Thanks for all the good comments people I appreciate everyone of them.. also I couldn’t remember the name of the tv program I was asked to be in and it was THE DREAM TEAM which used to be on on sky one.. so looking back I was probably did the right thing by going down the the pub with my mates lol… jokes aside I am glad to be back around football & looking forward to future.. thanks again & all the best 🤝
Coached Sonny for many years. Technically excellent and would've gone to the top if left alone to blossom naturally. However! His father fed him to the wolves. Eric Hall Greg Dyke and Murdochs News of the World. The FAss proved useless and instead of helping the boy, they ignored all pleas and to add salt to wounds, they employed Dyke as Chairman of the FAss. Enough said . Sonny is a decent human being and I should know. Great interview, well done.
So glad someone like yous commented.... My Nephews aged 6.... He's had a sheff United and Manchester United scout out to watch him..... Do you not reckon age 6 is young for academies though
Let hiM enjoy playing for fun with out pressure the academy system is all a mirage less then 2% players who enter academy system ever play a game of pro football
This is a eye opener to all parents, we all want the best for our kids but there’s a fine line between encouraging & over bearing at such a young age. It’s great when they get signed for these big clubs but if they get released it can damage them for good. Let them enjoy football at all levels and don’t let the big clubs spoil or damage there mind set with rejection. Top fella great story.
I remember this lad, we used to play for the same team, chalden youth in edmonton. I was in the under 16s when he was in the under 12s or there abouts.. The hype around him was mental..
good podcast. refeshing to hear stories that are not crime related. It shows everybody faces difficult trials and tribulations in life, regardless of their environment.
Reffed Sonny at a Cheshunt FC 5a-side tournament when he was around 10 ! Different gravy - What a barnet too 😆😆 Lovely fella, great family round him too - See you & the boy at footy on Monday night 😉
What a lovely fella after everything he’s been through and the situation with his dad must of been ripped his heart out to be betrayed like that and the disloyalty my someone who’s meant to love and protect you from the things that their doing to you themselves… but the way you’ve come through this is amazing and having experienced the same things you need to know that what your dad did wasn’t personal it wasn’t because who you were but the fact that you were there and if it wasn’t you it would be someone else. Your dad must have had some problems maybe gambling etc because no one in the right mind would make a concious decision to ruin their kids life.. so please try not to have a crippling resentment it seems like your living a good life now mate.. I’m a cabbie as well.. keep them locked!
Remember him from when I was a kid (Shoot/90 Minutes etc). What an interesting story and what a shame for him. To have that talent and still be humble, honest and articulate. Glad for him that he's able to see the positives. Comes across as a good bloke and less "I could have been the best" than half the no marks who obviously didn't have the talent he had. Far more interesting than some bloke talking about how many people he banged in prison.
absolute quality fella ! great memory for the details, obvious mad passion for the game, wish him all the best for the future. Great interview James, well done mate !
I remember seeing this guy at a football tournament in Bognor Regis at a Butlins when I was a kid, reckon late 80s/early 90s - his Dad was making him do kick ups in the restaurant while he was sat, he was only allowed to eat while he kept the ball in the air - what a blast from the past, always stayed with me that memory
I remember him going on fantasy football with badiel & skinner when he went over to Ajax. Always wondered what happened to him. These parents & the greedy clubs need to let kids be kids. Laws need to change
I played against Sonny when I was a teenager. Our teams was full of players that were having trials and a few of us had been offered deals at academies. We walked our local league but this was a county cup or something like that. I'm sure the team Sonny played for were called Street Youth and he tore us apart scoring at will, we lost something silly like 9-1. He was literally unplayable that day.
Have Family in Enfield, remember going over summer & there was a charity match of some sort on, & all the talk was Sony pike was gonna play, & the pitch was crowded everyone was there to see him, he was already at ajax I think, always looked out for him & thought he was gonna be a mega star. Looking forward to watching this
Quality stuff. I was second guessing your follow up questions James & you asked everything I would of! Brilliant guest & interview. What a shame for the lad
Went to primary school with this dude, all he wanted to do was play football. I’m sure his Dad had good intentions but the promotion around him was a bit of a joke, pushed him way too hard too soon.
I once won pen shootout at Bobby Charlton Soccer School about 95/96. Thought I'd get a class prize. Won some Cica Blades. Gutted. I eventually got scouted by Man United. Problem was i played year above me. And strangely they never sent a scout for my own age. It's all lucky breaks, right place at right time sometimes
Sonny seems like a really nice guy get a good vibe from him. I think what he meant with drinking is that he was a binge drinker and I think the acting tv series was probably Dream Team. Really hope he carries on with coaching kids. And he is so much better off without his father. The guy just wanted to manipulate and use him.
There's an old interview with the Celtic manager Ange when he is the Australian under 21 coach. Type Ange v Craig foster into UA-cam. He is the spitting image of you on that clip. Also a brilliant confrontation m. He is seriously identical to you. Your ma ever in Australia..?
Never heard off sonny seems a good lad with a story I've always noticed anyone being called the NEW whoever don't seem to make it big if your a good footballer you will make it on your own name good interview tho James 👍
Too much too soon. Should have been allowed to develop behind closed doors, make his mistakes with less attention and enjoy his football. Footballers don't get much of a childhood, but Sonny literally had his stolen completely
Nobody knows if he would have made it. Could he shine under pressure or fold. He clearly fancies himself with his jacket on but he needs to let football go. You will never be a pro in this life or the next and the sooner he accepts that the better off he will be.

What a sound guy, more than can be said for his old man, what a shame.

Was there to. Lemsford. Won the final. The good old days when the knees still worked.
That's the one mate! Knee's, back...all used to work once. I think I scored a hoof from the half way line - peak of my footy career
