Forest -- you need to add that it is necessary to have the Scheme set to GUID Partition Map. Otherwise, APFS will not be an option.

Thanks for the video. My query is if you partition an external drive, SSD or HDD can you format just one partition? I tried it with a HDD that had previously been formatted to EX FAT and it only wanted to format the whole drive. Maybe other formats can allow you to format partitions. Thanks.

Unfortunately no, formatting can only apply to the entire drive.
