I have not had any issues with the router overheating. However, I do power it down at night. It does go on as soon as I wake up and runs all day. When I am home it is used for about 5+ hours of streaming netflix, web surfing and gaming. At the end of the day it is warm but nothing that I would think would make it overheat.
You may need to reset the modem. Cut the power to your modem to reset it. Try unplugging it for about 5min then plugging it back in and see if that works.
Yes it is possible to use the N300 as a repeater. The main issue with using repeaters is that your bandwidth might take a hit. The more repeaters you use the slower your speeds will be the further you are from the base station.
I have this same exact router. I had mine around 4 years and it works flawlessly. I am using a desktop pc running windows 8. I use it for my portable devices. As of right now I have bluray player, smartphone, ipod touch, 8 inch tablet connected to it. I use it mostly for streaming internet radio to a Bluetooth speaker and it works great with no problems on all my devices. Highly recommended router- I would buy again if it breaks. It also has great coverage. My ipod touch can work within a range of over 100 feet
@faraaz rehman The flickering or flashing lights indicate that data is being sent or received. If there is nothing going on the lights will just stay on or have a steady glow.
If you use the set up disk that comes with the router it will put a icon on your desk top you can use to open the set up. The other way you can do it is by typing 192.168.1.1 into the url bar.
Just happen to be on. One other solution I might offer which is a little more then a $2 extension cord would be to get another WiFi router and use it as a repeater, if the extension cord does not work and you do not feel comfortable flashing OpenWRT.
Thanks, I was trying to decide which router to get because I've been outta the loop for a while. Had a Linxus way back but it annoyed me, so I've been using a regular modem. Ive decided to make the leap back to the wireless world. Thanks for your input!
To do this you will need to go under the wireless settings then to channel. If it is set to auto it will jump between channels trying to find the least busy one. What you want to do is use something like Meraki WiFi Stumbler to find out what the lest busy channel is in your area the change auto to that channel number. Don't forget to hit apply and save.
I was not able to find a place to down load it. However if you hard line to it and then open a web browser and put 192.168.1.1 into the url bar. You will be brought to the web interface for it and can set it up from there.
I think it may be your ISP. I have at times run netflix off of my wired PS3, and had 3 wireless computer connections all gaming with out a drop. What I would do before calling up your ISP is check and make sure that the router is not set to search and and jump to the least busy channel in your area. This could drop your wireless connection.
You would be looking at nat type 2. Type one is if you were going right from your modem to the PS3. Type 2 is when there is a wifi router involved. It should be automatic, I did not have any issues with my PS3 when I hooked it up to this wifi router.
I too have had this router about a year and a half and haven't had any issues until recently where I can't connect my google chromecast. Google says its the AP isolation needs to be disabled but I can't find that in the routers menus.
Yes it should work so long as your comcast/xfinity does not give you a modem/wifi box. I have optium/cablevision and I just run a Ethernet cable from their modem to this wifi router.
The numbers on the front light up if you have a devise connected to one of the LAN ports on the back. If you do not have anything hooked up to them the numbers will not light up.
If you are using the software that comes with the WNR200 you are going to have to take it on faith. I looked through all the options that I could find and did not see anywhere to up the output power. However, if you install something like DD-WRT, or OpenWrt you should be able to up the power output.
I've thought about the repeater idea, too. I've also considered power line networking or running Ethernet from the house to the workshop. I do play with electronics all the time but for a project like improving my day-to-day Internet performance on a computer I regularly use, I wanted my first approach to be something simple, obvious and direct. That's why I looked for Power Settings and came up empty. Thanks.
Umm it will not. I am not sure if I am missing something or not but the netgear only lets you have multiple wired connections and sets up a wireless network. Internet speed aka upload and download speed are solely determined my your ISP and the package you have with them.
As of right now I have no idea if im on the one steady channel. I'm call up Netgear to have them show me how to make sure that I am on one stable channel. And it's every device in the house hold that loses wifi to make me reset the wifi on the router.
It is a hard thing to figure out. My customary response is make sure that you are sitting on a single channel. Next is it only your device that is having this issue or are there others in your home with similar issues?
The only thing I can think of is either getting a different plan with verizon to get more band with or trying a dual band wifi router. This way you have 5ghz spectrum and 2.4ghz to play with. Last would be if possible play on a wired connection. It should give your priority over wireless connections.
