The Vroom Vroom EP is probably the best place to start diving into her catalogue, it was the turning point when she started to work with more abrasive and eccentric producers such as SOPHIE and A.G cook. The two mixtapes that follow are definitely worth listening to, particularly her track with Carly Rae Jepsen called Backseat, but for me, neither of those albums quite reach the heights of her album from last year, Charli. In particular, her single from that with Christine and the Queens blows me away every time I hear it.

charli is known for being an experimental artist. she's pushing pop boundaries and i think she's changing the music industry, she does everything she wants without caring about charts or sales and that's so inspirational to me.

Hi, I'm a huge Charli xcx fan and this was the first video from you I've seen. I think it's very interesting to see my favorite artist viewed through the lens of someone who knows almost nothing about her. In my opinion, Charli xcx has one of the most interesting career trajectories in the current pop/music landscape. She went from writing and singing radio friendly, commercial music, to creating some of the most absolutely insane and unique sounds in pop today. She straddles the line between commercial and underground so well. Her first two albums "true romance"(2013) and "sucker"(2014) in my opinion are really boring, really bland pop music that you would find playing in your local forever 21. However, in 2016 she released her "vroom vroom" ep, and her musical style changed dramatically. I'd highly recommend giving it and her "pop2" mixtape a listen.
I'm also glad that you brought up the discussion you had with your son about pop music, because I believe it opens up such an interesting dialogue. When I say that I like pop music, most people will picture in their head the clean, commercial, bland songs that that get repeated on the radio endlessly; Artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, The Chainsmokers, etc. But I believe that pop is so much more than that. Artists like Charli xcx are changing the way pop looks, by using crazy and unique production that you won't hear on the radio. I personally like to call this type of music "hyperpop" but it doesn't really have an official name. I hate it when people tell me that pop music sucks, or that people only like it because it's catchy, because for the people who say these things the only type of pop music they've been exposed to is the non-offensive, boring stuff that plays on the radio.
Some great pop album recommendations are:
-"1000 gecs" by 100 gecs. One of the members of this band, Dylan Brady, did some production work for Charli's "how im feeling now". so if you want some crazy, abrasive pop/edm, give this a listen.
-"oil of every pearl's un-insides" by SOPHIE. SOPHIE is also a producer that charli xcx has worked with in the past. I think that SOPHIE is way ahead of her time, and is making some of the most uniquely produced music in the pop landscape right now. Her music ranges from cutesy bubble gum pop to heavy industrial, nightmarish music.
-"Pang" by Caroline Polachek. "Pang" is not a "hyperpop" album, in fact I believe this album is classified as "art pop", but this album has some of the most beautiful, layered, and unique pop music I've heard.
-"Art angels" by Grimes. This is not a hyperpop album either, I just think it's just some really solid pop music. The production on this album is really upbeat and just all around fun.
I'd love to hear you review any of these or charli xcx's past works :)

A lot of her songs are 'bubble-gum bass pop' songs. Dylan Brady, who produced Anthems (I agree the highlight) has produced amazing music, from his music in his duo 100 gecs (some love it some hate it), to experimental hip-hop songs by Injury Reserve and some songs in my favourite bubblegum bass pop album by Dorian Electra called Flamboyant. DO LISTEN TO FLAMBOYANT IT IS AN AMAZING ALBUM.

This is Charli's first album without any features. If you enjoyed this album you should definitely listen to her work she's released since 2016.

anthems is definately the highlight (given the timeliness) though apart from that iggy pop song "I don't care" which you reference and her feature on Iggy Azela's "Fancy" her song "Boom Clap" was all that I had heard previous (was working in the service industry in 2014). This was the first album of hers I've listened through and I agree given the context (coronavirus/pop) it works surprisingly well (though I did like enemy lol).

Trophy and Secret are my favorites from the EP. I didn't like the song that A.G. Cook produced which was called Paradise.

I'm genuinely surprised by how good this album is. I liked a few Charli songs in the past but didn't get into her work. Definitely going to be in my favourite albums of the year.

    Dude....I'm hooked on your videos.
I left an obscene amount of comments on your review of The 1975's NOACF....but that's because you provoked a LOT of ideas about the album.
I kind of love that you're willing to look into artists a generation younger that you are. I'm probably 10 years younger than you...but I hope I'm as open minded and curious and willing to put my finger to the pulse of whatever it is that happens to be happening...NOW. History proves that NOW is always where novelty is happening. Why not invest in that?

So Charili's friend and fellow popstar (of 'Call Me Maybe' fame) Carly Rae Jepsen has apparently just released a surprise album of sorts today and I'm interest to see if you'll give it a listen. As a Canuck I was familiar with Jepsen's debut album (which I liked) more of a folksy pop piece of work and even the EP 'Curiosity' which Call Me Maybe was initially on. Then she blew up and apart from her first mainstream album following CMM 'Kiss' which was okay, and 2015 single 'Run Away With Me' I haven't listened of hers since then but I'll think I'll give this one a listen. Interested to hear what you think.

i wouldn't say enemy is right out bad. its just the most poppy of all the songs on the album. it felt very personal and it seemed the producer wanted that to show by mostly taking their hands off the craziness and just having a cut and dry pop song.

I think it's kinda odd that we think of sexual imagery of women as intrinsically "hetero" and sexual men as "homo." Maybe this criticism is off-base because Charli is a straight woman and Micael Hadreas is a gay man, but it seems very male-centric (I'm sure there's a more proper term for this but I don't know what it is) to assume that sexual depictions of both men and women are presenting to a male gaze. Anyway, just some food for thought.

React to her 2nd latest album Charli! One of the best albums of the century in my opinion. Very similar to How I'm Feeling Now, a lot of experimental production and meaningful lyrics. I'd say it's a more polished version of the HIFN album
