  • One day in Rostock! 🇩🇪
Rostock is the largest city in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and lies in the Mecklenburgian part of the state, close to the border with Pomerania. With around 208,000 inhabitants, it is the third-largest city on the German Baltic coast after Kiel and Lübeck, the eighth-largest city in the area of former East Germany, as well as the 39th-largest city of Germany. Rostock was the largest coastal and most important port city in East Germany. The city has a large population of herring gulls that squawk loudly most days throughout the year.
What to see in one day in Rostock?
•The Ständehaus Rostock is the former parliament building of the Mecklenburg estates, the representatives of knighthood and the countryside.
•The stone gate in its current form is a gate built between 1574 and 1577 in the Renaissance architectural style in the south of Rostock's historic city fortifications. It replaced the older gate that was demolished in 1566. In addition to the Kröpeliner Tor, the Petritor and the Mühlentor, the Steintor was one of the four main gates of the city of Rostock.
•The historic town hall building is located on the Neuer Markt in Rostock and was originally a group of three houses, the construction of which dates back to the 13th century. It is the oldest preserved secular building in the city and is considered - like the Lübeck town hall and the Stralsund town hall - to be one of the most important secular brick Gothic buildings in the Baltic region.
•St. Mary's Church, Rostock, in German Marienkirche, is the biggest of three town churches found in the Hanseatic city of Rostock, in northern Germany. The other two are St. Peter's (Petrikirche) and St. Nicholas (Nikolaikirche). A fourth, St. James' (Jakobikirche), was heavily damaged during the Second World War and subsequently demolished. St. Mary's was designated in 1265 as the main parish church. Since the Protestant Reformation in 1531, it houses a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran State Church of Mecklenburg.
•The Kröpelin Gate, the westernmost of the four large gates of Rostock's city fortifications, was built around 1270 in the Gothic style. Even back then it was very large with its two floors and remained one of the largest of the city gates, which at times numbered up to 22. Whether it was named after the small town of Kröpelin, towards which it leads, or after a patrician family of the same name is still controversial today. It represents the western end of Kröpeliner Straße.
•The University of Rostock is a public university located in Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Founded in 1419, it is the third-oldest university in Germany. It is the oldest university in continental northern Europe and the Baltic Sea area, and 8th oldest in Central Europe. It was the 5th university established in the Holy Roman Empire.
•Warnemünde is a seaside resort and a district of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg, Germany. It is located on the Baltic Sea and, as the name implies, at the estuary of the river Warnow. Warnemünde is one of the world's busiest cruise ports.
•Warnemünde Church is a neogothic building in Warnemünde, which is a part of the hanseatic city of Rostock. Construction of the current brick building began in 1866 and the church was consecrated in 1871. The church of Warnemünde stands for over one hundred years in the middle of the town and is the center of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation. For the community along with many guests it is a place of rest and prayer. But it has also even given protection from flooding. The maritime atmosphere is shown by the special votive ships inside.
