Pro tip, if you doing any sort of challenge run, just do main quest until you reach Strip and do most quests on your way besides searchlight incase you find it.
Legit Vanilla NV even with hardcore and very hard difficulty is still too easy.
You get alot of food and water from just looting places or occasionally stealing from npcs. I mean if u do sunny smiles tutorial quest u literally find goodsprings water source u can always teleport too for water. Tons of places with geckos to farm for meat aka food and it doesnt take much survival skill to grill their meat. If you REALLY dont want to do it, farm scorpions instead for their stingers to give to Ruby Nash for free filling meal. Thought scorpions are tougher then geckos the blue ones I mean.
Sleep is even eaasier to fill, but Ig occasional atomic cocktail found somewhere can do its thing or craft coffee which is easy.
The survival components were definitely less punishing than I expected. I didn't know about the water source in good springs, but even without that, I had minor dehydration at the worst. Overall it was a fun way to spend a weekend!

People always says how NV hardcore is quite easy, but that's really just the case if you know all the tricks and optimal strategies. So yeah, if you grab Chance's knife at the start and rush This Machine then it's easy, but if you do the same thing blind with just the straight razor then it's a whole different story.
I didn't notice the food/water being an issue in hardcore, but tbh the very hard difficulty was actually tougher than I expected
Or maybe don’t go with a melee build, skip all the main quests, and rush Vegas at level 1 it would be a lot easier
Honestly hardcore just feels like minor inconvenience mode

There are some VERY nice Hardcore overhaul mods in the community that truly take the challenge to a new level and still stay very "lore friendly".
Try them out sometime! I recomend the "JSawyer Mod", it was made by lead New Vegas director Josh Sawyer himself, as a "Director's Cut" of sorts. There's also the "JSawyer Ultimate" version that incorporates previously cut content into the core experience. Fantastic stuff.
Definitely wish I could use it but I'm on Xbox. Very Hard Hardcore is very easy

Wait. People DIDNT play hardcore? This is how I always play. It's not really hard. Just learn how to purify water, get the perk that takes all items that weigh 2 pounds are halved and learn how to sharp shoot and use explosives.

@@Ssjgeek you need 5 dirty water and some medical tubing. Go to a fire place (you need something in survival) and look for Mass Purified Water.

@@Ssjgeek have I think 50 or something in survival, you will need two glass pitchers and some surgical tubing. Go to a fire pit with at least 5 dirty water. Select MASS PURIFIED WATER and there you go. Turns dirty water into purified water.
Yeah like legit I ran Hardcore on Very Hard. Got the explorer achievement without the perk. It was pretty goddamn easy. Granted a lot of reloads but less about my deaths but my companions, fucking legion assassins... Overall it was an extremely smooth and quite fun experience

If "Very Hard" diff works the same in NV as it does in F3, it's basically just triples (or doubles?) the enemy HP. There's no reason to play on VHard, even if you're doing hardcore.
I just wanted to try it to see how the challenge was, and it turns out it wasn't that bad haha

A few tips if anyone has not done it yet and just planning to get it out if the way rather than trying to play a lot with it. If you set the game difficulty to very easy before starting a new save game and once you apply hardcore mode the very easy difficulty is on too. Take the shortcut through black mountain to get ncr uniform and onto the strip through camp mccaran. Discover hidden valley early on because doing the yes man ending is the quickest and to speed it up get veronica so you can leave as soon as entering. Once you meet the other factions, skip the presidential assassination mission and you are pretty much done and make sure speech stat is maxed. If you go to the lucky 38 lobby its a good place to grab good value items such as booze, cigarettes, and pre war money which you can sell in freeside and new vegas medical clinic for food/water and medicine.

Melee build, max out speech right away and now you can bypass the final battles of the game. Use survival skill to get food from geckos easy. Fast travel to Good springs source for free water and a bed nearby.

not the rarest achievement, "Pros Only" for completing 3 3-star Gun Runner's Arsenal challenges(such as using starter weapons to kill 5 adult deathclaws) only has 1.7% of Fallout New Vegas owners completing it on steam(PC)

I find crafting ammo, meds, repair kits and more make survival very manageable.

I'm honestly surprised to know that so few people have this achievement. It is not hard to get at all, as long as you focus on Survival, Medicine and Repair and play smart.
It wasn't as bad as I expected, and I put it off for so long lmao. I also did none of the things you suggested lmao. The very hard difficulty was the kick in the nuts lmao

I did two Hardcore runs, the first one to try to make the game harder (it doesn't, you just start doing tons of boring micromanaging IMHO) and a second one to get the achievement (because I disabled Hardcore on that first run)

its actually the GRA three star challenges achievement
but when I saw them have ones like "kill a deathclaw with a .22 pistol" i was like "nah man, im good"
but for real though, I'm also currently on a very hard/hardcore run. just finished the dead money dlc and it really got me questioning my life choices
I finished all the DLC achievements in 2012, so I don't remember them too well. There was a dynamite one that involved death claws, and that was so annoying lmao
I will say, hardcore on very hard is some goofy fun. Great way to spend a weekend. But I'd avoid the Sierra Madre on that difficulty 😂
Fr. Hardcore was relatively easy. Going for GRA challenges is much more huge deal.

