Nice work. Interesting how very simple helmets were back then. As a life long NY Giants fan, I admit watching the AFL back then. The AFL seemed to have something the NFL teams didn't.....OFFENSE and high scoring games! I also find it interesting in viewing film of old NFL games from the 30's and 40's, teams seemed to wear the same color uniforms for each game. Pretty simple. As late at the 56 Giants/Bears Championship Game, there were no logos on the helmets. It wasn't until games were televised in the 1950's teams started wearing different color uniforms. Generally white on the road so folks could tell the difference between the teams when watching games on black and white tv's! TV changed everything.
@@dougandlina It probably wouldn't be an issue today since team colors are so drastically differnt now. They could get away with wearing dark jerseys in the same game.

That's right. Most teams over the last few years either celebrated their inception (50 years for many AFL teams) or longer for some other franchises. The Pat's didn't do it at all. I have a feeling Belichick nixed it.
Simpler time you only needed a millionaire and a few of his millionaire friends now you need bollionaires. I don't think the owners spent much on uniform design. Also you wouldn't see those face guards in 1960.
Fun Fact: Bud Adams always wanted to graze on the Oilers' practice field during the off season then use the restroom all over it to create fertilizer. Bum Phillips sometimes put a rope around Bud's neck to help him go all over the practice field. Rumor has it Dan Pastorini, Kenny "the snake" Stabler, and Elvin Bethea went there to watch this take place.
I don't think Harry Wismer directly sold the Titans to the Sonny Werblin group. The Titans owed lot of money and I believe went bankrupt. The Werblin group bought the NY franchise from the AFL and restarted it as a brand new team. They changed the name to help avoid being responsible for any Titan debt.
IMO😅, the Oilers had the best logo AND best-looking AFL uniforms until 1966 when they changed their helmet color from Columbia Blue to a silvery-light blue while also altering the uniform colors.🏈
It’s funny you mention that. My favorite Oiler uniform was the silver helmet with the blue and red derrick, Columbia blue jersey and silver pants. I’m from Houston and grew up an Oilers’ fan.
@@thomasdonlin5456 I find both patterns (there were some slight alterations) mentioned in the comment above, to he quite attractive. In fact, either of them would have been my choice over what the Oilers changed over to and essentially maintained from the 80's until the name was dropped when the stadium in Nashville was completed, resulting in the complete transition to the Titans.

In 1997 the Oilers moved to Tennessee. One year later they changed their name to the Titans. In 1971 the Boston Patriots got their first permanent venue in Foxboro, MA. Team ownership wanted to call them the Bay State Patriots being the Massachusetts state nickname. The NFL rejected the name but allowed New England Patriots which they have been called to date. They are still considered part of the Boston sports/broadcast market as Foxboro is 22 miles southwest of Boston. The current Cincinnati Bengal helmet was adopted in 1981. You're off by one year. Overall a good job here.

@@erikthorsen240 Weren't the original Bengal helmets supposed to be like the Browns because Paul Brown-who had started the Cleveland Browns-the Bengals first coach?
AFL tapped the black colleges for players now represented in the soutwest conference. The adoption of a wide open offense concept championed by sid gillman and al Davis ( at the citadel) was now matched with a high level of skilled players overlooked by NFL teams. Footballs filled the air, better TV than NFL 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
In 1960, in the AFL Boston, Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles had logos on helmets. In the NFL, only Baltimore, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and St. Louis had logos on helmets. Less than half of the teams in pro football had helmet logos. But by 1965, only the Browns were logo-less.
@@tygrkhat4087 Unless you want to say, about the Browns, that the color WAS the logo. Which wouldn't be unreasonable, since the team was named for the man.

The Vikings didn't defect. The Vikings were always NFL. The Vikings and Cowboys were put where they were by the NFL to try to break the AFL. Check out the series "Full Color Football."
@@jimbastian8062 I have checked out that wonderful series, "Full Color Football," and it's awesome, but yes, the Minnesota franchise did defect and went to the NFL when they were surreptitiously offered a place. Previously the AFL awarded a franchise to Minnesota businessmen Bill Boyer, H.P. Skoglund and Max Winter. My mistake was the team had not been named Vikings until 1960 after they left. But yes, there was a Minnesota franchise until they double-crossed the AFL. But as we all know, Lamar Hunt and the AFL got the last laugh when the Chiefs beat the Vikings.
@@dietpepsivanilla3095 I think it's been a curse on the Vikings that they lost four Super Bowls. Their 1975 loss to the Steelers wasn't as bad as the three AFL teams-Kansas City, Miami and Oakland in that order.
@@jimbastian8062 Winter and the rest of the original owners had agreement to join the AFL and when the NFL found out about this they told the Vikings if they didn't join the AFL in 1960 they would give them a NFL franchise to join the NFL in 1961 and that's when the owners of the Vikings backed out of the agreement they had with the AFL

the Oakland Raiders might not exist at all if the Minnesota Vikings had not jumped ship. the Raiders were a close to last minute replacement for the Vikings. also, the Oakland team was almost named the Senors. the Boston Patriots existed for the entirety of the AFL. they didnt change a "few years" later. they changed after they had merged into the NFL, the first merged season was 1970, the Pats became New England Patriots in 1971

The Broncos were a low budget team in 1960. Their first uniforms were bought off a defunct "Copper Bowl" which might explain the odd colors. They did indeed burn the uniforms in a ceremony before a preseason game a few years later.

