    I’m exploring buying a6700 w that lens and I want to tell you this was the most helpful (authentic) video I found as a buyer to know what that lens would feel like using. Thanks for keeping it real otherwise YT is full of BS blabber of so called reviewers who’re revising stuff without even holding on in hand

    I bought this lens for travel and use it on my a5100. It's smaller and more lightweight than the 18-105 and has more reach. Great lens for sporting events too.

    Great video, Jay! hanks for that. Would you prefer these lens over the 18-105 f4? They are at the same price range and I'm really torn between those two. I do make videos and all but the sharpness in this review made me wonder if this is the superior glass after all.

    Thanks for the Video!!! The jello distortion is happening because Sony 18-135mm OSS lens is more suitable to shoot photos, not videos without a stabilizer, I found out about that while filtering the video lens list on Sony website, and the Sony 18-135mm OSS was removed form the lens list when I checked "video"

    Great video. I also use the 18-135 on my a 6300 for vlogging. It is a bit tight but I love the range it gives me. Also I think it is one of the best travel lens I have owned!

    When shooting video the background seems to be warping? Would you recommend this lens for video or just photography?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

      It's definitely better for photography than video if you are walking and talking to the camera hand held like I was. However, If you are using a stabilization gimbal, it would be much better than what you saw here with the wobble and all.

    Great Video Jay, I really trust your opinion. A quick question . . . . How would you compare this with the Sony or Tamron 18-200 3.5-6.3 which have been around for a few years? Those lenses are just a little bigger and heavier but more focal range. Do you think that this 18-135 lens has better optics being a "newer" lens design?

    • @ArteUltra1195
      @ArteUltra1195 5 років тому

      Terry Cole the sony and tamron superzooms are horrible optically, the sony 18-135 is so much better

    Is the background always the most blurred at 135m when I take pictures or can I also set it to be the most blurred at like 50mm or 100mm for example? I am new at this

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  24 дні тому

      Depth of field or background blur is a factor of focal length, distance to the subject, and distance to the background, plus the max aperture of the lens. So yes 135mm at the closest focus distance will yield you the most blurry background in most cases, but 18mm at the minimum focus distance, and faster aperture with a really far background will also yield you a lot of blur... I would try it on a static subject what I just described and you will see what I mean depending on how close you are, how far the background is, and what zoom you are at. I would leave the aperture at the lowest number for every zoom point when doing this test also...

    I've currently got the Sony 16-70 and am not overly impressed with the images it produces on my A6400. I also have to Sigma 30mm 1.4 and am getting the Sigma 16mm 1.4. Do you think I should swap the 16-70 for the 18-135? I have heard the raw images need correction in Lightroom due to heavy vignette (even complete black corners) and barrel distortion, does the lightroom lens correction do a decent job?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому

      I prefer the image quality on the E 16-70mm over this lens for sure, but the range this lens offers is way better on the telephoto end. Raw quality this lens not near as good as the E 16-70mm f/4 Zeiss. It can be mostly fixed in Lightroom, but you don't get something for nothing.

    • @portreathbeach
      @portreathbeach 5 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. Some people say they find the quality better on the 18-135, I suppose it depends on the copy you get. As I have Sigma primes, I may sell the 16-70 for the 18-135 for the extra reach. As I edit all my photos in Lightroom, the vignetting and distortion isn’t really an issue, the sharpness of the image in the Raw file is most important.

    heres a question, lately ive been filming my own videos. im using a sony a6400 with a 18-135mm. what am i doing wrong here, i want to put an object close to my lens and focus on it and have the background blurred out. but wheverever i do this, the object in my hand gets blurred and everything behind it remains in focus. what do i need to make this work or what should i be doing to get this effect? thanks in advanced. side note: literally anything i put in front of me wont focus, it just keeps me focused. im pretty new to this

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому +1

      HEllo, You need to make sure the object you are trying to focus on is far enough away from the lens so it can actually focus on it. The lens has a minimum focus distance, and you are probably under that threshold if I had to guess. As far as the camera focusing on your face, that is normal because the camera priorities faces over objects by default. You will need to turn off the facial recognition option and then the camera will not prioritize your face over an object that is closer to the camera. Let me know how you make out!

