In Mindanao, School for Indigenous Tribes Continues Amid Threats

- The Manobo tribe, who are mostly situated on the mountainous areas of northern Mindanao in the Philippines, have struggled to defend their ancestral lands from mining companies. Like the rest of indigenous people, they blame the lack of education for signing contracts that yielded their lands in exchange of canned goods and dried fish.
Educating the lumads (indigenous people) for free to help emancipate them from discrimination and thrive for their right of self determination, the Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural Development (ALCADEV), was established near their communities.
In this video, the ALCADEV in Lianga, Surigao del Sur, celebrates its 13th anniversary of its foundation day, amid episodes of evacuations due to bombings and killings of their leaders. A teacher, a student and his mother express their worries about President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement to bomb all lumad schools due to allegations that they are teaching subversives. The ALCADEV’s executive director, a chairman of farmers group, and a chieftain were killed on Sept. 1, 2015 that threatened the whole community. Despite the incident, classes and the students’ “farm time” continue, as the lumads are determined to achieve their development through education.
I never knew this was happening. I might have been busy with other things but my heart deeply sank when I realized that while I go to school and rest at home comfortably, our Indigenous People are suffering.
I pray to God that this injustice will stop and that the peace and rights our brothers and sisters rightfully deserve will be given to them.

Kong sasabihin nila Ingigenous people (IP) ano na ang tawag ng Lumad na Bisaya na walang wala no red no write di ba INDIGENOUS PEOPLE din sila hindi sila membro sa tribu ang mga manobo na wala ma imployensya ng NPA ayaw nila na Lumad ang gusto nila tawagin sila na manobo o tribu.
