- Jennifer Hudson delivers a stunning encore of "Nessun Dorma" at the Apollo Theater on August 19, 2021, the Apollo's first show since the pandemic began.
I love how at 39 not only she's at her career peak and vocal peak but she's also challenging herself musically, taking directions she never took before. Bravo JHud, I hope u win Oscars and Grammys next year, coz your work in Respect is phenomenal
This ain't her career peak which is sad as she should be worshipped
38 Siddharth Naagar Opera isn’t new to Jennifer Hudson. She’s talked about studying when she was younger. She also performed an operatic selection on The Voice with two of her contestants.
@@TheBakko343 mmmmm…. I love jhud but Her opera is horrible! She mispronounced so many words - no excuse- if u r gonna sing it; sing it correctly or don’t sing it! She breathes in between a word - which is a big No No! You must finish the phrase and cannot breath in the middle of a WORD! She ran out of breath at the last climax of “pinchero” which was supposed to be the climax! She rushed the song and the emotions didn’t match what the song was about -- honestly , it was an epic fail! She should have taken vocal coaching and perfected it before attempting it. Some things, you cannot just wing! It’s like asking Julie Andrews to sing Rock - it doesn’t work! And this did not work!
@@michaelgray3944 Jennifer is exploring her instrument and is a work in progress. I think the reason she chose to perform this publicly was to show that she is still growing as a artist and is capable of doing more than R&B or gospel (the boxes BW in the music industry are put in). Normani had to fight with her label (with help from Ariana Grande) just so she could put out "Motivation" a couple of years ago. They didn't think a black girl could sell a pop record. She proved them wrong.
@@michaelgray3944 you do know she wan't doing out right opera but Aretha's rendition which was last minute due to circumstances. Look up Aretha's its meant to be a soulful rendition of opera and not meant to be perfect at all. smh
Jennifer Hudson is to be applauded, commended and encouraged for stepping out of the box and testing her abilities! Her growth as an artist has been phenomenal👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
She did do that Leveled Up!

There has to be a gifted producer and writer willing to give JHUD the material she deserves to record to capitalize her tremendous vocal abilities vs. all of the supreme cover efforts we witness like this?!
They are waiting in the wings Trust.
I know right! I find it hard to connect with her personal music but her cover songs always move me and put me in awe of her vocal talent. She needs the write team to curate the music that not only best utilizes her voice but also connects with the general public.
I have stated that for years! She has to get that one or two producers at the max. Get to the essence of her voice. Not just the high notes, but the low registers that she does just as well. Be very selective of each song and handle with care. Example like what Producer Arif Mardin did for Chaka Khan when she went solo. The interesting thing I’m not her biggest fan, but you can feel talent! It’s coming, Fred Nelson is her musical director now and was Aretha’s a few years before she passed. Whom I had the tremendous opportunity to work with! Here’s to Jennifer!!🍾💐🙏🏾❤️
@@robertcarter5746 Exactly! I know she's been working with Clive Davis, and I'm surpised he hasn't done that with her yet. It's a tremendous waste of talent.
that was my first thought, she really needs some good producers that can work with her voice and make it stand out even more so she can have her "I will Always Love You" big hit! She has what it takes.
I had no idea there were so many world class opera singers sitting on their sofa during a pandemic. Who knew?
Right!
JHud is doing her thing, not claiming to be an opera singer. I for one am glad shes not pretending to be operatic.
I know and hear the differences but enjoy her instrument any way.
All the highly paid armchair critics should fell free to give it a thumbs down and move on. Nobody cares why. This is entertainment not school.
@@sofabee1 She sucks. I don't have to be a "world class opera singer" to have an opinion on how bad she sounds.
Well, sitting on their sofa during a pandemic is exactly what they would be doing since they can't perform and tour during a pandemic. That said, I doubt any of the commenters on UA-cam you're referring to are any of them...just as you imply! Just world class haters, trolls and sourpusses.
@@GalaxyNexus1 why do you have to be so fascist and unable to tolerate difference of opinion? Its really tacky
@@mugrad25 "difference of opinion" is an interesting spin on unnecessary criticism and negativity. Why can't you, or anyone else enjoy a talented performer or flip the channel and move on? Not everything deserves a negative comment. If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all. Too many people have nothing better to do than to try to tear others down. Yet those same people can't seem to put that same energy into recognizing and improving their own, actual flaws. If you don't like it, that's fine. Watch something you DO like and comment on that! And, fyi, your bastardization of the word "fascist" is absurd, dramatic, and ridiculous...and much, much more than "tacky."
Jennifer out here looking like Whitney to pay tribute to Aretha. Channeling the two greatest! Good on you girl!
🗣️ TRUTH!!!! ❣️❣️❣️❣️
No. Jennifer is channeling Aretha. This has nothing to do with Whitney!
Bottom line not easy and I doubt it’s going to be a part of her song list ...