      It's wide enough as you can see when I'm in front of the camera, but not really wide enough for some people. It really depends on your needs and how close you be from the camera. I'm 6'1" and have average length arms I would say.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Kaushal, honestly the a6000 is better in lower light do to the much larger sensor, but with the slow 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 odd lens it almost works out to be the same giw low light. Instead of getting another camera, I would consider getting a faster lens for the a6000. The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 or 30mm f/1.4 would be my recommendations... My review of those lenses is here: ua-cam.com/video/SWPO6Qy7ltw/v-deo.html

      Thanks for the quick reply my friend. You made my day.
      I have the Sigma 56 f1.4 and the Sigma 16 f1.4. The older Sigma 30 f2.8 too
      However, I was looking for a walk around lens with good AF tracking which can nail pics of toddlers playing around. I have a 16 month old. 😃
      Indoor quick shooting is also important for me. Usually under less than ideal but not extreme low light.
      Appreciate your take on this. I have the 30 f1.4 struggling with AF. 16mm f1.4 is working very well but too bulky to take to parks and the usual rough and tumble.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

      I hear ya and that is a tough call if you already have the Sigma lenses. Have you consider the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Lens or 28-75mm f/2.8 lens? They are full frame coverage, so a little heavier than ideal, but much faster than the 18-135mm lens. Also, the 18-135mm does not have the fastest AF motor for capturing kids at play. Don't get me wrong, it will work, but there are better options.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

    Jay. I'm former a professional newspaper photog now retired and wanting to move to a6500. Been beating myself up over which lens to purchase for this camera.. enticed by the 17 - 135 zoom but worried about picture quality particularly shooting raw at 18 mm.. vignetting appears to be awful. Don't have lightroom but using photoshop 6 .. can i adequately correct for this in photoshop.. other option is the sony zeiss 16 - 70 f4.. thoughts ?? I'm primarily a street shooter but the extra range on the 17 -135 would be great for travel...

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 років тому +1

      Hi Wayne, YEs the raw quality at 18mm is horrible if you don't apply the lens correction in Lightroom. See here: photos.app.goo.gl/2y2h98UcSDgUjNf97 And here is the corrected raw file for comparison: photos.app.goo.gl/btmiYyHjrs5erGcm6 FUll Gallery of sample Photos is here: photos.app.goo.gl/8cWAbqgrxtTxoV2F8
      I would totally go for the Zeiss 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens (bhpho.to/2wmwxJz) if I had the choice and wanted the best quality compact zoom lens possible. Also, the 16mm on the wide end is noticeable wider compared to 18mm. It's only 2mm, but it makes more of a difference than you might think. In addition, clear image zoom works so well, you can get some extra reach when needed using that feature in jpeg mode...
      I hope that helps Wayne,
      Jay

      Thank you very much! I was not planning on comparing it to the 18-105mm G lens, but that is a very good idea ;) I like the extended range and significantly lighter weight/ smaller form factor this lens offers, but I also like the buttery smooth powerzoom the 18-105mm lens offers for video, and constant f/4 aperture. Overall image quality is very similar between the two lenses I would say...

      @chryseass.5143 6 років тому +1

      Re: the IQ between the two - that's what I have heard that the new lens isn't compelling enough to 'upgrade'. I think that the fact that Sony is shipping the 18-135 as a new kit lens choice is significant.
      If I had received that with my a6000/6500, I probably would not have looked at the 18-105. I am one of the few who actually like the power zoom and miss having it on the new Tamron 28-75 ( using that lens on the a7iii) I find that using Clear Image Zoom on the a6500 gave me plenty of reach beyond the 105 and would be even better at 135 focal length ! Have fun with all your new gear!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 років тому

      Yeah, I can't see upgrading to it if you already have the 18-105mm G Lens, unless that extra reach and lower weight is highly desired.

      Thanks Jay, for that confirmation. I have never found it a burden to go out and shoot with 18-105 f.4. I also found that Clear Image Zoom came in clutch on occasion. I do have the 70-200 f.4 - now that I find is a lens I tend to leave at home because of its weight/size. I recently bought the ThinkTank Turnstyle 10 ltr. sling ( instead of the Peak Design 5ltr.sling) to carry it about . Unfortunately, I haven't had much chance to try that combo as I then broke both my ankles at the end of August ( don't ask!). Slowly recovering and hope to resume photographing soon instead of buying new camera and lenses, ha,ha . My convalescence has been expensive!

      Hi Anthony, I would say the 18-105mm has better contrast and color, but the sharpness is about the same on both lenses. Anthony, in that case I would say get the 18-105mm because you said 40% video. The 105mm is significantly better for video over the 18-135mm. It has the power zoom feature, the zoom is all self contained so the lens does not change size, and the aperture is not variable as you zoom like the 18-135mm.

