The mariners have the highest strikeout rate in the game, it’s not just Julio. This isn’t excusing him, but it’s clear the batting coaches need to fix the whole lineup including Julio.
When you are being paid GENERATIONAL salary on a GENERATIONAL contract you MUST have a batting eye......Julio is yet another over-hyped hitting prospect in the long line in the past 30 years. The Ms have NOT developed a single hitting prospect with an EYE in 30+ years! This franchise has no clue what it is doing from an offensive perspective.
@@nomadkeller8612 Over-hyped hitting prospect? The guy DID IT for 2 seasons. He is not a prospect. He simply needs to stop swinging at EVERYTHING. Its like he makes his mind up to swing before the pitch is thrown. I honestly wonder if the dude needs glasses. He guesses way too much.
Very good analysis, I always wondered why pitchers have a bigger advantage at the start of the year (besides injuries of course). He’s doing alright rn, so hopefully we see that adjustment and the mariners will be unstoppable
The Javier Baez approach to baseball
I feel like this was the exact same conversation people had the start of the last 2 seasons, and Julio proceeded to do something insane later on 😅

@@nomadkeller8612 he's getting paid a generation contract to play for... Get this... A generation. Lots of greats have slow starts to seasons. You sound exactly like those stereotypical over-reactors who freak out at the first sign of trouble.
He's been getting worse and has had nowhere near this bad of a start in either of his 2 seasons. Additionally, I can't think of a single all-time great that's had a significant drop off of their stats in 2 consecutive years after their rookie season. Sophomore slump, sure, but pretty much any all-time great hitter in history has mashed in their 3rd season.
At this point I'm wondering if Julio simply doesn't have the 6th tool - his mind.
@@Kaliphate name 1 all-time great who's had this bad of a 3rd season. guarantee you can't
So I have been on the anti-Julio wagon. I wish him the best but watching him bat is painful. I don't have to collect data but I noticed how bad he chases on balls outside of the zone. Keep in mind last year he was anti-clutch throughout all of the season. He was incredible against bad teams last year IE all of August. He needs to change his plate approach completely. I notice that they throw the sweeper outside and off the plate and it ends in a swing and a miss. THis team has been painful to watch offensively and JUlio is leading the way with the most strikeouts of as of today.
As a guy that has only watched about 40% of the ms games so far this season. Julio is so excited to get up to bat and swing at everything that it’s even more upsetting knowing if he’d play a little smarter he’d be so good. It sure doesn’t help that servais wants to work on strikeouts so there has been a lot of situations with the mariners where they watch a hung breaking ball right down the middle and don’t swing or on strike three instead of fighting on stuff that’s close they just let it go. If it wasn’t for the pitching so far this year we would have like 5 wins maybe. 😢
One of my favorite baseball UA-camrs to tune into! Fantastic commentary mixed with a healthy dose of comedy. Really hoping Julio can make the adjustments the first year I got back into baseball was his rookie year and he immediately became one of my favorite players and the mariners one of my favorite teams. Dude was electric I hope he gets back to it
That's awesome to hear he got you back into baseball! He can do some remarkable things, I hope he makes the adjustments to keep improving
Incredible breakdown! Just subbed. Would love to see a breakdown like this about Corbin Carroll. PLEASE! haha
I'm working on something now but I could take a look if he's still struggling, I thought I heard he hurt his shoulder on a swing end of last year (?) and hasn't looked great since then. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
"This wouldn't be a baseball video if I didn't throw in Shohei Ohtani's name in for no reason." That was really funny, had me laughing out loud. Great channel.
Julio hopefully gets better and makes the adjustments. Maybe somehow someone can show him this video. It might help him. I'm not a Mariners' fan, but I do like a good underdog story. I hope they make the playoffs again real soon. Red Sox too, my team.
great vid!
Julio Rodriguez should really watch this video and adjust his swings
Bro it’s April give him time(and that’s coming from an Astros fan)
Oh I know it's still very early, but this isn't just about this year. This is about a problem he's had for going on three years now, and the start of this year (and his slumps last year) show why this is a problem he needs to address. I hope he does and think he can, we'll see whether Julio changes his mindset in the box
Do April games not count? This is the worst argument. He’s supposed to be a top superstar, he’s not been playing close to that level. Players can play well in April.
