Ok, what difference does it make? She's not white!? Ok, she's Lois Griffin colored from 3.era characters. Great, we got 1. Last time I checked, only Dehya 2 cat chick, got the same Lois Griffin color. So it's 2. That child from trailer 4 years ago surprisingly darkest of all the characters, but having it's own color. Ok 3. At the end of the day. Genshits lighting engine is garbage, so we don't know how white most of these characters actually are. To this day Kaeya and Xinyan are both THE darkest skin playable characters. So yeah, bar is at the rock bottom.

As latinamerican i dont feel pissed or something, in fact theres a lot of people here that is exactly the skin color that were showed in this teaser, also i talked with other friends that are latinamericans and they share the same thoughts, they even are proud that our culture is being represented. It’s a perspective formed from being a minority who has, either historically or recently, been under some forms of persecution SOLELY on the basis of their minority status.
While many probably can articulate it, in truth, no one who holds this view gives a rat’s ass about what non-Americans think about representation. That’s why you almost never hear anyone outside the states talk about it. It’s based more in American history than anything else.
You can't base an entire region of multiple countries with their respective ethnic groups with a skin color, since Latin America is incredibly diverse, and more tolerant than you americans can ever be. We have afrodescendants, mayans, nahuas, quechuas, mapuches, harnizos, castizos, mestizos, jews, gypsies, etc, but we are all brothers.

Also, doesn't make sense to do a "race representation" on Latin America, since it is more a cultural identity, and so far... Natlan has been pretty respectful within a fictional perspective. It is a nation inside a game after all, but you can see that Hoyo has been doing an investigation on Mexicas, Mayas and Inkas for inspiration.

You can tell these designs were meant to be for dark skin… i fear the higher ups wanted the designers to make sure they bleach the characters before shipping them out…. The light / white skin makes this batch of characters look so uncohesive which is a huge fumble for Hoyo IMO

People say that genshin is just a game and doesnt have to represent race, gender, sexuality, etc. i agree with this but i also think that if people enjoy games like genshin because they feel represented, then people who feel as if they are being underrepresented should also be able to complain abt the game.
Do i personally care? No, not rlly, but i cant deny that it’d be rlly awesome to see some more characters in natlan with darker skin. Remember, fontaine teaser showed around 8 characters and the cycle had over 18 so there are still alot of chances to see some awesome, dark skinned characters for natlan.

What they did to Iansan is wild lol, I can feel they don't want her but can't get rid of her because she was in the teyvat trailer, I think they actually were going to fill natlan with brown people at first and showed us Iansan and the children of murata but then they backtracked for some reason and now, everyone in natlan is suddenly pale and iansan is the only one (apart from ororun who seems to be kept mysterious for a purpose) to appear for 0.5 sec and not say anything
i find it hypocritical to ask for more representation while what you are asking for is to erase the past 500 years of south american history. over half of south americans are either of european decent or are mixed with europeans. as you can very clearly see, natlan isnt entirely based on the aztecs and there are modern inspirations such as the graffiti and the trumpets in the music. so there is a mixture of native and spanish culture. also calling people colonizers because of the color of their skin is outright racist.

What you have to say about what I said about the trumpets doesn't make sense. Because at first I say that they don't make sense if we're talking about pre-colonization. But then I realize later in the video that it makes sense if we are representing post colonization. The research I did stated that that line was inspired specifically by pre-colonization Latin America as well as Polynesia and West Africa. This is a reaction video sweetheart.
Natlan isnt only based on Latin America, and the problem is not white characters but ONLY white characters. Cmon now.

@Dorei02 not all the characters are based on Latin America in that video. Many have African or Native Hawaiian backgrounds. Natlan isn't solely based on Latin America. And we get that Latin America is very diverse, but 1 ashy character doesn't represent Latin America as a whole.

you say this, but they have two other games out that ppl actively play, that are relatively new. this *might* not hurt genshin, although I think it will drastically decrease the amount of money they COULD'VE made frfr, but this does not instill hope in *anyone* that's expecting major dark skin characters to be in hsr or zzz. it might be short term gains, even though I think having legit dark skin characters would've brought in more players and caused the existing ones to spend possibly for the first time, but it's going to hurt them long term b/c why should I spend on a company that doesn't acknowledge me.
and this is coming from someone who regularly gets the battlepass for hsr, as a day one hsr and zzz player, and about a year into genshin. I was looking forward to natlan when I heard that it was supposed to be a lot of dark skin characters, but this was a huge fumble. I came so close to uninstalling genshin, and I'm questioning whether I want to keep spending money in their games after this. I haven't even logged in to do dailies and stuff b/c seeing the game is annoying to me rn.
also, twitter and tiktok are not full of monolithic ppl groups. twitter in particular is full of ppl that would be happy they whitewashed this area tbh. they are social media platforms that have given ppl who are often ignored a chance to speak up and be heard, and lots of ppl absolutely feel annoyed about this outside of those platforms, just like ppl have been critical of representation in media long before widespread access to the internet was a thing.

i understand people want recognition for their skin tones but the way genshin represents cultures through awesome music, architecture and scenery i don’t think it’s necessary, you also have to understand that it is a CN company. the skin tones they have in game are the CN beauty standard. for a chinese game they are doing well for diversity.

