In the second of our on-the-road videos celebrating the life and amazing talent of Gilles Villeneuve, we visit Erbe, Italy, 8km from the birthplace of Tazio Nuvolari and also the site of a stunning Gilles Villeneuve memorial. The marching band plays on; Gilles' Ferrari T4 sounds gorgeous; and we talk to Mauro Forghieri, Joanne and Melanie Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux. This video, originally filmed in 2012, when the F1 world paid its respects to Gilles 30 years on from his passing, has been re-edited and re-mixed.
With thanks to Jonathan Giacobazzi, Nigel Roebuck and Diego Merino.

I love Arnoux, an honourable, fair and super talented racer with great humanity...if only he was Gilles’ teammate at Ferrari in 1982.

Gilles was unique. And Rene Arnoux: 7 victories - 18 poles - 12 lap records. Those are numbers of a F1 champion.

So nice to hear Arnoux's view on this.

I appreciate the manner in which the older generation speaks (referring here to Mauro Forghieri), the smile, the constant eye contact, the still head movements, the pleasant disposition, making for a genuine delivery. I wish for my generation the GenX, and future generations recognize this and inherits this, somehow. Godspeed.

Absolutely. Unfortunately social media is diminishing the simple art of speak.

Gilles was not the typical driver in f1, he drove always to the max, always with his heart, sometimes not with his head when he really needed too. But the fans forgave him for that, they knew he was a very special driver, always entertained in everything he did. There are very few drivers like him and even fewer in modern f1 where expressing yourself as an individual is shunned upon.

As a brazilian motorsport fan, I had the privilege to see Gilles racing in my country in the F1 Brazilian GP from 1978, his first one, until 1982, his last one. I remember 1982 Brazilian GP, in Rio de Janeiro. I was on the stands vibrating with the dispute between him , Piquet and Rosberg for the lead of the race. It was fantastic! Good memories. Thanks for up loading this video. Salut, Gilles

Peter you should be the head of all Media in F1 today as no one bring and give life to F1 today of the new and old as you .... Thank you for sharing with us , I have only been following F1 since 1998 so this is all amazing insight to me.... also like Claudio below said, we would like to see this spirit in today drivers, also I dont care what anyone says .... There is nothing more satisfying than a powerful growl of V12 V10 V8 engine ... you can see it today when it fires up and puts smiles on people faces.Sad that big car manufacturer have taken over into this soundless and soulless hybrid engine.. thats not F1 sadly , I travel every year from California to Austin, the WOW factor is gone

Behind every successful man there is a especially strong woman and Johanne Villeneuve is that woman . She supported what Gilles did and had to raise 2 children after Gilles death . Jacques did what his father aimed for and Melanie and her mom own a successful construction company in Montreal . Johann supported her son's endeavor to be a race driver as well and Jacques has been very successful , a CART Championship , a INDY 500 victory and a rookie of the year in F1 in 1996 and a F1 WDC in 1997 There is another daughter , born in 1993 , Jessica 25 years old .......

Dijon ‘79 is funny in that the battle for 2nd is the most talked about part. Completely overshadowed the maiden winner of his home Grand Prix, maiden winning manufacturer in their home Grand Prix, maiden turbo win... normally that would be enough to steal the show 😂

I travelled to the 1982 Belgium GP from London and was stood near the corner where Gilles had is accident, thanfully i didn't see the accident as my travel guide from page & moy ask us to make our way back to the coach 10 minutes before the end of qualifying. I was a newbie to F1in 82' and was unaware of Gilles's Legendary staus at the time.

With your age and international travel, Id prefer that you talk about personal and F1 measures taken to keep safe. Rather than puffing former glories as a place filler.