Turning off the wifi by the transmitter button will not turn off the LAN connections. Turning off the wifi vby the power button will. You will still be able to use your PS3 if the wifi transmitter is turned off so long as it is connected to a LAN port. No disconnect or in game lag. It is possible to use the LAN ports with no wifi connectivity. It is also possible to use both the wifi and LAN at the same time. I surf the web on my computer over wifi while watching netflix on my PS3 via LAN.
I like this router but I wish I knew the WiFi power output. My workshop computer has a Belkin USB WiFi dongle. Its small internal antenna yields a POOR signal. If I increase the WNR2000's output power, that would help. I've been through the menus and found no access to WiFi power setting. The manual mentions it once and says the default is "Full." Can I check and change that or do I need to take it on faith??? Thanks to all. I will check back here daily for at least a week. John
I am sorry to say that I can not tell you for sure. I run Windows 7 and no one I know has upgraded to windows 8 so I can not test it out. However, looking up the N300 up on Netgear's site it does say that supports Windows 8. Although they did not make it easy to find.
What I mean by open wifi network is people who do not password protect their wifi network have what is called an open network. This means that anyone who is looking for a wifi signal can see and get on to yours. If you lock your wifi there is no issue. If you don't to see people on your wifi look under Attached Devices it will show you all tech that is on your wifi. Guest network if you did not turn it on it will not be on. Password change go to Wireless Settings. You can change it there.
Is there a downside to having a repeater? I think I recall that it cannot repeat at a rate any faster than half the data rate obtainable at the primary router. If true, the data rate I get near the router, 20 to 32 Mbps down, would be 10 - 16 MBps through the repeater. Yes, this is over the 8 Mbps that I usually get with the low signal in the workshop now. However, should I spend time and money for a small increase in data rate? True, it might be worth doing for the learning experience.
I bought the N300 over a month ago and the basic function of the router works as expected, but the power light continously blinks from green to amber. Apparently, a software upgrade is needed from the NetGear website, but I am now hesitant to go there because of a disastrous experience with the Genie software download. The download contained a supposedly optional junk registry program which crashed the hard drive upon it's removal. Consequently, the resulting tech support cost me over $200 in repairs. This $36 router wasn't such a good deal after all!
My Internet Provider advised turning off the Bridge Mode for a better signal but on the Netgear Genie, there is no actual "Bridge Mode" indicated, so how do I do that?
I am sorry I no longer have this Router. However, bridge mode should not be turned on by default. This option should only be available if you are trying to connect two routers wireless.
If you have the router orientated like I have in my video there will be a little button at the top on the back, press it. You will know that it is off when the blue antenna icon on the front is not blue any more.
Does it matter if your console is connected to LAN port 1 or 4? Heard some routers port 4 is almost like a "high" speed port and helps with buffer bloating.
hmm i don't know then because i talked to a friend who bought something, not sure if this was the exact thing but he said it atleast doubled his speed. I am not 100 percent if this was it.
Yeah like i actually got a dual band wifi but i can't tell if i am connected to the 5ghz. I am always wired to it so thats no worries. I got a belkin n450 DB and i have them set up just dunno if i am connected to the 5ghz one.
Great review. Thanks for the info on how to change channels. I also live in an apartment complex so the Wi-Fi is rampant. I was wondering why the Wi-Fi would drop every once in awhile...
You mentioned turning off something so to stop getting dropped off because you live in an apartment complex. What is it do you turn off so not to get dropped off while downloading?
To do this you will need to go under the wireless settings then to channel. If it is set to auto it will jump between channels trying to find the least busy one. What you want to do is use something like Meraki WiFi Stumbler to find out what the lest busy channel is in your area the change auto to that channel number. Don't forget to hit apply and save.
It might. I do not use mine as an extender so I can not say for sure. I do know that unless you tell it other wise it will always try and find the least busy channel to be on.
Hey Wanderer001, can you (or any of your fine viewers) please tell me where in the dashboard I need to go to turn off that channel hopping feature that you mentioned at 7:40 minutes into your video? Under what heading will I find it? My N300 WNR2000v2 looses a signal every ever couple of hours, and it is very annoying. Thanks for posting.
Thank you very helpful, and yeah on the guest network I just changed the security key(passphrase) its hard to understand the definition panel that appears to the right when you are on the configurations,so the on and off button well theres like three choices, but on the panel that appears kinda says the contrary. Oh yeah last questions, If i want to create a new network and still keep the old one ,do i just delete the first one? and say i want to delete the old one permanently,How??
That was fast. Thanks. I have seen reference to OpenWRT in connection with mesh networks so I may be obtaining a copy. On the downside, I would hate to "brick" my router when maybe just moving it ($2 extension cord) would solve the problem. Thanks for your informative video. I'll check out others.
