I am managing to play this on my handheld... I use the dpad for the up and down... The buttons for the diagonal direction. Triggers for whips and teleport. As a kid I was in love with this game
Zack Johnson, the creator of the RPGs West of Loathing and Kingdom of Loathing, took a crack at the Kroz format in a gamer jam, producing the game, The Encroaching Gloom. I had a bit of fun going for a high score there.
College memories coming in... late at night, probably around 03:00 AM, me still awake and waiting for some article to copyedit for the student newspaper. And playing Kroz because I was bored out of my mind. My roommate was also awake, coding (he was a computer science guy).
+Sang K Oh yeah, I ran out of whips all the time as a kid too, but that's because I didn't understand the concept of "whip management" (a phrase you'll never hear outside of context for this game) where you have to consider how many whips used equates to how many whips back, as some things are just not worth going for due to the whips it would take. :P
Long ago, this (I've no idea which one) always looked like the most abstract, enigmatic, esoteric game when I used to watch my older brother play it - I had know idea how he knew what was going on. Rouge I could understand; turn based, usually less chaotic, and it tells you C is for Centaur, T is for Troll (Oh shit). But I've got the lot all set up now, someday soon I'll figure this out - looks fun.
The term "bottomless pit" drives me bananas. A pit has to have a bottom. Otherwise it's just a hole. Like a donut doesn't have a pit in the middle. It has a hole. I know this is entirely irrelevant but it's just something I realized a long time ago and it bothers me
About the game "looking about as good as an ASCII game can look". I thought you could define your own alternate ASCII characters in the program you were running. Like the early Ultima games.
Disthron You could, if you had an EGA adaptor. INT 10H, service 11H gave you the ability to change the masks for the character set. But Kroz was expected to run on computers that had only CGA.
Already have! You may wanna use the alphabetical list on my website if you're wanting to look up specific games I've covered! www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html
Could someone make more detailed explanation about the issues why shouldn't I play the early original games? Also why the order of caverns, dungeons and kingdom of kroz?
Yep, there was also a mzx file in there called HOVER.MZX and it's extremely similar to another old DOS game I played a long time ago called Islands of Danger, was it inspired by that game?
+MeatBeat Yup! Hoping to cover Islands of Danger someday, I just keep forgetting about it, let alone if it's still possible to obtain the registered version. :B
@@jacobthesitton9142 Late reply. But I recently discovered megazeux. and am interested in Kroz. Is your kroz clone in DMZX? Can you share the same if you don't mind
My Dad and I were addicted to this game!!
Thank you for your well researched, informative (and technical) videos ! Been watching them for nearly 10 years.

Excellent review. Kingdom of Kroz (I) was the first Kroz games I played way back in the day.

It took me 5 years to realize KROZ backwards is ZORK
Wtf how did i not notice that
Sounds like "Chase" (a.k.a Daleks, Robots, or Escape) was an influence here.

We really should just be calling them "Deathchutes" ;)
Kinda reminds me of "The Amazing Adventures of ANSI Dude".
I love that game!

Disthron I meant within the limitations of not altering the ASCII character table at all. ;)
Ah, fair enough. ^_^

Are you doing to do an episode about ZZT? 😝

I improved your Kroz clone for megazeux that lacked sound and some features. ;)
+MeatBeat Cool. All that stuff in that stockpile I released when I left the MZX community didn't go completely to waste after all! ;D

I'll start doing DOS related videos on my channel as well, but everything will be unemulated.
