Leering Skeleton Build

- My leering Skeleton with a twist - he sits on a chimney up on the roof instead of on a tombstone in the cemetery. I skimmed over a lot of the details in this one to keep the video from running too long. I did do a photo album of the build over on our Facebook page that goes into a little more detail as far as explaining in the photos descriptions than I was able to do here. As always, feel free to ask any questions.
SAFETY! -Keep in mind that how I secured it to the vent pipe is not exactly "up to code". I only opted to do it like that because the vent pipe on our roof is an old steel one that is very sturdy and does not move at all. A thinner metal one or pvc one would probably not hold up, nor would one with any kind of wiggle to it. Vent pipes are there to prevent sewer gasses from entering your home and provide air into the drain pipes so they can drain properly. NEVER put anything over a vent pipe and block it in any way. This could cause harmful sewer gasses to back up into your house or cause a drainage issue. Every roof is different and if you want to mount anything to your roof you will have to figure out your own way of doing it safely so that it won't damage your roof or fall and harm someone. If you don't feel like you could do it safely, don't.

I've seen a lot of halloween videos but this one is in my top 5. I love how authentic and creepy it is ...looks so real. What a fantastic job you did! 🎃😃
Those G4 flame bulbs are awesome!
I tried a bunch mixed in on a hot coal set. Came out way better than xmas lights alone.
I know this video is a little old but I wanted to share some advice. I made brick walls out of this insulation foam for my haunt. I mix acetone with water. About a 30/70 mix and lightly dabbed my brick with an old sponge.
On this video, his method turned out amazing
I've seen people do the same by spraying the foam with water, then using spray paint to melt the foam. I like to do it by hand with the wire brush because it gives me more control and a more predictable, consistent outcome.
Looks real
He looks wicked
Wow! I did not realize how much planning n detail is required. I think it come out professional. If my neighbors didn’t complain I would have one on my roof year round. 🎃☠️
IM SO JELOUS OF YOUR PROPS THEY’RE AMAZING
I love that you document in detail how your brain works and what the process is like for your prop builds. It's so inspiring...so much so that I'm super duper stealing your chimney design for my own project.
Fantastic work, as usual!
Great job!
That is great, thank you for posting, we all appreciate it when you share your hard work .
Thank you so much for this great video showing from the start of planning to finishing it off. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing this project come to life so much that I will seriously be looking at making one for myself. It was funny that 10 seconds before this video ended I was wondering how you were going to illuminate the skeleton, and I said to myself maybe you'll just clamp a mini spotlight on the gutter. Wow!! Lol
You never cease to amaze me. Here in Colorado, I would put a bottom on the chimney and put some "weight" in the box. Our winds on the The Front Range during that time of year would rip that vent out of the roof.
It's not just a vent bolted to the roof. It is a steel pipe that runs down through the walls and connects the the plumbing underneath the house. It would take one hell of a wind to tear it out.
Thank you so much for sharing this. You make such incredible props. Sets a high bar for the rest of us.
My favorite prop of 2021!! I definitely will be making one. When I do I’ll tag you. Thanks for sharing.
Great job! Thanks for showing all of the items needed to make it.
Man, it just looks so good! The stain on the skeleton really pulls everything together. My house is too tall to do something similar, but maybe I can make one sitting on a gravestone for my cemetery.
Outstanding, as usual! Looking forward to seeing him in the dark!
Fantastic job! It looks great! The detail put into the chimney is amazing!
literally my favorite youtuber
This is SWEET! Definitely going to do this to my place this year. Thanks so much for this video!
Outstanding!!!!
Fantastic Job! What's the secret in not letting the plywood warp whenever it rains? The folks in So Cal have it a little easier in that department...
I painted it with exterior latex and went nuts with spar varnish on it and all of the exposed wood inside and along the edges. Fingers crossed.
Man, that's awesome! The chimney build and attention to detail is truly superior👍Great tutorial, thanks for sharing it ! About how much $ do you estimate it costs to build this prop including the price for the skeleton?
Figure around $30 for the skeleton, $20 for the motor, $20 for the turning mechanism and whatever the current cost is for a sheet of plywood and a sheet of 1/2" foam. (I already had the wood and foam for this project when I made it) skeletons can be bought on clearance for under 20, pull a wiper from a junkyard for $5 and make your own mechanismif you want to cut costs.
When you ripped his spine out, did he scream?.... I think I need some sleep.
Another amazing prop! Thank you for providing such great detail on how you did it. So inspiring! Just one question - where did you buy the lantern?
No idea. Probably picked it up at Walmart or something. I used it years ago as an actual lantern in case of power outages. Go with the lightest lantern you can find. A heavy one like I used can cause issues with the arm sagging. Time will tell if mine holds up.
Very cool but no video of him at night?? ;^(
Nope. Not till October when the entire display goes up.
This looks amazing! Great job!! Can you provide more info on the bit you used in the dremel?
I plan on doing another video that focuses only on the brick carving and texturing. This one ran so long I had to skim over or leave out a lot of the little details like that.
Looks brilliant! I normally use my full sized router to detail foam, now I need to go find a router base for my rotary tool, the control you have with it is pretty slick! Also, do you find the gorilla glue to be reactive to the foam, AKA: Melting the heck out of it? I have been trying to find something to use on foam without it melting it. Awesome video and keep up the good work!
I use the Gorilla Glue clear, which does not seem to react at all with this type of foam. I just scuff the surface of the foam a little with some sandpaper, drizzle the glue on it, spritz it with some water, then clamp the pieces together with some weight on it for 24 hours. Holds very good once set.
@@OakLaneCemetery Thanks kindly! This will save me a lot of grief.
Awesome work! What did you do to get the legs out at a wider angle? Makes it look more alive than locking them in straight forward the way they come…
I just took out the ratcheting mechanism in the hip and replaced the bolt loosely. The pelvis is attached to the chimney top with a couple of brackets and the legs are attached to the top with a couple of screws so they can't flop around or move out of pose.
@@OakLaneCemetery Thank you! I’m in the process of building one of these to sit on top of a cemetery fence column. Yours has been my go-to example, and is by far the coolest one that I’ve found!
Looks great! Would you mind sharing what color paint you are using to match the PCV and mounting hardware to the color of the skeleton?
I don't really know. I just took a bit of khaki paint, added white a little at a time till it looked close, then stained it with the same stain as the skeleton after it dried. On a side note, I keep little batches of custom paint like that in condiment cups with a lid so they stay useable for a few weeks.
@@OakLaneCemetery Thanks! I'll give that a try.
What was the LED you used? Where did you buy it? Thanks.
I started out using a little micro led from Ned's, but once I got it on the roof I found that it wasnt as visible as I wanted so I switched it to a small Moonrays led landscape light.
Can you share where you got the led for the lantern?
