  • The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is an annual event held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in Trinidad and Tobago. This event is well known for participants' colorful costumes and exuberant celebrations. There are numerous cultural events such as "band launch fetes" running in the lead up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is said that if the islanders are not celebrating it, then they are preparing for it, while reminiscing about the past year's festival. Traditionally, the festival is associated with calypso music, with its origins formulated in the midst of hardship for enslaved West and Central Africans; however, recently Soca music has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes (sometimes called "mas"), stick-fighting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival.

@doreenramsey1016 I ent stealing nobody's thunder if this what you say is facts, then why is it the world ent flocking to your Island when it's your festival? From childhood we are taught of carnival in our schools, we learn wire bending costume decorating, learning to walk on stilts, and steelpan, in schools. It's in our DNA as Trinis, its our birthright, its the thing that spins our economic wheel, we always happily welcome visitors with open arms to "the greatest show on earth" ❤

. I was recently reading about the overly extravagant and ostentatious lifestlye spending enormous amount of money all over the world while spending on material things while most of the people in that country are living in poverty.
If true, what a shame and disgrace. Time to wake up Africa and African diaspora on what our priorities should be. We cannot love each other, our country fellows and lands if we do not love ourselves. If we did, noone would sell out to our enemies for money and favors.

@@thetruthhasSetmefree16 Exactly!! Its actually the presidents son. Imagine bringing up about him attending carnival while he has plundered Equatorial Guinea where the bulk of the population lives on less than $2 a day. Most people in that country don't even have clean drinking water while he flaunts his excesses on IG. Then had the audacity to press the world for more financial aid, while he was in a 75,000 US a night hotel.
Should be barred from entering Trinidad. . He is a piece of trash and I hope someday he gets punishment for what he's done.

In times gone by , the spectackle of carnival was greater , the bands used to be so big and thick , there were people on the stage from end to end , and across .
I remember ,there used to be bands with a majority of white people. Some bands were so big ,they took a while to cross the stage . If African Tigress witnessed carnival in those days , she would of been more amazed than she is now .
With the bigness of the bands and the colourfulness of the costumes the sight used to be really pretty and spectacular .
I really don't know the reason why , but for some time now , the bands have gotten smaller.
Trinidad carnival is not what it used to be . Not saying it isn't still great , but in times gone ,the stands were full of spectators and more people in the bands .

Thank you. I am proud of you, Aftican Tigress. You made sure you got the history and other valid information in your videos. You represented Africa and the Caribbean African diaspora very well. Thank you. As organizrd as it seems, it was much more organized some years ago when entering the stage. They did not need that group of security to have order. The people had great respect for the band leader, the costume makers, each other, the hard work and hours that went into making more elaborate and creative costumes so that when it was time to display on the stage and get their labor and money spent judged, they were diligent in following all the rules and noone without costumes could enter the band on the stage and sometimes from the time they came in the Savannah, they were already organized so all you saw on the stage was a beautiful band of colors flaming/glowing by the rays of the sun and costumes that took your breath away in orderly sections moving/flowing flawlessly, orderly and timely on the stage. It was then easier to understand what each section represented. Then when they got off the stage, then sections could mix up although most stayed orderly until they came out of the Savannah and go into the streets.
Having fun and a great time was also central. But now it seems more about just fun for the masqueraders with less emphasis on telling and showing a story of a theme with a purpose of also educating and arousing the imagination with its super creativity and ingenuity of the costumes representing the theme. It was magical and a true wonder of the world. The designers of those days needed a global award for creativity and ingenuity. Blessings, peace and love.

On the continental African representations, I don't know about SA, but I know that a large contingent of Nigerians and Ghanaians live in T&T, so the representation you saw likely derived from those.
Lastly, I suspect that you will get to really enjoy the festival during your editing, because I doubt you were able to take it in fully in while you were busy capturing the video for us. Really great editing on your part.👏👏👏

A lot of Nigerians and Ghanaians who live in the US also travel to Trinidad for carnival. Y'all underestimate how carnivals in the US promotes Trinidad carnival to the world.

@@Travel_plus_adventure We are mixing 2 things up here:
      1. There are 2 Original Carnivals in the world: The Trinidad and Brazilian Rio Carnivals. Both are well known all around the world and it is on to do list of many people around the world. The fist thing about Trinidad known to the world is The Carnival. It is the largest Caribbean Carnival by far - I think every Carribbean country has a carnival, but they are only copies of the ORIGINAL in Trinidad, apologies to nationals of those countries.
Outside of the Carribean, the largest Carribbean festival is the *Toronto Caribana.* Carribeans and Africans residents in US, as well Afircan -Americans attend *Caribana* yearly in droves, possibly constituting about 50% of Carnival participants in Toronto. Just trying to tell you stylishly that the US is not known for Carribbean Carnivals as such, despite Miami's and some modest festivals in a few US cities. After the *Toronto Caribana,* next largest Festival is: the London *Notting Hill Carnival* started in 1966. The *Japanese Caribbean Carnival* has been gradually building up for years too.
There must be about 100 *Caribbean Carnivals* around the world, but most tourists and participants to those Festivals always desire to see the *The Trinidad Original,* hence the yearly pilgrimage to Trinidad - nothing to do with whatever is happening in the US. Interestingly, the Festivals copied around the world is actually the Trinidad Carnival rather than the Brazillian Rio Carnival, with a few exceptions. In Lagos Nigeria, my hometown, the mini carnivals there (at Easter and Christmas seasons), called *Fanti* derived from Brazilian Slave Returnees.

@@Travel_plus_adventure 2. We have to distinguish Carnival participants from tourist spectators. What I meant was the Nigerian and Ghanaian delegations in the parade shown by African Tigress are likely African residents in T&T, because there is a sizable Ghanaians and Nigerians living in T&T. That would be different from Ghanaians and Nigerians resident in the US who come to the festivals as tourists. Most of those will likely participate in the pre and post-parade events and parties, but will watch the actual parade as spectators.

You even seem to disassociate carnival with slavery. If you are going to tell our story and culture be true warts and all. We Caribbeans are a proud people and not ashamed of our past.

Lynn, I look forward to hearing your commentary after leaving a country or an event. I appreciate your perspective. Always well thought out. As an older Caribbean woman, I'm glad that women feel and are free to show off their bodies in these scanty costumes. My concern is that it may unwittingly be leading to the continued objectification of women. Men are covered up compared to the women. Also, the simulation of sexual acts referred to as dancing doesn't appeal to me. But for those who love it, i judge you not.

I hear you, Ms Capstone. Older Caribbean man here, too, though not Trini. I hold a conservative bent myself re behaviour and deportment in public, but you have to balance that with a place's culture and history. Bear in mind that African dances evolved from simulating sexual acts. In the end, Trini carnival culture is essentially an outgrowth of that, hence...