This sucks. You forgot the Boston Patriots! White helmet with a blue tri-cornered hat. Brings me tears every time I see that very rare symbol. God, I loved that team as I do today.
The stripe on the 1962 Raiders helmets were closer to yellow than they were to gold. The New Orleans Saints helmets are gold and the Pittsburgh Steelers pants are yellow, the stripe on the '62 Raiders helmet was the same color as Pittsburgh's pants, not the same color as the Saints helmets. The Raiders did have gold jersey numbers in the early days and photographic evidence is mostly on trading cards, I have every Oakland Raiders football card from 1960-1981, every LA Raiders card from 1982-1994 and every card since they moved back to Oakland, 4 volumes total, Volume 1,1960-1970, Volume 2, 1971-1981, Volume 3, 1982-1994 and Volume 4, 1995-present.

The Raiders helmet did not have a stripe, and was plain black, and was so for their first three seasons, 1960, 61, and 62, no white stripe. They also played in San Francisco their first two seasons, at Kezar Stadium originally, then halfway through the 60 season, Candlestick Park, and there for their home games in 61. They had no place to play in the East Bay. They wore a uniform similar to the Chicago Bears at the time, but with black and gold colors where the navy blue and orange is on Chicago's. So, this guy is WRONG! Al Davis got rid of the gold. Ironically, the 49ers were wearing silver and light cardinal during that time, changing to gold for the 1964 season, after having worn gold only during 1947, 1957 and 1958 with their red color.

better than todays you think? Go Raiders? I like the Patriots helmets when Jim Plunket , Steve grogan , Darryl Stingley, Ray Hamilton, Stanley Morgan and Sam Cunningham played . not when Drew Bledsoe, and the 2000s team. I like the Cowboys of Harvey Martin, Ed Jones, Tony Dorsett , Roger Staubach Preston Pearson , Drew Pearson, Charlie Waters and Danny white played? Denver when Craig Morton played there, Rick Upchurch, Haven Moses, Rob Lytle , not when Manning not Broncos of today. I like the Jets helmets when they played at Shea Stadium Broadway Joe, Riggins, Boozer, Gaines , Caster . Do I have to explain my Oakland Raiders?
So you like the eras of "Pat Patriot", "America's Team", "Big Orange" and "Gotham Green". Good, but it's better to know that your allegiance is to the SILVER AND BLACK!

that wonderful beautiful AFL
The best
The helmets looked much better as time went on, good to see how they started.
I would like to see both teams wearing dark jerseys at games again.
@@dougandlina It probably wouldn't be an issue today since team colors are so drastically differnt now. They could get away with wearing dark jerseys in the same game.
The AFL San Francisco/Oakland Raiders originally had black and gold uniforms, I believe until 1963.

When Barron Hilton attended the USC football games the previous years as a football fan at the L.A.Coliseum he would hear the Tommy Walker Charge chant.
When Tommy Walker would run out to the football field to attempt the extra point kicks as the team kicker the USC team music band would play Tommy’s Charge chant he created as the team musician and the football fans that attended the games would yell out his Charge chant

“Da Dah Dah Da “Trojan Warriors Charge!

I wish the Patriots still had that great symbol. It is largely forgotten these days. It was not even presented during the Pats' 50th Anniversary year.
Loved those early Oiler unis!
Buffalo helmets were similar to those worn by the AAFC Bills of the 1940s.
The Los Angeles Chargers had a gold outline to their bolt and blue block numbers also with a gold border.

In 1997 the Oilers played their games in Memphis but only averaged 20000. They then moved to Vanderbilt until their stadium was finished in Nashville

@@erikthorsen240 Weren't the original Bengal helmets supposed to be like the Browns because Paul Brown-who had started the Cleveland Browns-the Bengals first coach?
AFL tapped the black colleges for players now represented in the soutwest conference. The adoption of a wide open offense concept championed by sid gillman and al Davis ( at the citadel) was now matched with a high level
of skilled players overlooked by NFL teams. Footballs filled the air, better TV than NFL 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
Few AFL Teams put their logos on their helmets. Sports merchandising was certainly an afterthought in those days.