??? Cultural representation INCLUDES the people. Majority of the people from the cultures Natlan is based off are brown and darkskin. It's racist and colorist to make them all white skinned for no reason. I feel like some people aren't getting the big picture. It's not just the fact that Natlan doesn't have that many brown skinned characters nor is it the fact that people with a lighter complexion can't exist in Latin America, Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East, etc. It's the fact that there are 5 regions (6 counting Natlan) in the game as it is, and in two of those regions alone, where we would expect to see a bit more diversity in skin color, Hoyo, a multibillion dollar company that aims to entice its players on a GLOBAL scale (forget the fact that they're a Chinese company, it's irrelevant when they advertise themselves as a company to provide an immersive experience to everyone around the world) can't even present us with a line of characters that have more melanated skin tones.
As of writing this, there are 84 characters in the roster. Cyno, Dehya, Candace, Kaeya, Sethos, and Xinyan are the only brown skinned characters in the game. Only 6 out of 84 playable characters are brown after 4 years. The ratio is literally 1/14. That's very damning.
And I see people in the comments arguing that there are people with lighter complexions in these regions too, which is fair, but there are also black and brown skinned people too. There are brown/black people in Asia, there are brown/black people in Europe, and yet, we don't see any of that reflected in this game. And in the regions (Sumeru & Natlan) where we would expect to see them the most, they aren't represented there either, and when they are, they're mostly NPCs. That's the glaring issue.

@@dumpaduh every character has almost the exact same skin tone, no matter which region they are from. Genshin has been consistent on keeping the same design look, and it’s worked. I don’t see Japanese people getting made because Inazuman characters don’t have epicanthal folds, same for Chinese people and Liyue. They’re happy because Genshin is a fun game that provided a region which represented their culture. Why can’t that be the same for everyone.

First of all there are characters in Netland there are based off of African culture. Do your research before you make a fuss. Second of all even for white people these characters are pale.
@@Hobikage_games Some. They are a Mix of Hawaii, African and Maori. Hoyo put a Bunch of Cultures into a Blender and created a Natlan Smoothie like Sumeru.

Uhh but it’s supposed to be about the indigenous people. Not what they are now. Colonization played a massive part in increasing the amount of whites in these areas. You’re point being is that they are now mostly white is kinda irrelevant here. Native Latin Americans, or Indigenous peoples of Latin America, generally have a range of skin tones, often described as brown or tan, rather than white. Their skin color can vary significantly depending on the specific group and region, but it is typically darker than that of Europeans. Factors like genetics, climate, and cultural practices have contributed to this diversity in skin tones among Indigenous populations. I’m not gonna go into detail because I don’t have to.

Okay, I agree with you that there should definetely have more characters with darker skin, those dark skins are pretty light, but as someone who lives in latin america, we are not all black or indians. We have a large diversification that Genshin is failing on showing, the same way it failed with Sumeru (that was supposed to represent Africa), I also wanted them to add more black characters (and not actually mess with their kit like they did with all the other black characters), but we also have our fair share of white, blonde people (me as well). I'm not defending Hoyo, just stating this due to what you said in minute 1:46, "she's still extremely light to be living in Latin America". I'm not trying to be rude or inconsiderate, as I do agree genshin should add more dark skinned characters, not tan or a light shade of brown.

They use real life culture from different countries into the game and use different skin colors on characters that fit into those regions. That's why the majority of characters from Liyue, mondstadt and Inazuma are lighter because those regions are inspired from China, Germany and Japan where the majority of the population in those countries are light skinned

What I'm hearing is that I don't understand what Latin America and South Africa have to do with the lack of representation for anything other than white people. This is not a new problem at all, especially considering that Sumeru is based on South Asia, which includes countries like India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The fact that Sumeru still has an overwhelming number of white characters is surprising. If the roles were reversed and only 6 out of 84 characters were white, the issue would be more apparent. No one is asking for all of Natlan to feature only dark-skinned Black people, but the lack of diversity is noticeable. The fact that after four years we have not seen a character darker than Xinyan is concerning.

Personally I LOVE the pyro archons look besides her skin color, obviously. I’ve seen people say her design is based on Māori bikers! Unfortunate they made her pale af. A lot of the casts outfits look great imo but they really whitewashed them, hoyo is such a joke. I hope something changes QUICK, but I’m not hopeful at all because I believe Sumeru got a lot of complaints as well and nothing was changed. Appreciate you for calling it out!

I would say it's more Australia than it is Africa or Saharan. I thought thought it was going to be volcanoes and very hot under the heat and the people will be more brown skin but they're not going in that direction. At least for now. Maybe later they'll release more areas. I thought the archon would also be brown skinned but this is a Chinese game and they have to make sales so it is what it is.
Yeah, It definitely feels more like Australia. I thought the area would literally be in war and conflict with dragons. Not like a tournament with Pokemon. They will probably will add people from Vanessa's clan later after the main Archon quest(I assume). Were getting toward the end of Genshin. It just feels like their dragging out the story. Not entirely, Sumeru was inspired of many different cultures from the Middle east, persian and from India so it did make sense that they were some light skinned characters and dark skinned one's from the desert region. But same can't be said for Natlan as the entire region is based in a warm and dry environment and based of west African, Aztec and latin American culture were the majority of people are tanned or dark skinned.

Are we surprised? Considering this game is from a Chinese company, they are not going to put out characters with predominantly darker skin tones. From some of my Chinese friends, I hear China can be very colorists, and at the end of the day -- hoyo wants to make money. I personally am disappointed bout the lack of melanin, especially if this is supposed to be based off the Aztecs.
They were inspired by the Aztecs, they are not based on them, Natlan's characters have small inspirations from different cultures around the world.

I’m so tired of people defending this. We need more representation of at LEAST tan skin. Many Latinos are claiming “many of us are light skinned” OKAY BUT most of our indigenous ancestors and indigenous tribes today are tan to dark skinned. The desire/need for representation is something that won’t occur if you’re the majority of a given population.
