Beautiful reading. The emotion you gave Greta at the end was especially moving. You did not muff a single word and found meaning in every sentence. Thank you Elizabeth!🥇

This is the highest level of fiction.
Joyce reached for something of value and got the golden apple.

Is there a way to make requests for books? I really need to read The Commitments by Roddy Doyle but it has been a hard read and I learn better from hearing. Thanks!

Seeing Joyce was never really alive, I'm not surprised he wrote about what he knew...the dead.

Not my cup of tea. I have read other critically acclaimed writers & found a title or 2 from each that I could sincerely enjoy. Im disappointed in myself, but just cannot find the groove with James Joyce.

Drinking Carlsberg and listening to this audio. Is Joyce the most boring writer ever. . . Probably!

  • @zthetha

While it is laudable that people volunteer to read books for those who are either too lazy to read them themselves or visually impaired, the art or craft of reading aloud is only really successful when done by an actor.
Simply rattling off the text like an indifferent schoolboy anxious to get through it quickly is not good enough. It is a long time since I read this and hardly recognise it from this performance. Perhaps Irish prose is best read by an Irish man - Joyce was the perfect choice for reading Joyce.

I don't care about the professionalism of the reading, but the quality of the narrator's voice is everything. About half the Librivox narrators sound great (sound pleasing, soothing, etc.), and the other half are absolutely terrible. There doesn't seem to be anything in between.

    • @annac9534

For some people, narrators with strong Irish accents can make it difficult to listen for nuance within the text. Some listeners need these audio recordings for literary analysis papers where they need to pin point quotes, themes, and literary elements to apply to their work. Deciphering devices through a heavy accent is more work than some are willing to go through. Here, we can listen with a little more ease to dig deeper.

This comes a bit late, I know, but she read lots of other books:
      librivox.org/reader/1259?primary_key=1259
(go for the ones labeled "solo")
