I don''t know if you got the answer to your question... but as a volunteer firefighter I have experienced what we call rekindles.... the fire in the low spots or the holes from where the original fires were had hot embers smolders in the base. i.e. the rekindle. it happens pretty regular where I am from.

@@grasslandsacreage2116 Reminds me of the coal mines around Centralia, PA that were accidentally set on fire, apparently due to burning trash. The coal seams have been smoldering for a good 50 years, and who knows how much longer the place will burn.