Anthony Zorn I have not had any issues when playing my PS3 online. Some times it might get bogged down with a lag spike but not too often. As for at&t if you have the lowest plan it might be an issue. 3mbs might not be enough for online gaming. The middle plan with 18mbs should be just fine.
Hey it went straight to a type 3 ! Idk what to do to make it a type 2. As soon as i hooked the router up and got it connected via (netgear genie) to the internet i turned on my ps3 hooked up wirelessly and ran a connection test....Please help me out thanks!
Ok, so the next thing you need to do is log into the the routers web interface. Then go to Wireless Settings and look for Channel: if it is set to auto. Change it to the channel that you have a good signal strength on.
First thing to check would be the firmware, make sure you have the most up to date version on there. Next if you are switching from an old cable modem you may need to power down both devices for 5-10min then power up the modem and the plug in the Netgear. That should take care of the issue let me know if it does not.
If at all possible go wired. You will always get better performance from a wired connection. If not depending on the game you should be ok with a wireless connection too.
+americo garza Best thing to do in a case like that it to unplug everything and start fresh plugging everything back in. I am not sure if you have doe that yet. Next would be is it the power light that is orange or the network light?
If you really did not play too much with the router when you were setting it up other then to make a network name what you can do is this. Go to a computer that is already on the network, or hard lined into the router and open a web browser. Type in 192.168.1.1 into the url bar. When the pop up asking for user name and password shows up type in admin for username and password for the password. Then on left click wireless setting you will see your passphrase.
I am not sure why the box says that. This router only operates in the 802.11 b/g/n @ 2.4 GHz. Where did you get this from? Also is it the N300 (WNR2000). Could you have gotten a different WRN model?
I've looked everywhere on the router and I found nothing. What should I do. :/ Cause I think I messed up on the setup. I have never really done a router setup til a month ago.
+MasterGamer18 If you can not locate a restart button on the router itself, then log into the web UI. There should be a reset option on one of the tabs.
I try logging into it but I have satellite atm and when I try to even get to the login box it won't show. It says "webpage not found". I've been there before but not on a satellite ISP.
+MasterGamer18 ... Sounds like an issue with the ISP then. Are you trying to plug the router into a modem provided by the ISP or right from the ISP line?
How do you get into the user interface of the router? I have this exact same router. It works good in the rooms close by, but upstairs it is slower? I think I need to set the channel.....
+Kimberly Bowman Simplest way would be to start a browser and type 192.168.0.1 into the URL bar. This will log you into the web user interface for your router.
I have a century link router now, but I don't have a modem. Is it both a modem and a router? I just got the netgear 300 so I don't have to lease the one from centurylink.
From what I can see century link had a box that acts as both the modem and wifi router. The N300 only acts as a wifi router. Do you have DSL with century link? I have found Netgear products that act as both a modem and wifi router. DSL models can be found here; www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/dsl-modems-routers/. Cable models can be found here; www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/cable-modems-routers/. I hope that helps.
Hey man my netgear extender used to work with my xfinity box at my old home. At my old home tho the xfinity box was connected thru ethernet modem. Now at my new home xfinity box is connected thru the cable modem and my netgear extender won't connect to it. Any suggestions
I dont know why but i bought this thinking that it would be an upgrade from my outdated n150 but after i set it up and everything it felt slower/has weaker wifi signal than the n150.
I have cable modem ( Motorola) and wireless router (Net gear ) One or twice a day, my internet is out. I unplug power to net gear, fix the problem. Long term wise, is annoying, What I do wrong? - I have the same darn thing.
anonymous If everything is plugged in correctly and nothing is lighting up you may have a defective unit. I might suggest trying to exchange it for a new one.
I'm trying to setup a static IP address. When I type in the "Default Gateway" it says I need a username and password to log in to the NETGEAR "Default Gateway" website. I am trying to set up a minecraft server. Thanks!
Hey i just purchased one of these i have no type of internet or wifi ... is that ok for this to work? I got this so i can have wifi do i just set it up and i have wifi or???
What if your phone does not have internet or any any device does not have internet can you still hook it up and get internet from that router would it be good for my Playstation 3 and would it be like really awesome and I'm playing online
Wastingmoney101 More then likely it will not. If your speeds with AT&T are slow this will not speed them up. It will only let you have an access point for the speed you already have.