Oh wow this performance is even better than the one she gave of this song in the park for the NYC event. She really nails that last note on this one, wow. The acting the singing the soul, perfection.

It intrigues me that classical opera aficionados are watching this video and bothering to comment. I mean how foolish of you to expect JHUD to sound like a classically trained opera singer who has spent many years crafting the skill. But for us regular folks, she was pretty impressive imho.
we , opera aficionados always feel intrigued , when a global superstar like JH , attempts to cover music written nearly a century ago or other parts written 400 years ago when pop artist were not the main thing in Europe .. she did well , it was not the cleanest performance , but it was audacious , and she hit all the expected marks and even finished with a highest note at the end .. but in opera , not always hitting high notes are the most challenging things to achieve ... I am going to leave it like that ...
@@MrLuis85698 I didn't cry. I didn't get chills. I'd like to hear her take on Casta Diva.
IT AMAZES ME WHEN YOU CRITICS COMPLAIN THAT NO ONE INCLUDES THIS OR THAT BUT WHEN SOMEONE OF JHUD CALIBER DOES IT YOU CRTIQUE IT. SHE DID WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE PERIOD!!
@@rellenoz agreed , I did not cry or got chills either ... I dont think she can tackle Casta Diva, I dont think she has the patience in her style enough to do that , if Nessum dorma did not move a fiber in you , what makes you think that Casta Diva , which has been a mystery for every single soprano since its creation (with the exception of callas and very few names ) would to the trick .. ? that's too much to ask ...
@@olympusman2004 she is a Caliber in R&B, she is not even in the same breath of many Iconic Pop singers like Beyonce or Whitney Houston , she can not fill an Arena or Stadium o her own not even in a midsize city , she is not a "Sold Out" artist by any stretch , I have never seen a promo that says : JH on tour tickets available now ... because she is not that Girl!! Period .. she is a good vocalist , but her sound itself dont sell records no matter what she sings , she is not Adele , nor Ariana Grande , nor Rihana .. she sings the operatic aria , which is the only piece of classical singing the world knows (because of the popularity of AGT, and other TV shows ) and do a decent job , but not up to classical standards , she did what needed to to be done to get a pay check that night and period . she did not make history , nor will be this a wow factor success story

It's interesting to hear a pop singer tackling this opera number most famously performed by Pavarotti. Her voice is very different from a typical opera singer and she seemed to strain at a few parts to be right on the notes, but the finish was fantastic. She is just so talented that she can do almost anything with her voice.

She recently played Aretha Franklin, who sang this song at the 1996 Grammy's on short notice because Pavarotti was sick...I don't think the point was to be opera-technical. Franklin's performance of the song infused more soulful sounding elements. Sometimes soul isn't supposed to be perfect, but authentically you.
@@lesajohnson8109 , That was the 1998 Grammys.
Wow this is sooooo much better than the orchestral performance. I can't believe how much more relaxed she is here.
I love her confidence & consistency!
She is MARVELOUS! 💜💜💜. If anyone could play The Queen it is JHUD 💜💜💜
Diva.
To all of the comments trying to diss her because she “isn’t an opera singer”… she’s not trying to be 🙄 She’s the best of the best in HER GENRE and quite frankly this is the best version I’ve ever heard of this song (besides Pavarotti of course). Switching this song to a belty/soulful song is genius because it’s where her voice shines the most. Also… belting this high is honestly more impressive/harder than most female opera singer’s falsetto notes
Ain't that the truth. 👍
Does she even know the meaning of the lyrics? If she, or the audience, knew the opera and aria, they'd know that none of it feels right.
opera singers dont use falsetto, pls educate yourself. Lemme see her sing it again w.o the mic now, like the "opera singers falsetto notes".
@@Tdvc I know opera singers don't technically sing with "falsetto", I was just using that as a word to clarify they don't belt the same way as Jennifer Hudson. Terms like "Head Voice" and "Mixed Voice" are super vague and mean different things to different people but "Falsetto" is never confused with belting
@@willwalker24601 and in what world that belt in the video is more impressive/harder than, for example Maria Callas extinguishing an entire verdian orchestra + chorus+tenor+mezzo-soprano+baritone all at the same time with one Eb6 WITHOUT A MICROPHONE ?

