    Great videos on the hydraulic steering! My dad's 2040 4-wheel drive tractor steering column had been getting hot for a while when running, and the steering was taking more effort to turn. The final straw was when it started dumping oil out the top seal. Your advice through the video was a huge help! Turned out that it was the six O-rings and top seal. all but one O-ring was completely destroyed. They took a lot of patience to replace the bottom three, but the top three went fairly fast. Did the replacement with the column still on the tractor, with a long pick in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Tractor has been run for a few hours with no issues, no leaking, column staying cool to the touch, and the steering is one finger smooth like it was when sold back in 1981. Thank you for your helping keep great tractors running and saving us money along the way!

    I've learned a lot from you Bundy Bear and this is a great series I needed to see. Like @youtubeaddict4271 who commented seven months ago I just bought a 1972 300B (backhoe) which is the same tractor as JD1020. He may be inferring that the 1020 has the same steering system as your 1640. Before I start the teardown, I'll ask my JD dealer if the steering systems are identical. After reading the technical manual, I was apprehensive about taking on the job but you have given me the confidence to take it on. I truly appreciate your instruction, humor and encouragement! Thank you!!!

    I just followed your great instructional video on john deer hydraulic power steering rebuild. I’m ready to put it back in. My question is, I have a 1530 that lost all hydraulics. From what I understand is the pump feeds the steering first? I have taken the front pump off in front of the radiator and opened it up. It was clean and looked all good. I first lost steering to the left I believe it’s been awhile in my shop. Then after that bucket was erratic then quit. Shortly after was the 3 point. I have replaced all the filters and the bypass valve appears good. Now I did find somebody had changed the main filter so when I went to change it I found 3/4 of a gasket from and old filter that hadn’t been removed and somehow was working it’s way up into the tractor. I was able to get alot of it with needle nose. Just makes me wonder where the rest went. Anyhow it sat all last summer and most this winter and I just finished the steering column rebuild. I feel good about it. Went smoothly with your video. So the question lol. Would the hydraulic steering cause this? It didn’t leak out the top at all. Some of the main o rings were flattened out though. Also when tractor is running it makes a high pitched whining noise and sounds like it come from where the steering shaft is. That’s why I dug in there first. Sorry for the long question, just want to explain everything I know about it. Thanks Bob

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed Рік тому

      To test if it was the steering causing the problem you can cap the pipe to the steering and see if the tractor problems go away. With the left over gasket possibly some got stuck in the bypass valve but if you clean the screen, change the filter and check the bypass valve you should be well on the way.

    Thanks for the video. This really saved me on my john deere. But as closely I followed the instructions in this video I ended up still having hydraulic fluid leaking from the seal at the base of the column where it flanges up to the tractor. Any idea what my issue might be? I cleaned the old gasket off with a razor blade and some fine sand paper to get it nice and smooth. The only thing I can think of is I didn't use liquid gasket, I only went back with fiber gasket from john deere. And I have gone back and made sure that the bolts are tight. Thanks for any help you can give me. Oh and the long welding rod bent at both ends worked like a champ!

    Thanks for the video, it helps me to see it come apart first. I have a 2130 with 146 loader that has a hydraulic pump chatter and every once in a while after running warm the hydraulic steering and loader controls shudder. Right now I have the rockshaft cover off to reseal the valves but everything looks alright. I did have a stream of oil flowing down from the rockshaft area when looking through the hydraulic fill hole but it turns out it was coming from the SCV valve being in the neutral position; I just found out from the operators manual that the SCV valve(s) needs to be in the forward position when using a loader. I am hoping that the shuddering hydraulics and chatter was from the SCV valve bleeding the oil in neutral. The next thing I am going to do is reseal the steering shaft if the problem continues. Thanks again and I like your vise looks like you built it yourself.

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed 4 роки тому

      Try returning the SCV oil into the filter housing it will help the front pump keep up better. The 50 series has a ported filter bowl available that will fit the earlier tractors.