+Katrine 1111 To do this you will need to go under the wireless settings then to channel. If it is set to auto it will jump between channels trying to find the least busy one. I have the Netgear N300 Wireless Ruer WNR2000 for about 8months now. And before I came back home for summer break my little brother said there was no issue with it but ever since I got home now, for 2 weeks I find the router losing wifi connection, and when it loses connection I have about 3mins to cut on and off the wifi button on the router to maintain ethernet connection. Now I'm a gamer and Ive call costomer support but they were no help. Do have any suggestions at all?
I would have to disagree with the range on this. I have one and can get mine to go much farther by running it max power all the time. I can stream a netflix movie all the way outside in the quad of my apt complex and my own apt is on the 3rd floor in the back of the building. Now there's some spots it won't pick up, but if you crank up the power on it you can get some respectable range out of it.
Hi wanderer !! i found ur video convincing enough for me to think of buying it, since i live in a large house and my room is on the terrace...is it possible if i use one more of the same Netgear N300 (WNR2000) as a repeater to extend the range to the ground floor...if yes...then, are there any cons to it?..kindly let me know..thanks man !
Great vid! I'm only getting half of the speed I should be getting through my router even after updating the firmware, resetting it, etc. I found out I need to change the WAN to a Gig or so? There's no options in the smartwizard app though....
Hi, Just bought this router for my daughter. She is having the dropping connection you talked about. Can you detail how you fixed the problem please. Thanks!!
Hmm what do you mean by Open wifi network? is it like any intruder can just find my network and steal my signal strength? How can I see who is also using my wifi and BLOCK them??? The guest network thing ,were can i click to disable it? will it affect oh say this other computer thats using my network (wifi)??? and say that i want to change the default user and password, where do i do that?? please reply....
Still rocking this bad boy in 2022
I have not had any issues with the router overheating. However, I do power it down at night. It does go on as soon as I wake up and runs all day. When I am home it is used for about 5+ hours of streaming netflix, web surfing and gaming. At the end of the day it is warm but nothing that I would think would make it overheat.
Yes making sure the firmware is up to date is another way to check one less issue off the list.

My home is about 1250sqft. I have no issues with the signal. It even extents a little bit out side of the living room where the Netgear is.
@faraaz rehman The flickering or flashing lights indicate that data is being sent or received. If there is nothing going on the lights will just stay on or have a steady glow.
I saw this router on eBay for $5.00 and used does that mean that it will work?
It should.
I got this in 2009 and it's still working.
It 8s a nice little work horse.
Yeah i am going to pick it up today. I'll let you know and see how it works. I have a bad feeling it won't do anything but we'll see.
I like a site called Meraki WiFi Stumbler. Use it to see what channel the other wifi routers are on in your area and pick the once that is not busy.
Thanks, I was trying to decide which router to get because I've been outta the loop for a while. Had a Linxus way back but it annoyed me, so I've been using a regular modem. Ive decided to make the leap back to the wireless world. Thanks for your input!

Because of the drops of my older one I am tempted to try the AUS Gaming wifi router.
I was not able to find a place to down load it. However if you hard line to it and then open a web browser and put 192.168.1.1 into the url bar. You will be brought to the web interface for it and can set it up from there.

I think I got this router about May of 2011. When I moved in with my wife. It is still working as of this post.
You are looking at usename of admin and password of just that password. If not that there should say somewhere on the router itself.
The yellow wire is supposed to connect the WiFi to your modem. If you do not connect the two the WiFi will not work.
I've heard that you can buy a repeater that hooks up to the electrical wall outlet in your house. I don't have any experience with this though...
I am not sure I understand your question. If your computer can use 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz you will not need a USB adapter.
As of right now I have no idea if im on the one steady channel. I'm call up Netgear to have them show me how to make sure that I am on one stable channel. And it's every device in the house hold that loses wifi to make me reset the wifi on the router.

just bought this model I hope it's a good purchase/upgrade from my old 54 Mbps netgear router
I use to have one had gaming support now i have Netgear Nighthawk AX3000 router hooked to my bec 6300nel Ridgewave R15 LTE modem

@xSIKBEASTxx+xSIKBEASTxx There is a small factory restore button that you can get to the back of the router which may do what you are looking for.
It could be the router, modem, or it could be your ISP. What type of speeds are you supposed to be getting from your ISP?

Wanderer001 Does this issue apply if you are using it as an extender?
It might. I do not use mine as an extender so I can not say for sure. I do know that unless you tell it other wise it will always try and find the least busy channel to be on.
I am not really sure. I do not know anything about Dish's TV cable box, sorry.
Thanks for posting.
mtaur100 I know it is a longer video but I actually do show where this option can be found and changed at the 14:11 mark. I hope that helps.
