  • Harut and Marut are two figures mentioned in Islamic tradition, particularly in the Quran. They are believed to be angels who were sent down to Babylon (Babel) to test humanity's faith. According to the Islamic narrative, they were given knowledge of magic and taught it to humans, but with a warning that it was a trial from God and they should not use it for sinful purposes.
However, humans succumbed to the temptation and began practicing magic for evil purposes. Harut and Marut were disappointed by this and expressed their disapproval. The Quran states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102):
"And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew."
In Islamic tradition, Harut and Marut are seen as symbols of the temptation and test of human free will. Their story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to worldly desires and straying from the path of righteousness.

Quite didactic, you have elaborated it in the most lucid manner that bounds one till the end. At times I think inevitably of death is a driving force for humnkind to stay away from the transient lust for the world.