    • @FarmBossSaws
      @FarmBossSaws 4 роки тому +1

      @@BundyBearsShed The tractor does have the ported filter housing for the loader return. The return oil for the SCV flows into the top right of the rockshaft cover (right beside the SCV) while inspecting through the hydro fill cap i could see a stream of oil from the SCV being in the wrong position. As an update to my rockshaft resealing, when I inspected further the rockshaft piston the gasket was crumbling apart, so I have one of those on order; could be related to the shudder.

    i was watching the video on a jd tractor power steering. I have an early jd300 bachoe. I am impressed with your video on the steering. Great video Lance, I was able to follow along and just replaced the seals with the column still in place on my 2140, reassembled and had no leaks, but the column seemed to heat up, and my overall hydraulic efficiency seemed to decline. What might cause this? Is it possible the 6 inner seals are not properly aligned on the valves and their is some oil slipping by? What do you think might this be?

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed 5 років тому

      G day Daryll, It is possiblr to get them in the wrong place but usually there is a leak almost straight away or steering not working very well. They do get quite warm, listen for your hydraulic pump coupler to get noisy when nothing is being used and for the coupler noise to go away when a hydraulic function is being used. If it makes a noise not much is wrong.

    Just doing this for the 3rd time with the steering column. Everything is the same as yours but on top of the column is a threaded piece which is part of the column and is a couple of inches long. The threaded part under the wheel which threads into the column is the same as yours but this one has a secondary piece that threads into the column with a small length of threaded pipe in it with another o-ring. The best way to remove this is with a pipe wrench only discovering this after fabricating a tool to remove it internally with two protrusions which catch on the inner threaded part. Would have been much easier to use a pipe wrench. I painted it yellow to differentiate it from the rest of the column.

    • @BundyBearsShed

      The free play is adjusted with the shims on the valve bodies, there has to be some free movement as when you look at the steering wheel it will rise and lower a little to work the valves. If your steering is very sloppy it is probably not in the column but the bolt on the pitman arm can come loose and the bell crank under the radiator gets sloppy.

    Hey Bundy greatings from Germany, first thinks first...thanks for the video so grateful for. Now that i saw your video i rebuild my power steering because it was leaking on top of the housing since years no one could tell me whats wrong. immediately i noticed in your video there are two different valves as you mentioned t ( 3 and 1 holes). I reassembled all and everything is fine now, but there is still one thing if im driving or running the tractor and stearing left/right and then to the opposite there is a "deadzone" when turning the steering wheel where nothing happens , is there a correlation between the valves and the thin chims or is that another problem? Maybe you have an advice for me.

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed 3 роки тому +1

      The dead spot is in these but to get it to be minimal the shims on the valves can be removed to set it correctly. If you get it too tight you will be chasing the steering as either the top or bottom valve will be open, so you want the both valves to shut but have very little slop.

    • @LaFleur785
      @LaFleur785 3 роки тому

      @@BundyBearsShed oh thank you very much for the help, problem is mostly gone now. At the first time i though i have to put more shims in to get more resistence to steering. Now if i steering left or right the dead spot is smaller but there is a sound i am not familar with, it sounds like a valve is jumping into the right place but i think thats not possible.

Thank you so much for this 3 part series. I've got a 2020 with that steering column on it, and it's drooling out under the steering wheel. I made some notes and bookmarked this video, and am going to dive into it when I have the parts in hand. Looks really simple the way you explained it. To do it 'in-frame', just pull the top nut off and screw the top shaft with the valves off, then replace the six o-rings inside and whatever else I can get to, right?
    Thanks again for your clear, well-made video.

      @@BundyBearsShed Turns out not that exact steering column. The shaft doesn't separate into two different parts, in other words it doesn't unscrew all the way. On top of that, the end under the wheel looks nothing like what you took apart there. I think I have an earlier version, maybe? There are two C clips on the top end of the stack of valves, and a shoulder at the bottom of the stack, no C clip. When I removed the valves, the whole shootin' match slid out the bottom (larger) hole. The valves have the o-rings in them (except for the one that came out in pieces that indicated to me I'm on the right track with what my problem is!) and the cast housing has rough recesses with machined shoulders that appear to line up with where those o-rings would ride. I've been going crazy looking for ANYTHING on the internet that looks like my setup, and the only thing I can find is that there's a serial number break somewhere around 40k and mine's 26817. Possible I have open-center steering on this tractor? Heck, it's possible it's not even a 2020 LMAO, just has a 2020's hood on it! If you have the time and inclination, drop me an email and I'll send you some pics of what I see that's different with mine, maybe you can point me to where to find a kit for it.
      Just occurred to me, it could be that this is a column/valve off of a different tractor that physically fit on this one, but was never 'officially' used on a 2020. Possible?
