They played before us at area this weekend, thought they sounded great so I decided to find their show, surprised to see no props etc, great show nonetheless, highly entertaining and clean and congrats on making state!
The people in the back are 'visual team," but in this situation, they're just cut out of the show. Drill designers purposefully make marching/guard spots limited so the directors can choose who is better fitted to compete since some others aren't good marchers or dancers. The director most likely wants to showcase the best they can for competition, but this event doesn't seem so serious enough (UIL is the most concerning). With the left over people, the director probably wanted them to not feel bad and involved in the show and this seems to be the solution by marching unintentionally for the show. After all, their parents are paying a big fee and sitting out isn't what they paid for anyway.
