  • Todays project is tiny luthier thumb plane. I was inspired to build that little tool by one of the best planemakers ever - Olivier Sparks (instagram link below).
At the end of the video i made some test on piece of maple.
    Check the results :)
    Materials:
    Brass pipe
    Steel 3mm thick
Piece of hard wood (who know what it is? Probably african blackwood.. )
    Lamintated plane blade
    Boiled linseed oil
If you have any questions or sugestions just write a comment.
    Enjoy!

Dzisiejszy projekt to mały strug lutniczy.
    Pokost lniany

That, good sir, is a wonderful luthier's thumb plane! I can't be 100% on the wood species because this particular piece resembles multiple species, but I am almost certain that it is quarter-sawn Wenge. At first I thought it might be Black Palm, but that wood tends to have larger sapwood striations running along the grain which would be clearly visible along the face and endgrain. I was able to rule out Bocote, Katalox, Ebony, and African Blackwood due to the particular contrast and coloration of the grain. It is definitely not Acacia as that wood tends to have a lighter burgundy color with a lower hardness and density and more dispersed annual growth rings, and Brazilian Chestnut is also typically a burgundy color with a completely different grain structure. Wenge lumber is very hard, very dense, and very waxy. Quarter-sawn Wenge tends to have the exact grain structure as this piece, the same colors (very dark brown to black with light thin striations along the straight sections of grain), and has a tendency to destroy your woodworking tools due to its incredibly tough heartwood. The only thing that keeps me from being 100% about it as that it is rare to find a piece this wide with such perfectly straight grain! The grain tends to enjoy waving its way around, but I do have a few boards that do have sections with similar straight grain, just not along the full surface! Thank you for yet another wonderful build!

Just a suggestion from a part time luthier. A curved bottom surface is more desirable for these to hollow out violin/mandolin/archtop guitar tops and backs.

Instead I’ll try just to copy him. If I don’t have immediate access to boxwood, what other woods would serve well as the body of my plane? Got a few chunks of cherry. Some Osage orange. Some oak.I’m making a copy of your shoulder plane.

I know this is an old video but the wood looks like Black and White Ebony, I know in the United States a piece that is 2"×2"×12" cost around $50 to $60 depending on dealer, very expensive stuff but absolutely beautiful. This really is a very beautifully built plane, in awe of the skills and craftsmanship

Dear Stavros, another lovely creation. I agree with the other writers on the identity of the wood - it’s Wenge from Africa. It is a very attractive wood and so far I have used it to make tool handles. The patterns in the wood are very attractive.

My guess is that the wood is ipe, which is indeed extremely hard and heavy, and is also used in high-end floor and deck applications. Since there's a tongue on one side like a floorboard would have, that fits.

I'm still planning to make one myself and this video helps me getting closer to my goal. I have made a smaller sized wooden one with a flat rectangular sole which works great.
