuel stations are always high that’s why we stay away from them. I absolutely will not take a load going to Canada. The rates are typically not good going in and not much to pick from coming back.

Expecting 13.5 hours a day for worse pay is an outrage. I feel incredibly guilty for complaining about my prior trucking jobs after watching this.

  • @amonducius

Yup, sounds right to me. Trucking in Canada is a farce. Between the low pay, lousy weather, and inexperienced immigrant drivers everywhere, there is no career there. Owner ops get bent over with fuel prices. Company drivers get run into the ground from bean counters trying to squeeze everything they can from you. I gave several years of my life, worked harder than I ever had, was lauded by my employers, and all I got from it was a permanent injury and a middle finger from my employers the second their lousy safety standards cost them money. Oh, that's another thing. If you get hurt at work, expect to have a sore bottom from the insurance company you HAVE to deal with, and no lawyer will touch you because the worker's comp system prevents you from being able to sue 99% of the time. It's just not worth your time and effort to spend over $10k on schooling to work 70 hours a week fighting rough weather to make the same money as a secretary working a 9-5.

I am 65 and have been trucking for almost 50 years. The way the government has changed things, the cost of schooling, (Which by the way the government picked up the tab for me) it is not worth it. The only fix, will be for everyone to stop trying to be one, an when the shortage grows, then perhaps, things will change.

In Alberta it is called the "Oil Sands". The known reserve is bigger than Saudia Arabia's. Unfortunately the bitumen is in sand which has to extracted adding to the cost. Additionally the bitumen is a thick tar like oil which has to be refined more than crude oil which also adds to the cost. Safe driving. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_sands

@@fredbezemer394 You won’t lose your house here in America either. The United States has socialized medicine as well. Over $.90 of every dollar spent in the medical industry is a government dollar. I just turned 65, and I never knew how expensive free medical care was! The reason for high medical costs in the United States, as places with socialized medicine, is the legal system, and not the medical system. In the United States, you can sue a doctor or hospital, or both, for a bazillion dollars, and probably get it! You cannot sue As readily in other countries, or for the absurd amount of money either. A doctor could leave a turd inside of you during a heart operation, and you cannot sue them.