    • @mirrekku
      @mirrekku 4 роки тому +3

      I don't have the a6400 yet, but like it depends on what you want to do, for video - 18-135, for portraits - sigma 16mm

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому +3

      Hi, well they are two drastically different lenses. You would really need to think about what you will be doing with the gear? The 18-135mm lens is an all in one solution that offers a huge focal range which can provide fairly wide angle shots which is great for landscapes and telephoto shots which is also great for landscapes and many other things. If you are not sure what you will be doing and just want to start taking photos and some video, then I would get the 18-135mm or the 16-50mm kit lens. Play around with those for a while and you will see what focal lengths you tend to use with the zoom. Once you find out the focal lengths you like, you can then go for a prime like the super fast Sigma 16mm f/1.4 or 30mm f/1.4 which I reviewed here: www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sigma-16mm-30mm-f-1-4-dc-dn-lens-reviews/ and Here: ua-cam.com/video/SWPO6Qy7ltw/v-deo.html

      maybe try selecting the focus area, or try setting the focus to centre, so anything in centre will be focus. While doing the manual focus, use the focus peaking to make sure the areas u want are indeed in focus.
      If its still doesn't come out right, maybe get it back for warranty or check.

    What do you say about this lens and 18-105mm?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

      I say both are very good for the money, but the 18-105mm has a bit better contrast, build quality, and of course offers the power zoom feature. In addition the 18-105mm is all internal zoom, so the lens does not change size when zooming and provides significantly better weather sealing. The 18-135mm is super sharp and grows in length as you zoom. So, the lens is small at 18mm, and longer at 135mm.

      All this images were shot in Raw quality, and a few of the photos were edited which it said next to the Exif data. The rest of the photos I did add a tone curve medium contrast in Lightroom, because they were fairly flat looking straight off the camera. This is normal for Raw photos and I should haven mentioned that in the video, sorry... Basically they look like what the jpegs would look like minus the sharpening and saturation being jacked up in camera...

    Question for all of lens nerds! I recently ordered a6400 with 18-135mm and I wonder if I did a mistake not taking the 18-105mm lens.
    I will shoot only in a studio, youtube videos, with a dark black background, with only one main source of a light and another as a lil effect, and on post I will try to darken all up. Filming will happen on a tripod, some sequences at 18mm, some others zoomed in, occasionally on a slider. No bokeh, no gimbals and only the center of the frame is important to me.
    Picking the 105mm was more expensive and honestly didn't see any enormous advantages regarding what I will create, with the exception of low light performance, which is my main concern, because I want also the sharpest footage I can get.
    Any thoughts? Did I make a mistake not spending more for the 105mm? I was going for the Sigma 16mm ofc, but I made up my mind considering the easier workflow of a zoom lens.
    A big thank you for investing a few seconds answering to me.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому +3

      You will be fine with the 18-135mm, don't worry ;) The only downside I can think of over the 18-105 f/4 for what you are doing would be the variable aperture. Meaning your exposure will vary if using manual mode when zooming, because the aperture changes. You can just set the ISO to Auto though and it will keep your exposure stable....

    18-135 is better at 18~50, but then the Sony E mount 18-105 is better from then on.
    If you do video - get the 18-105 as it is constant F4 aperture.
    * Compare them as stand alone 1 lens reviews don't tell the full story.
    Sony tried to copy the success of Fuji's XF 18-135 and when it first came out and their executive talk I thought it would surpass and outshine the older E 18-105 in all areas - but sadly for me in real life it didn't.
    Maybe we need Sony to do a version II of the 18-135 lens in the future to better match Fuji's capabilities.
    I personally still prefer the 18-105 for my uses, but each to their own as some may just need the lower 18mm photo end more than zoom and the 18-135 suits that.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comments! The 18-105mm f/4 G Lens has the G badge, so it really should be a little better optically. I notice the colors are a little more puchy on that lens and yes the constant f/4 and powerzoom make it significantly better for video use.

    • @dasaauto2024
      @dasaauto2024 6 років тому

      Aus1 Interesting to hear about the 50-105mm range comparison. It it partly because the Sony has ramped up past f/4 at that point?
      Btw, Sony is never going to do a version II of this lens. They have some downright embarrassing lenses for E-mount, like the 16mm f/2.8 and the 20mm f/2.8 that should either be discontinued or refreshed. If anything needs a refreshed v.2 it’s the Sony 16mm prime. But Sony doesn’t work like that. Their 50mm f/1.4 for A-mount, technically still being sold (an important focal length and aperture) is decades old. A lot of their A-mount glass has roots in the 90’s. Sony’s great with some things, but issuing a version 2 on lenses that desperately need it, is not one of them. The Zony FE 24-70mm f/4 is another candidate that really needs some attention. Too bad it won’t get any.
