  • TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, if you need to install a consumer unit more than 3 meters away from the DNO cut out fuse you must follow the correct regulations 📖 Jake and Tim are back to tell us exactly what these regulations are and what they mean.

Instead of the switch you show in the video....could I use a time delayed RCD or even a RCBO in its own enclosure as a switch as it also provides greater fault protection and faster disconnection speed of my longer tails?

There would be no reason why an RCD or RCBO could not be used for overload fault protection. If it was tails that were going to be used as opposed to SWA and they were going to be exposed, then there would be the need for mechanical protection that would come in the form of an RCD / RCBO 😄

The customer owns the meter tails from the meter to the consumer unit. The dno doesn't care what size they are, it could be a bit of string and they wouldn't want anything to do with it. The section from cut out to the meter is theirs, and they rarely upgrade that either. I've fitted ev chargers where there are 16mm tails in place, they've upgraded the fuse to 100a and left their 16mm in place.

My house is fed by overhead cables, one of which is at least 10 meters long as it goes to my neighbours house. They break their own rules. My meter tails are over 4 meters long and have been for over 20 years.