The Vikings didn't defect. The Vikings were always NFL. The Vikings and Cowboys were put where they were by the NFL to try to break the AFL. Check out the series "Full Color Football."
@@jimbastian8062 I have checked out that wonderful series, "Full Color Football," and it's awesome, but yes, the Minnesota franchise did defect and went to the NFL when they were surreptitiously offered a place. the Oakland Raiders might not exist at all if the Minnesota Vikings had not jumped ship. the Raiders were a close to last minute replacement for the Vikings.
also, the Oakland team was almost named the Senors.
the Boston Patriots existed for the entirety of the AFL. they didnt change a "few years" later. they changed after they had merged into the NFL, the first merged season was 1970, the Pats became New England Patriots in 1971
The Chargers name and logo was created and originated in Los Angeles it’s a Horse charging into battle with a USC L.A.Memorial Coliseum historical connection and
Tommy Walker aka”Tommy Trojan”and then owner Barron Hilton.
The Chargers name originated from the USC football games and Tommy Walker aka (Tommy Trojan) famous historical Charge chant he created
“Da Dah Dah Da“ Charge!
“Da Dah Dah Da Trojans Warriors Charge!
Tommy Walker then musician /team kicker helped inspire then owner Barron Hilton “R.I.P.” to name the Chargers football team from the famous Charge chant he created as a USC musician band member /team kicker.
“Da Dah Dah Dah Da” Charge!
“Da Dah Dah Da “Trojan Warriors Charge!
to motivate him to score the extra point kicks.
So that’s where Barron Hilton got inspired and got the idea to name the Los Angeles Chargers football team.
The proof is in the Chargers 1960 original shield logo with the horse charging into battle.
The Charger is a horse charging into battle.
very similar to the USC Trojan Warrior with shield and sword and horse mascot charging on to the field to battle.
Hence the horse in the Chargers 1960 original shield logo.
The lightning bolt idea came from Barron Hilton liking the Air Force College football team lightning bolt logo as a College football fan.
Till this day that famous Charge chant is heard at the game’s and through out many other sporting game events.
The Los Angeles Chargers r the true original L.A. born team now back playing in the original birthplace and not too many team’s can claim that fact.
Rams were born in Cleveland 1936 and
Raiders were born in Oakland 1960
And that’s a fact these other teams can’t ever claim.
And also the Chargers r the true Southern California NFL team because they have never left Southern California unlike
the Cleveland/ST.Louis Rams and

Very well done sir 👏
If intrested, highly recommend the documentary "full color football" 7episode hr long each HBO sports series about the history of the AFL.
I have watched it, it was good!
The Broncos were a low budget team in 1960. Their first uniforms were bought off a defunct "Copper Bowl" which might explain the odd colors. They did indeed burn the uniforms in a ceremony before a preseason game a few years later.
I wish the jets were still called the Titans!
The Jets had a throwback game during which they wore Titans blue uniforms.
Fun video still in 2022

Nice. Thanks.
This sucks. You forgot the Boston Patriots! White helmet with a blue tri-cornered hat. Brings me tears every time I see that very rare symbol. God, I loved that team as I do today.
I featured the Boston Patriots hat helmet in the video, watch it again.
I feature the Patriots 1960 helmet at the 3 minute mark.
My apologies. Sorry. I love this video.
@@amypeterson4615 No problem, there is no way I could not feature the Patriots helmet, I miss the Pat the Patriot helmet, don't like the current one.
Wow. People had really small heads in those days.
the raiders had an all black helmet in 1960. no stripe until 1962. the stripe on their helmet was gold not white. good upload though
The stripe on the 1962 Raiders helmets were closer to yellow than they were to gold. The New
Orleans Saints helmets are gold and the Pittsburgh Steelers pants are yellow, the stripe on the '62 Raiders helmet was the same color as Pittsburgh's pants, not the same color as the Saints helmets.
@@davidcobb2693 hope that you have the inaugural Las Vegas cards with the state of Nevada logo donning the Raiders' uniforms.

😂 😂

Go Raiders? I like the Patriots helmets when Jim Plunket , Steve grogan , Darryl Stingley, Ray Hamilton, Stanley Morgan
and Sam Cunningham played . not when Drew Bledsoe, and the 2000s team.
I like the Cowboys of Harvey Martin, Ed Jones, Tony Dorsett , Roger Staubach
Preston Pearson , Drew Pearson, Charlie Waters and Danny white played?
Denver when Craig Morton played there, Rick Upchurch, Haven Moses, Rob Lytle , not when Manning not Broncos of today.
I like the Jets helmets when they played at Shea Stadium Broadway Joe, Riggins, Boozer, Gaines , Caster .
Do I have to explain my Oakland Raiders?
So you like the eras of "Pat Patriot", "America's Team", "Big Orange" and "Gotham Green". Good, but it's better to know that your allegiance is to the SILVER AND BLACK!