Jhud you never seize to amaze. You are a treasure!
That was some SUPERB singing!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🎵🎶💯
She is in rare form. Clearly we know she is a dramatic soprano. She has entered that realm of artistry few have entered. Whitney and Aretha both have taken cracks at operatic singing and blown it away jennifer is on that path as a versatile vocalist
beyonce is amazing at opera too
@@chidozieuwa4641 no one is here for beyonce and no one cares about her lol. This is bout Jennifer
Mmmmm…. Sorry but this was an Epic fail at opera! I love jhud, but it’s important to be fair and call a spade a spade! She mispronounced many words, took breaths at the wrong time in the middle of a word- which is a big No No…. She ran out of breath on her last “pinchero” climax- which is the most important part of this song!…. She rushed the song and it’s obvious why- because she knew this is not her genre and she knew it was all wrong. Her styling didn’t match the words she was singing….. she needs to know what it’s about to convey the emotion and hers was all wrong! Sorry, for those familiar with the song; we applaud her effort but truly and honestly - No Shade - it was just horrible! It was like watching a Ballerina try Hip Hop…. Somethings just don’t work. You may be good in one genre, but it does not necessarily mean it works in another. I am confident that if she took vocal coaching in this genre; she could do it…. But this was clumsy and She was not prepared to take this on. It’s called learning your craft - and she has not learned this craft of singing opera yet. No different than Diana Ross trying to sing Acid Rock…..she would need training in how to move, how to enunciate words, how to get gritty and raspy with your voice, etc. This was just bad. Sorry jhud - no shade!
This is far from opera... a gorgeous performance of a pop singer singing a tenor aria... great performance but this is way way below the brilliance of an opera singer
Jennifer is not a dramatic soprano. She is definitely a mezzo.
She seems so natural singing opera, like it came second nature to her. This woman's instrument is an undeniable gift. I think she should sing more opera in the future. Just glorious and stunning.
And just remember. She came SEVENTH (7th) on American Idol!!!!
@@fjohnson3002 I know right. It's crazy to think about.
Mmmmm…. NO! She should not sing opera-- it’s ALL WRONG!…… her mispronounces words….. she breathes in the middle of a word without finishing the phrasing and thought-she is screaming and pushing and singing from her head voice which is NOT OPERA! ……Go listen to Pavarotti or even Jackie Evanko or others on X Factor that sing it correctly! ……it’s a notable attempt…. But the truth be told ….IN THIS GENRE - she needs vocal coaching…. Just like an opera singer would need if they tried to sing Soul music and belt….. it’s just an entire different technique. Like asking a ballerina to do hip hop or a break dancer to do formal ballet…. She was equally as clumsy. She looked gorgeous but sounded horrible- sorry, I love jhud but this was horrific to those who know this genre.
Michael Gray I always cringe when people who know little to nothing about opera think anything operatic sung by a pop singer is opera... I saw a performance of casta diva by a child on AGT and I knew that the world needed more exposure to real opera if they could upload that horrible butchery of a legendary aria as great singing.
She has took classical voice in high school and college. I had no idea until a friend of mines told me.
Jennifer hudson and leona lewis are still my favs. I've seen and heard leona sing opera which is breathtaking. Now Jennifer.....my heart is complete.

I do understand that people might have different opinions about a performance. But what I don’t like is that when it comes to opera, singers must sing it in a specific way, or they are targeted as they are the worst sinners. Opera is a genre, this song is an Aria, from an opera. It doesn’t mean that she is singing it in an operatic style. Matter of fact she isn’t! She’s singing with her belted, strong voice. If she wants to breathe in the middle of a word, or just attempt Italian without too much stress about it , then it’s fine. She’s a pop singer!
Let her sing and live her alone

Jennifer, love you from head down to your toes, you are the greatest!!!
Such talent
Gorgeous performance of a pop singer singing a tenor aria... a great performance but this is far from opera... and she doesn’t sing it like she is singing opera, which I like.... she sings it like Jen... real opera singing is a different beast altogether and I’m glad she doesn’t go there coz she’d never pull it off without years of rigorous training.. she keeps it in her realm where she nails it.