@ignite_sports48 First year was his first taste of big league pitching, and I'd argue he's been worse this year then last.
2023 Mar/Apr: 27 G, 5 HR, .239/.301/.442/.743, 6.5 BB%, 27.6 K%, 107 wRC+
2024 Mar/Apr: 27 G, 1 HR, .276/.321/.333/.655, 5.4 BB%, 32.1 K%, 97 wRC+
33 games into the season with just 1 HR. This is so unexpected.
Have had these concers since last season. Want to believe that he will sort it out. My biggest concern is comes after realizing the mariners have almost zero chance of signing Kirby, he going home to NY as soon as he is FA imo.
What scares me as a mariners fan is it seems he iseither unwilling to make adjustments or he would have made some progress by now or even scarier to me is we dont have the personell coacing wise that is even able to help him and they are encouragong him to just go up there and swing out of his shoes every pitch
@@bugbean6185by the numbers he has been great but dont act like he hasnt looked terrible in most of his at bats, so off balance, chasing alot still, cant hit an up and in pitch to save his life now for some reason, looks like hitting it is foreign to him. all his hits recently are ground balls finding holes or bloop hits, nothing in the air with any exit velo behind it besides that 1 HR. hes putting up slugging numbers youd expect to see from brett phillips, its getting pretty bad at this point in the season.
He's dumb. That's the problem. Look at his baserunning mistakes. Unfortunately you can't fix that
as a mariner fan you should remember this is how julio works. slow starts. it just takes him a while to get it going. he will be fine
he has never started this slow though his average might be .260 but he's only hit 1 home run and his ops is .627
@@jarrettchristensen_music He has a career OPS in March/April of .642, he's been a slow starter every season of his career

@@TheConnorJoeTradedid you even bother fact checking yourself? Go look at his April 2022 stats
as the resident Phillies fan, we call this chasing sliders "Nick Castellanos syndrome"
A lot of great players were slow starters in April. We used to see that regularly here in Detroit when Miguel Cabrera was in his prime. As soon as the weather heated up so did Miggy. If however he had a decent April you knew he was headed for a special season, a la 2012 and 2013.
Which April was his worst though?
He's very easy to pitch to right now, that won't change until he's able to make an adjustment, which I know he will.
Move hem from # 2 it's to much pressure there n cost to manny games loosing .
Hope for the best in JULIO
Watching this video a month later and he's only gotten worse. At what point is something done about this by the team? It's getting ridiculous.
He is PAINFUL to watch. He's only getting worse too. He is stumbling and falling all over himself. Compare that to his rookie form where he is calm and composed but with a violent swing. What happened to that guy and mechanics?
ua-cam.com/video/u1hGYrbQvyw/v-deo.htmlsi=m3MWSaGWaAXb2scR
Every swing of his is like a 500 ft home run swing. He needs to find a way to just make contact and get on base. At least until he gets out of this slump. Luckily, he's still VERY young and can easily get out of this.
He is pushing to bat to the ball instead of dropping bat head rearwards and getting through the zone. He always starts slow but he has to get it going
They were writing him off at the all star break last season, remember that? then he went on a f--- heater and got his season numbers up to speed in the span of like 2 months, ya he’s gotta make adjustments, but I think he can and will because he has before
Some Dominican hitters have been known for their free swinging or some call them bad ball hitters. Roberto Clemente was a great hitter but he did chase bad balls . Some he hit out of the park or for triples and others he struck out on. Julio reminds me of Roberto a lot but Julio is I think still immature and does not have a plan when comes up to hit, all great hitters go thru this, adjustments have to be made and that is what separates them from being a bust. One other observation is that Julio hasn't hit as well since his all star homerun contest where he put on a great performance . But that event has caused many slumps even Ken Griffey Jr. admitted that it hurt him for a period time something gets out of whack with the swing. I think if Julio could go back and watch video of his hitting before the all star homerun derby he might find something there , but he will still need to figure out what they are doing to him now as compared to before. Some of those chases were not strikes and it's obvious when pitcher successfully sets a hitter up especially now as as hitter will only get one good pitch to hit per at bat and when your struggling that's very hard to overcome.