@@morgansbasement and so I though when first heard of em! Iirc 1 and 2 star challenges are quite bearable but 3 star challenges might be even impossible at some stages of the game. As far as I am aware one involves killing MrHouse with 9 iron, which is one of the easiest tbh but it is the one easy to miss too.
P.s. I am sure you could "cheat" on some of those challenges like the ones that require you to kill creature with specific item. Like you could use a normal weapon to make it's hp drained and then use the required one.
One day I'll try for those achievements but currently I have paid most of my time for modded FNV (Tales of two Wastelands + tons of mods)

Yeah playing hardcore me and my pops went through it with almost no issues. The most annoying part is your companions dieing and if you don't have a save they are gone.( and your limbs break so often )
I'm NGL I completely forgot you could even have companions until you mentioned it right now LOL. I also didn't even know they had permadeath TBH

During my first playthrough I was able to pass the defenses of Boomers. It was mere lucky.

imo, the easiest and quickest way to get to vegas is the pass at black mountain with the boulder and beartraps

@@morgansbasement alright so you're gonna wanna go to black mountain which is east of quarry junction. You follow the road up the mountain until you see a dead NCR trooper with a trail of blood. There is a couple beartraps on the pass beyond the dead trooper and when moving up the pass an easily avoidable boulder will roll down. this will lead to the Repconn HQ and new vegas and yada yada. basically just a shortcut to the northern part of the map
Very hard and hardcore mode is the only way to get much of a challenge out of new vegas. Any other way is just cheesing your way through it
I normally like hoarding ammo, and just RPing, so I'm fine with just chilling normally and not worrying about dying every fight (in Fallout games haha)
Not many problems that can't be solved with Annabelle and 100 missiles or 25 fatmen. 50 caliber ammo can add up fast too
Even then it's still pretty easy
This difficulty is only really punishing at the beginning of the game when your broke, I recommend having at 6-9 (lol) luck taking the black mountain route to new Vegas n ply black Jack tell your filthy rich makes it a little bit easier earlier on also hit nepten asap n get “that gun” u can steal it for free. with a high luck it’s honestly lowkey one of the best guns n the game

That was the exact reason I made this video haha. I needed a reason to get it. It should only take a weekend to do, so I recommend just ripping it if you have some down time
As someone who did this as well for the achievement def woulda been nice to have this but I also had hundreds of hours already so it was easier for me and also the vault 13 canteen bearly does anything i still had to drink a lot myself
I've never played on hardcore, so I wasn't sure if the canteen was op or not. Considering that water wasn't that much of an issue, I could've kept it and it would've been the same outcome haha
@@morgansbasement yeah no worries not like saying it was dumb to do or anything I just was letting you know cause the only time I ever needed water was when waiting for vendors or going through a bigger dungeon and still I forgot I had it half the time I think the sip is equivalent to 1 purified water so it’s not super useful in hardcore

I thought Hard core was the hardest difficulty. I've been trying to beat the game by doing a glitch where I keep doing a speeh check and getting not only XP , but also free 9mm rounds and armor. Then selling that stuff for caps. Since I'm already a high level and have my speech at 100. I just need to run though the final area and do a speech check with the boss to avoid fighting him.
Past day or 2 when i try to play this game it just sits on the loading screen, makes me sad

so ive come to find out on my playtrough this week where i played very hard /hardcore and let me tell you... the dlc in this mode is very fn difficult. first off i cant even kill a death claw with max crits/anti material/and explosive ammo the difficulty makes alien blaster look like a fn pea shooter...

i played this game so godamn much on ps3 the only difficulty for me is hardcore very hard
I never played on anything higher than normal before 2 weeks ago haha. I liked hardcore mode, but very hard felt so silly early on. It's so over tuned in the early game (for my enjoyment). Like I can't imagine doing a completionist run on that mode, you'd have to get op and then go back and do all the quests

I know it's made by Obsidian, but since all the Fallout/Elder Scrolls games are similar, I was referring to not letting big hills or hard enemies stop you from following the shortest path between 2 locations haha

Fallout NV hardcore mode is super easy
The hardcore part wasn't bad, but the very hard difficulty was super trial and error haha. Of all the achievements in fallout, this one is the hardest imo. Most are simple
This is the easiest challenge ever If you actually wanted to make it hard no fast travel. Or play fallout dust mod
I wanted to get the achievement on the hardest difficulty haha, not being able to fast travel would add alot of down time