Wanderer001 Thanks for a quick response. Don't know how I missed that. I'll give it a shot. Good post.
quick question i just get mines and cant connect nothing wireless to it i mean got the name and password but it not even letting me login
Thank you very helpful, and yeah on the guest network I just changed the security key(passphrase) its hard to understand the definition panel that appears to the right when you are on the configurations,so the on and off button well theres like three choices, but on the panel that appears
kinda says the contrary.

What is the issue that you are running into that is causing you to power down the device on a daily basis?
How is when you play video games I have ps4 and a&ta for my service
Anthony Zorn I have not had any issues when playing my PS3 online. Some times it might get bogged down with a lag spike but not too often. As for at&t if you have the lowest plan it might be an issue. 3mbs might not be enough for online gaming. The middle plan with 18mbs should be just fine.
Ok good
I have not seen a difference in speed from LAN port 1-4. They all seem to give them same speed.
Hey it went straight to a type 3 ! Idk what to do to make it a type 2. As soon as i hooked the router up and got it connected via (netgear genie) to the internet i turned on my ps3 hooked up wirelessly and ran a connection test....Please help me out thanks!
How do you turn off the wifi...not the internet it self, just the wifi.
Ok, so the next thing you need to do is log into the the routers web interface. Then go to Wireless Settings and look for Channel: if it is set to auto. Change it to the channel that you have a good signal strength on.
My NETGEAR router has to be reset (un plug power - re plug power cord) almost daily. Does that mean the router is defective?
What do I need to adapt in the Netgear N300 to get it to communicate with a new DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem
First thing to check would be the firmware, make sure you have the most up to date version on there. Next if you are switching from an old cable modem you may need to power down both devices for 5-10min then power up the modem and the plug in the Netgear. That should take care of the issue let me know if it does not.
Don't really play call of duty myself. However, if I understand correctly you are talking lag. I would say 3.5 bar if that is an option.
If at all possible go wired. You will always get better performance from a wired connection. If not depending on the game you should be ok with a wireless connection too.
Thank you for your valuable feedback.
Damn alright. But it will up the speed of the internet?
I have a problem with mine! The power button is orange and that's it the other things are not flashing can you help me!
Thanks but can you use wifi and wired internet at the same time?
I live in the middle of no where... Will this work with Wildblue Satellite Internet?
+Wanderer001 how can I reset this modem because I have the newer model of it. It doesn't have a red button on the back of it.
+MasterGamer18 Even if it does not have the red button on the back there should be a reset button on the back somewhere.
Thanks man! Yeah It's dsl. Thanks for the links, and the info.
Hello! I understand that I am about 8 years late, but do you know what the original release date of this was?
About 2004.
Thank you.
I'm buyin da router off of craigslist ... an he said he didn't have da cd 2 it .. is it a way I can down load on da net n e were?
I have cable modem ( Motorola) and wireless router (Net gear ) One or twice a day, my internet is out. I unplug power to net gear, fix the problem. Long term wise, is annoying, What I do wrong? - I have the same darn thing.
My device does not turning on even if I already plug it... there is no green light responding.. what would be the problem?
Is it not powering on even when the power button in the rear of it is pressed?
yes.. even if it is already pressed. what would the problem?
anonymous If everything is plugged in correctly and nothing is lighting up you may have a defective unit.
You need to have home internet in order to use this as a wifi ac ess point.
What if your phone does not have internet or any any device does not have internet can you still hook it up and get internet from that router would it be good for my Playstation 3 and would it be like really awesome and I'm playing online
Christian Casey No you can not use this if you do not have internet coming into it.
I have AT&T and my connection is really slow would buying this help
Wastingmoney101 More then likely it will not. If your speeds with AT&T are slow this will not speed them up. It will only let you have an access point for the speed you already have.
Hi,
your talking about turning of the routers ability to jump from channel to channel... How exactly do you do that? :)
+Katrine 1111 To do this you will need to go under the wireless settings then to
channel. If it is set to auto it will jump between channels trying to
find the least busy one. What you want to do is use something like
Meraki WiFi Stumbler to find out what the lest busy channel is in your
area the change auto to that channel number. Don't forget to hit apply
and save.
Kool vid, can you use this device just as a switch? to connect my printer dvr 2 computers?
Grease Diner Yes it can be used a a switch, but keep in mind that the ports are not gigabit.
my network conectivity is not on what should i do
Thanks!!
Does this mean this router is not compatable for windows 8? I, too, live in apartment.
No you should not have to worry about using a Windows 8 computer.