I think he's got a big flaw/hole in his swing. If you watch, he dives with his upper body and gets out front with upper body instead of staying back. He's a great talent but he was hyped pretty quick and without necessary performance
Great job! If you're not already a professional baseball analyst, you should be.
So Julio beat the all time Home Run Derby last year so, we know he can hit. But other Mariners are showing him up lately. Time for him to kick it into gear. It’s time!
Julio Rodriguez without the home run derby hype, he's Swanson minus the defense
Multiple Mariners are struggling with the breaking stuff, right now they are in first so not a huge red flag as of now. But the numbers do not lie.
He needs to go back to basics….get single base hits….whatever extra bases he can get from them. He has been swinging for exit velocity which is affecting his rhythm. I’ve always said he dips into hitting zone…I think he should open his stance ( he looks to be slightly closed)
Naw I agree. Been concerning all season. I keep thinking he’s gonna turn into that guy and he just isn’t. He can’t stop chasing sliders and all his hits have been lucky bloops or ground balls. He’s honestly been awful. Constantly getting into 0-2 counts. He’s looked borderline awful. I’m concerned
I love that stray to Arte
Yep, this has been going on for years now, YEARS the entire lineup hitting is a real problem and why has it not been fixed? There not going anywhere until its fixed.
Thank god you pointed it out, I always seen him as a Baez archetype
@@madxD144 he’s batting 270 right now and he’s a it behind on his HR hitting but cmon man…Baez? Gtfo. Julio slumped a bit but he’s an all around player. He’s still super young so yeah put the crack pipe down when you’re calling him Baez
@MarineLayerPod
This is my best friend’s channel.
I honesty think yall would find this video interesting.
-brought to you by the guy with the Connor Joe trade.
I’ve learned my lesson with this dude. He’s too much peaks and valleys. Him, Seager and Riley have caused my team to flop this last 3 weeks.
Bats are coming around a little but the pitching is carrying them w/ timely hitting.
I mean the team is first in the division with Julio being a “shell” of himself. I guess we’ll be top 5 in the league when he figures it out like he usually does.
I hope somehow he can find this video and watch it
I've never understood why his Rookie of the Year counterpart in the NL Michael Harris didn't then or since get near as much publicity and attention. Julio has been routinely (albeit incorrectly) put in the top 10 players in baseball. I didn't understand it then and it would be even more ridiculous now to not have Harris above him. He may not have hit quite as many homeruns but averaging 20 homers and hitting .300? That plays anywhere. Not to mention he is a much better defender in centerfield. Yes Harris is overshadowed by the stacked lineup of superstars around him but it's time he starts getting the nod over Julio as the best young Centerfielder in baseball.
Today. Balls out of the strike zone 3-2 count with bases loaded. He swung at a fastball that was in the inside batters box. Never again will I pick this guy.
Julio will be fine I think, I hope you talk about Corbin Carroll though
No one knows for sure what goes on behind the scenes but I have a very strong suspicion that the coaches mostly just act like cheerleaders, where everything out of their mouths is just encouragement rather than working with the hitters to fix problems in their approach or their swing. I think Servais has done well for the most part but he strikes me as somebody who insists upon radical positivity 100% of the time and thinks if anyone is ever held to account for their repeated stupid mistakes, it's going to ruin the chemistry in the clubhouse.
You do a good job in the video of pointing out the specific ways that teams are exploiting Julio's weaknesses, but it's not just him. Almost every Mariner hitter takes the same dumbass uber-aggressive approach and they all turn in terrible AB after terrible AB. Julio is just the most noticeable one because he's the *most* aggressive and because we expect such better results from him.
