  • A gyrfalcon hunting sage grouse in the wyoming desert. The entire video was shot in slo-motion to get the best effect. Sorry no sound.

Videos of a gyrfalcon flying don't do it enough justice. The first time I saw one was at a falconry show, I was so captivated by the way he flew that I completely fell in love with gyrfalcons and falconry in general, I'm considering taking a course in it.

Breath taking video! Great job. So often it seems with the popular videos that the Falcon is unchallenged and unstressed it its hunts. This show just how athletic and how hard these birds work, on both sides. Without its partner the trained dog re-flushing the grouse, after a brilliant chase, it would have been up to the wild.

One dislike from the anti. This is a great video, showing the hunting skills of a huge Gyrfalcon. The footage was fantastic. Plz keep uploading these flights.

Ground predators , from rats upwards, along with crows, harriers etc. kill far more grouse by taking the eggs and young chicks in the nesting season than falcons ever do by predating on adult birds.
Sadly this includes many looses to dogs allowed to run loose at this time of year by people out walking who consider themselves to be animal lovers, & don’t realise that when Rover stops for an sniff at the heather that he’s having a quick snack of a clutch of grouse eggs.
The falcon is just doing what falcons naturally do, this is a very low level of predation & completely sustainable.

COOL ....I would like to see it filmed with a higher magnification level, cause I cant really see the birds too good that far away.....it is a good vid because it shows how it feels to be in the field with the falcon hunting.....but , the birds are so far away from the camera, it needs to be a higher mag level...GREAT JOB I hope to see some more vids from you...thanks for posting this....

it is like watching a handler send a pittbul terrier against a springer spaniel for fun.

Derek Hogan except gryfalcons hunt these things already and are bred for this sort of thing, so it probably happens in the wild without a humans help. Wah wah wah.

Derek Hogan I'm sorry if falconry upsets you. It isn't for everyone. However, any bird of prey would hunt and kill another bird if it got the chance. The handler isn't really making the gyrfalcon kill for fun, he's doing it because this is what they would do even if they weren't 'domesticated' (I use that term loosely). If he didn't teach them how to hunt, and allow them to, then they would starve to death. Between letting a 'domesticated' falcon do what it was designed to do or letting it sit around eating cheap meat that only god knows where it's been and what's in it, I'd choose letting it hunt and kill one bird that could last it at least the day and maybe even some of the next day as well. Nobody enjoys killing animals, but sometimes it's just something that needs to be done.

Well said Dragon. Plus the falcon don't catch every time. Think of it like this. He is hunting a falcon for a few hours a day against a wild animal that gets chased by other hawks and falcons from the wild. I would say the trained falcon has the disadvantage here. That's why the falconer tries to set it up for best results using a pointer. If the falcon is out of position when the flush happens it most likely don't catch. Might want to do some research before sounding like a fool in public again.
