Here in Connecticut, there was smoke reducing visibility to 3 miles, making air quality unhealthy for everyone, the aqi is 152, the sun was orange all day, even midday, and when it was setting, you could stare at the sun all you want without damaging your eyes. The sun was a dim red circle as it was about to set and eventually disappeared behind the smoke before it set. The sky was white all day. I miss blue skies. For some reason wildfire smoke blocks blue light causing the sun to turn orange even midday like at sunset.
In case you're curious as to the "for some reason", here's an answer for you. (Disclaimer: I'm not a physicist. It's quite possible there's another, better answer out there). Blue light has a shorter wavelength than Red light, meaning it interacts with more smoke particles as it passes through the atmosphere. Having the longer wavelength allows Red light to hit fewer particles and reach your eyes at a higher rate than the blues, shifting the overall color toward the red end of the spectrum.
The Earth is round and it actually rotates. Anything in the atmosphere gets spread to other areas of the planet. Whether you can see the particulates or not, they're hitting you and all other living things, plants, animals, insects, etc.
Love how they get all worry and we over here in the west coast is something so normal that when we don't see smoke we think something bad is happening 😂🤣🤣🤣
You'll be fine. PNW has been dealing with this nearly every summer for a few years now. A day or two here and there won't give you too many problems. If it starts dragging on for weeks without a decent breeze to push it offshore though, that's a different matter.