DiPoto needs to sit Servais down and tell him to stop treating these guys like fragile little children and give them some tough love when necessary. You can still have a very positive atmosphere and pepper in some constructive criticism when it's warranted. The best possible vibes would be if they'd stop losing easily winnable games due to trying to hit 600-foot home runs with the bases loaded and no outs in the 8th inning when trailing by one run. That was the main reason they missed the playoffs last year and they're doing the same thing so far this year in those situations.
The strikeouts are very concerning…Elly De La Cruz seems to gotten better with them, so maybe Julio will, too.
As a Tigers fan I’m so sorry if Julio turns in to Javy. Dude is looked at like he’s the devil here
His numbers with bases loaded kills me bro, I rather have seby up with bases loaded 😭
Down and away then inside. He will strike out or ground out everytime
Hes been a slow starter. Seems like hes heating up sooner than he had in the previous 2 seasons. We seen what he could do in one month last year. Once he starts hitting it out he'll go on a run.
Two months later and Julio is still pathetic at the plate, I don't know what the hell is going on, and obviously, neither do the M's or Julio.
I think this will be a problem for him going forward and the mariners are locked into him for too much money and a decade
You’re correct about the hole in his game, but he was batting .100 ish two weeks ago and is up to .276
Like this isn’t the end of the world and he’s on a bad team with zero lineup protection and an incredibly sus coaching staff
This is a solid team.
Hard to argue about the protection.
I am suspect of the coaching staff as well.
Seems as if the pitchers found a weakness in Julio’s bat. Throw all over the place.
The problem with Julio is Julio and the hype right now. He is too aggressive at the plate and is trying too hard right now. He hasn't seen a pitch that he thinks he can't hit.
vlad is broken
If Julio become Javy Baez I will actually kms
He will heat back up. It happens to all of us. Quit hating. Every major leaguer has had slumps and lows. Not one has not had slump before. Dont quit on julio man!
It’s called being young. He’s still 2-3 years away from what many describe as the beginning of his prime. This is still the player that was breaking records for over a month stretch last year. He’s just a victim of being young and learning how to put those stretches together more consistently. That simple
I hope you are right…
What about the other young hitters that manage to put it together before they are 26?
Are they just at another level?
@@TheConnorJoeTrade it’s not a perfect science. Theres too many variables that play a factor in determining when a young stud will “figure it out”. They don’t call it the game of failure for nothing. The majority of superstars don’t become superstars until year 3 or 4. Trout wasn’t anything special his first couple of full seasons either. But he showed glimpses of what he could be, then eventually it clicked. Not saying Julio will be regarded as the best player on earth for several years (not saying he couldn’t either), but like Julio, the season is still very young.
@@TheConnorJoeTrade the exact same as it was before. did I not say he’s still 2-3 years from even beginning his prime years? Why would my thoughts change? I will add this though…he could really use somebody else in the shitty lineup who can hit the ball somewhat consistently. He’s expected to essentially be our savior. That’s a lot of pressure for a 23 year old. This game has enough mental difficulties as it is.
How are you able to make this analysis but the Mariners hitting coaches can't? Sheeeesh.
Feels like I'm watching the same decline i witnessed Lindor endure.
Julio please go back to the stance u had in the Olympics and in the minors where u held your hands high behind your head with the bat-head parallel to the ground!! Watch video of Julio's swing with his old stance before he moved his hands down; it was a lot more "handsy" which allowed him to better adapt to location - he had no trouble with the ball inside which is a big hole in a swing now that he's got the longer low-hands swing: ua-cam.com/video/_e--9LTrTAE/v-deo.htmlsi=TwQuCZk0FosrK5Ku

😂😂😂😂😂 the guy who made this video obviously doesn’t know Julio as a player. Saying things like he needs to be going up with a plan says you don’t know his game. Julio has always been aggressive it’s what makes him who he is. It’s barely April and this is baseball he’ll eventually go on an absolute tear for a few months and end up with solid numbers at the end of the year. Julio will eventually adjust.
He will make the adjustments tho. He has every year so far. This is nothing new for him

It's early, he's young, yeah...but he absolutely does not take good approaches. Even if you're slumping I expect a "super star" to go up there and put up a major league at bat.
